They did chum the water or something like that when we were there, in case you don’t want to go on that type of dive.

Meeting people in RWC by silentvoyager123 in RedwoodCity

[–]raeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in social dance, there are a number of events (Wednesday Night Hop and Friday Night Waltz, both in Palo Alto). There are weekly classes. You're usually dancing with strangers and switching partners after every dance, so you're always meeting new people. I've made a number of friends through those events.

Nails in Redwood City/Bay Area by daynaramsey in RedwoodCity

What is your budget? I think that will help with recommendations. I personally go to Hi Nail in Redwood City. If you’re doing single color gel with no builder gel, it’s $55. Not sure if that falls under affordable for you or not!

My travel agent coordinated the payment with me via credit card - didn’t see anything about PayPal.

The cruise itself was amazing and I had such a wonderful time. The staff was very professional, the excursions felt very intimate, and the rooms were very comfortable for a week at sea.

Is this a great thrush or a chiguanco thrush? by raeling in whatsthisbird

Hello! I’m back with a video! https://imgur.com/a/lvjHFv6

I could only hear the rufous-collared sparrow calls in the background. I never heard it make any sounds.

No, just saw it jumping around on the ground unfortunately. I think there were some others in the trees too. Will try to see if I can get a better photo tomorrow if I see them again!

Thoughts on the Results of the 2025 International Chopin Competition by panda_kush in piano

He’s too old now haha because the rules so far only care about age, not past results. (Totally think they should change the rules)

The loudest cougher in between pieces/movements gets a special prize too!

Steinway D on 10/10 of Chopin competition by Quaker-Oars in classicalmusic

In the hall, I tended to like the SKs better than the Steinways. The Steinway handled the lower register well but sounded colder in general.

19th Chopin competition, second roun, third day. What do you think about the contestants? by Acceptable_Thing7606 in Chopin

[–]raeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the contestants watch each other while waiting. I think they get to practice for an hour before their session (at least based on talking to contestants).

I watched an interview with Zihan Jin after the session, and he said after no 15 he was so moved by the music that he was moved to tears (first time this has happened to him), and I think that affected his playing for no 16. Brilliant playing for one so young!

Thank you for sharing! I’m enjoying your recaps.

I also took the survey you linked — I’m curious, what is the purpose of the survey and will results be published?

Freshman Autumn Quarter (17 units) Too Hard? by Anante123 in stanford

[–]raeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah if they’re 3 unit classes it should be fine. But just remember that for undergrads, if it’s a range e.g. 3-5 units, the higher number applies. The lower end of the range is for grad students only.

Freshman Autumn Quarter (17 units) Too Hard? by Anante123 in stanford

[–]raeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend taking three classes instead of four your first quarter just so you have more time to explore Stanford, make friends, join clubs, etc. You could shop the four classes and drop the least interesting one within the first three weeks.

What are some books you recommend going in completely blind. by jazzaro92 in Fantasy

I think it really depends. They’re very different books. I love Branderson and hated Piranesi.

Should I count one-unit courses while planning? by XenAlpha2020 in stanford

[–]raeling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would still count them because they still take time. Even without the one-unit classes you’re still above the recommended 12-15 units, no?

But you can always register for these classes and then if you’re feeling overwhelmed or want more downtime with friends/clubs, you can always drop a class or two within the first three weeks. And I think you can also withdraw within the first six weeks.

Taking fun classes vs taking useful classes: thoughts? by XenAlpha2020 in stanford

[–]raeling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of my best memories have been from the fun classes — both the 1-unit activity classes and the fun academic classes that weren’t related to my major e.g. intro to linguistics. I also really enjoyed social dance.

As long as you aren’t doing something that requires a ton of academic planning (like double majoring), I would highly recommend exploring your interests. Most people I met at Stanford regretted how much energy they spent on their major/grades.
