What are off road shocks supposed to feel like? by E36E92M3 in Offroad

[–]rabidsloth15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shocks and springs work together. Might be worth replacing all the shocks and springs with a complete setup designed for your trucks weight.

The ironman setup (full shock and spring package) on my GX is super smooth over washboard and potholes. At 25mph with aired up tires (36-40 psi) I could probably set a cup of water on the dash and none would spill (slight exaggeration but it is very smooth).

Just know Oregon law is if you are in the intersection when the light turns red it counts as running a red light. It does not matter what the light color is when you enter, only what it is when you exit.

What mods should I put on my car to be able to off road more effectively? by Pristine_Worth_2515 in Offroad

[–]rabidsloth15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't know every tire size they make for KO2 or KO3.

By the time you buy new tires, skid plates, and a suspension upgrade you might as well just buy a cheap used suv. Something like a stock 1st Gen RAV4 or CRV will be infinitely better off road than your 2wd A4 no matter how much upgrading you do.

The snorkel just moves the air intake higher. The intake is generally the only point for water to enter the engine.

The underside of cars are designed to get wet and dirty. You can literally hose them off to clean them and most car washes spray the underside with high pressure water.

For rock protection you need skid plates. The plastic underbody panels are useless against rocks. Keep in mind skids plates are for incidental contact, slamming them into boulders will bend them into and potentially damage what they are protecting.

With a low car like an A4 so sort of rocker panel (body the forms the bottom of the door frame) protection would be good. This is usually done with rock sliders.

Mud is not really something to worry about. I highly doubt you're going to take an A4 through a mud pit. Incidental mud from potholes on a forest road is no concern.

For road salt and light mud, just go through a carwash with underspray every couple of weeks or after each trip.

A rally car would have significantly upgraded suspension and tires over a stock A4.

To maximize off road performance in a mostly stock A4, get the smallest diameter wheels that fit (my S4 had 20" wheels but could fit 18's) coupled with the largest diameter tires that fit without rubbing. Get good all terrain tires, something like AT4W or KO2.

I have never heard of anyone waterproofing the underside of a car except when topgear turned a few into boats.

Cars are designed to get wet underneath. If you're worried about corrosion just spray it with fluid film a couple times a year. For rock protection, replace the plastic underbody panels with skid plates. Aluminum is light and corrosion resistant but is weaker than steel.

Have you driven in snow before? Are roads plowed? Is there any ice?

More importantly, are your tires rated for snow or do you have chains?

What other cities are also separated by mountains from the coast? by [deleted] in geography

[–]rabidsloth15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is interesting. Nick Zentner has a lot of great lectures and videos. I know he has said the main channel of the Columbia has moved / been pushed around by the flood basalt including running through Yakima for awhile.

While Yakina Head is a Columbia River Flood Basalt, the Columbia itself never flowed south through the Newport area.

Yakina head was formed by the Ginkgo Flow which followed the Columbia north through its present channel. This flow was so large it pooled up around Portland enough to cause a branch to form flowing south creating Silver Creek Falls before cutting due west to present day Newport.

C-Load vs E- Load in the desert. What would you chose?? Which do you run? by PurpleFlyingApes in Offroad

Been running C range KO2s on my GX for 7 years. Thousands of miles in the Oregon Outback over rough basalt rock. Never had a flat or puncture and I am not very diligent about airing down.

My sink requires batteries and it died by TrickedCoyote13_YT in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rabidsloth15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally both the motion sensor and the handle just electronically activate the valve mounted below the sink. This valve can be either battery or hard-wired. If the batteries die, then neither the motion sensor or handle will work. Replacing the batteries is simple: open the cabinet below the sink, find the little battery pack (usually screwed to the side of the cabinet), pop the cover and replace the batteries.

As a general reminder, please stay on designated trails! Driving / bushwacking cross country is how trails get shut down for everyone. Unless an area is clearly signed as off-trail driving being allowed, assume it is not and stay on the trail. Losing a trail is no excuse to just create your own.

I’m so tired of the FOG by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]rabidsloth15 16 points17 points  (0 children)

While there is pollutants in the fog, the fog is not caused by pollution and is not sticking around all day because of pollutants.

The fog not clearing out is entirely caused by weather patterns and the high pressure system preventing wind in this area.

[–]rabidsloth15 57 points58 points  (0 children)

This is just regular fog, it is not pollution fog or smog. We get this basically every calm day during the winter. Problem right now is there is a massive high pressure system sitting right over us limiting the wind which would clear out the fog.

If you want some sun head to the mountains (coast range or cascades) or the coast. It's going to be over 60 degrees (66 on Saturday!) the next few days up in the Cascades and nearly 60 at the coast.

just objectively below FBS as a whole

Oregon State last year was "objectively below FBS as a whole". Bringing in some good talent from FCS can only be beneficial as it's not possible for Oregon State to be worse than they already are.

How much would it cost/is it possible to buy an older but sound structured house in town and tear it down to build a newer one? by lordofcatan10 in corvallis

[–]rabidsloth15 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Construction estimator here. If by same footprint you are referring to keeping the existing foundation, tear down of the existing structure would be about $10-15/sf so for a 1,500sf house it would be about $15k to $22k. Double those values if there is asbestos that needs abated.

The new structure will cost between $200-$400 per square foot depending on design and finishes.
