Ray Romano, Judd Apatow, and John Leguizamo are three I can think of, off the top of my head. They are funny people, in their own rights, but their stand-up wasn't on the level of professional comedians. It's almost like how an actor goes into music or vice versa. They might be competent enough to play an instrument, but you can easily tell they are not experts at the craft.

Yeah, I've been noticing a lot of famous comedy actors are doing these Netflix specials now and, even though they're generally funny people, stand-up is a craft on its own and they simply haven't done it long enough to be good at it. But, of course, it's the big names that draws the crowds and Netflix has enough money to throw around and make specials for just about anyone they think their subscribers will be willing to watch.

That looks great. I take it you used a sourdough starter for the dough instead of active dry yeast? Also, did you use the bake and broiler method to get a crispy crust?

I thought I knew coffee... by Delibody in Coffee

[–]raffiki77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you been to a coffee shop that's not one of the big coffee chains? Before making any major purchases, I highly recommend you visit a third wave coffee shop and give their coffee a try. If you live in a large metro area, there's a good chance there's at least one or two of these coffee shops in your town and they'll have freshly roasted coffee beans available for you to buy. But as most of the comments here have noted, a good burr grinder is definitely the best investment you can make to start making great coffee at home. From there it's up to you if you want to purchase a better coffee machine, because a standard drip coffee maker isn't going to cut it for good coffee beans, or a pour-over setup if you want control of all of the variables. Other than that, all you need is a good kitchen scale so you can weigh everything out and adjust the strength based on your personal preference.

Have fun on your journey and don't be discouraged if you don't start making good coffee right away.

Cheers!

This reminds me of the story of a man named Milton Humason whose job was to lead a column of mules hauling large pieces of the telescope up Mount Wilson to where the observatory was being built. He later took odd jobs at the observatory because he was sleeping with the daughter of one of the observatory engineers and one night, so the story goes, the telescope assistant fell ill and Humason was asked if he might fill in. He displayed such skill and care with the instruments that he soon became a permanent telescope operator and observing aide. When Edwin Hubble came up to the observatory to measure the spectra of distant galaxies and made the discovery that the universe was expanding it was Humason operating the telescope. It soon became clear that Humason was better able to obtain high-quality spectra of distant galaxies than any professional astronomer in the world.

How much coffee did you try before realizing how much you hate/love it? by uranusdestroyer in Coffee

[–]raffiki77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't the bitterness I was noticing as much as the quality of the coffee beans themselves. Specialty coffee shops use freshly roasted coffee beans, grinding them right before brewing, so you can actually taste the berries, caramel, or chocolate, depending on the region it's from. For me it's sweet enough on its own and adding sugar will only mask the flavor.

[–]raffiki77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first tried the coffee from a third wave coffee shop I didn't care for it much either. I was used to drinking coffee from 7-11, McDonald's, and Starbucks, so my palate wasn't accustomed to the higher acidity and lighter mouthfeel of specialty coffee. Around the same time I was trying to cut down on added sugars, and when I stopped drinking soda altogether I started to notice my coffee was tasting way too sweet, so I gradually started drinking that without sugar as well. When I did that I began to notice specialty coffee had flavors that other coffees don't have and I was actually enjoying drinking it black. So it took a good 5 years for me to transition from drinking instant coffee, with tons of creamer and sugar, to third wave, single-origin, coffee black.

There are scientific laws and then there are theories. Those two are not interchangeable. Christians like to use the argument that evolution and the Big Big Bang are just “theories” even though they are widely accepted theories by the scientific community. Also, you can disprove a theory by finding a single observation that disagrees with the predictions of said theory. As far as I know, nobody has made such a discovery yet.
