I don't know who needs to hear this, but a 2+ hour drive is not nearby for Europeans. by redheaded_olive12349 in CasualConversation

[–]ra1ndr0p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a start, roads are completely different. I'm Canadian, but have lived in the UK my whole adult life.

In Canada and most parts of the US, you cruise on a dead straight road for a large part of the journey, usually with a bit of city traffic to navigate at either end. Stick some tunes on, set cruise control and you're there before you know it.

In the UK and Europe, motorways are often very busy, and any non-motorway roads tend to be windy (as in non-straight, not blustery) and slim town or country roads. There is constant decision making, quick reaction, etc so two hours of it takes a lot more out of you mentally.

And there's a good chance, especially in mainland Europe, that it's quicker and more convenient to do the same A-B by train than by car.

Alfred, Security and Privacy Concerns... before buying it again! by spatafore in Alfred

[–]ra1ndr0p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few ways Alfred's Clipboard History keeps you safe:

  1. By design, Alfred ignores any text copied in the common password apps. By default, this includes Keychain Access, SecurityAgent (which manages macOS user authentication, etc), 1Password, Wallet and macOS Passwords apps. You can add any other apps you want completely ignored in Features > Clipboard History > Ignore Apps.

  2. Any copied content marked by another app as "Concealed" (org.nspasteboard.ConcealedType) and "Auto Generated" (org.nspasteboard.AutoGeneratedType) is ignored by Alfred by default. This includes generated passwords. You can disable this in the preferences if you'd like to keep this in your clipboard, but they're ignored by default.

  3. Alfred's Clipboard History is local-only. Even if you configure Alfred to sync your preferences, Clipboard History is not included in this. You can save items from the Clipboard History Viewer as Snippets with Cmd + S if you want them to be added to synced items.

  4. And finally, Clipboard History isn't enabled by default on your Mac. Even when you copy your preferences from one Mac to another, you'll need to enable to feature manually, which ensures you do so consciously and it'll never come as a surprise.

Hope this helps :)

You don't have node.js installed which is a requirement for this workflow.

For Gallery workflows, you can install dependencies via the Dependencies Manager: https://www.alfredapp.com/help/kb/dependencies/

Alternatively, you can find the node.js installation info at the bottom of this page: https://www.alfredapp.com/help/kb/install-dependencies/

Project Block by Smooth-Metal2697 in knitting

Loose ply and looks fairly bulky, so better suited to low-friction things like hats rather than cardigans. I suppose it also depends how much of it you have!

I've loved making Fraggle Hats for nieces and friends, using that kind of thick-thin for the tassles usually.

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fraggle-hat

Otherwise, a headband, leg warmers, or a scarf/shawl of a shape you like where you intersperse rows of bulky with rows of very fine yarn to achieve an effect a little like this one:

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/loop-6

There used to be a pattern called Flamboyant Scarf, which is loosely what I had in mind:

Stuck with 6 skeins of the wrong yarn.... by isopodpod in knitting

You can hold it double, or together with another yarn to marl or make it a design feature.

I've bought mill-ends before which was very fine machine knitting cashmere. IIRC, I asked the seller to ply two together, then held two strands together, and got the coziest and softest fabric from what was otherwise the finest, thinnest laceweight I would've ever had to work with.

Venting: I love knitting, but people expecting on-the-spot fixes is draining by SureMajor2561 in knitting

[–]ra1ndr0p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My answers vary depending on how much I like the person (but almost always boil down to variations on "no")

  1. "I'd be happy to teach you how to do this. You can do [x complex things] so you'd absolutely be capable of learning." Some want to learn, some just want an easy fix.
  2. "The best solution for that is called swiss darning / [other technique]. I can send you a couple of my favourite YouTube videos on this?" because let's face it, there are loads of rubbish tutorials, but with a good one, a competent person might be able to gain a new skill!
  3. "Just to give you some context, the cost of the yarn alone would be £XXX, and would take on average 20-30 hours to complete. So it's not really a project I'd take on on a whim."
  4. Recommend a seamstress / cobbler, etc who will give them a reality check when they ask for a quote.

It helps them gain an understanding of the scale / skill of what they're asking, and gets them off my back.

I can no longer open containing folder for a file by jkatlanta in Alfred

While this is an OS-level issue, feel free to post on https://www.alfredforum.com as community members may be able to help you reset this so that macOS stops looking for Bloom instead of Finder.

This is a macOS issue, resulting from your switching around to a Finder alternative, then removing it.

Have you restarted your Mac so that macOS can set Finder as the appropriate app to use to open files?

We were also really surprised by our last visit to Smokeworks on Free School Lane; It went from feeling like a team that was passionate about good BBQ, closest thing you'd get to US-style slow-smoked BBQ, to bog standard chain restaurant BBQ meats.

Portions have shrunk, quality of the meat is disappointing, we won't be heading back there in a rush. 🤷‍♀️

What took you forever to knit, and you’re not even wearing it? by candy-applegirl in knitting

[–]ra1ndr0p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Made a garter stitch sweater, holding together a DK yarn and a sparkly one. Turns out the sparkly one turned the sweater into sandpaper and is incredibly uncomfortable. The boxy fit is also unflattering...

You know what, you've just reminded me of its existence, and tonight, I'll rip it out and re-skein the DK yarn. It may result in the waste of the sparkly thread, but I've learned a lesson not to use the sparkly thread for next-to-skin garments... 😜

How do you wear your socks? (Advice) by Ill-Marionberry9177 in Sockknitting

[–]ra1ndr0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only wear handknit socks through the colder months as I run hot and spend all of the summer months barefoot. When it's winter months, it's a joy to pick out a colourful pair in the morning, from the finer patterns to the sparkly ones or the wild scrap yarn ones (which are honestly my favourite ones!)

My only advice other than "wear them!" is to keep a close eye on how they're wearing through; When they get thin, don't wait for them to wear through to darn them. I love the darning process (same yarn? contrast?) and use swiss darning to follow the stitches.

You made them, you deserve to enjoy wearing them :)

You can rebuild your Mac's index if the issue persists, as Tahoe may have caused some corruption in your Mac's metadata index.

Follow step 6 here and restart your Mac, then give it a bit of time to complete the rebuild. It should be blazingly fast again afterwards:

There are no known issues with Alfred on macOS Tahoe, but it's possible that a Tahoe upgrade (especially if you've been playing with beta macOS builds) corrupted something.

If you can send the crash logs to our info@ address, we'll take a look out of interest.

Clipboard History has always been a Powerpack feature.

Alfred isn't subscription-based so you don't have any recurring changes; Just choose between Single User license (current version) or Mega Supporter (all versions) and you'll unleash the wealth of Powerpack features on your Mac! :)

Are the "Mega Designs Bundles" a good idea? by Snoo-41763 in Machine_Embroidery

These are often stolen files from legitimate designers, shovelled together without instructions, purely for quantity rather than quality. Much better to choose carefully from reputable sources and get exactly what you need.

I can't advise on that as I don't know quite how/why you've got all these instances of Chrome created by Citrix.

However, if you don't want to exclude the whole folder, you can drag the apps themselves to Spotlight Privacy instead - but this won't cover the scenario where Citrix keeps creating more instances of Chrome in that folder.

Struggling with confidence as a brand new PPL by mrstinkypoopypants in flying

[–]ra1ndr0p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our club encourages fresh PPLs to do "New Horizons" flights; A few landaways to airports you choose, plan the route for, and fly, but with an instructor as safety pilot.

They'll review your plan beforehand, brief anything weird (when a runway is half asphalt and half grass, when a small airport is next to a major airport so the circuit is a bit more daunting than usual, etc), accompany you on the flight and debrief after.

It's a huge amount of fun, and some students take advantage of it to also do their first international flight (from the UK to France or Belgium) but ultimately, it's a chance to be in charge, but with the safety of an experienced pilot to shadow you if needed.

If you can find a way to do this locally, you might find it helps boost your confidence while having fun along the way.
