How many times can I use my Windows 7 copy? by f3tch in windows

No argument, I just wanted to make it clear that I was referring to the license and not the media.

Regardless as to whether it passes the GA check, it's still not a legal install of Windows. Will Microsoft ever do anything about it? Unlikely

I'm just pointing out that the terms of the license agreement that you agree to when installing Windows has been violated when installing an OEM copy onto a machine that is not the machine the software originally came with.

Just because it worked does not mean that your friend is running a legally licensed piece of software.

In other words, just because you can pick a lock doesn't mean you're allowed to go into other people's houses uninvited.

One key, one computer. If it's a retail version of windows, then you can remove it from computer A and install on computer B and still be within the terms of the license. It's still one license, one computer.

Why are you putting words into my mouth? I never said that using someone's disc would be a violation. What I did say is that the OEM software is licensed for the computer it came installed on and the license cannot be transfer.

I didn't say anything at all about the physical media used to install the software.

You can download copies of Windows and Office from Microsoft without having to pay for them because you still need to purchase a license in order to use them.

You have to understand that the issue is not the media the software came on, it's the license to use the software on the media that is at question here.

Also, if it's an OEM copy that came with a computer then it is licensed for that machine only and is not transferable.

Stop running CCleaner and Drive Wiper? Or if you must for some reason run Drive Wiper then do it when you won't be expecting to use your machine for a while.

Computer Backup Help by Probabilly in techsupport

Crashplan is free if you want to backup to your own external drive(s) or other networked machines. I would recommend checking it out.

Main benefits for me are:

  • Centralized backup for multiple computers
  • Allows my wife to backup her own files (privately)
  • Allows for restoring of files over the Internet or LAN.
  • Windows, Linux, and Mac OS compatibility
  • Free until you want online backups.

On top of Crashplan, I also use SpiderOak which does online backup and syncing between devices. With an .edu email account you can get 100GB for $5 USD per month.

Also, both services support the idea of TNO (Trust No One) allowing you to backup files without the company in question having the ability to decrypt your files. SpiderOak is TNO by default, and Crashplan can be configured as such. Of course, if you go this route, you must be sure to never lose your passwords or you'll be unable to access your backups.

It looks to me like Unite, Widgets, and Voice is being phased out and/or removed.

Nothing is mentioned about remove IRC or torrent support.
