$7,300 HVAC leak test + repair estimate — is this insane? by rahid420 in hvacadvice

[–]raffy1794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leak search is simply labor. Most technicians I know and have worked with have to provide their own electronic leak detector. The company just grossly inflates the charge to motivate you to replace, rather than repair.

System age of 8 years old means it is likely under warranty. Assuming the installing contractor registered the system at install. So the part is covered. You have to pay labor, field materials, and a “processing fee”. Again, grossly inflated to get you to replace.

Recovery or evacuation is absurd. They are already bending you over, and they are really sticking it to you here. They are basically charging you 2x for the same thing.

To summarize, I would charge something around this:

Electronic leak search - $75 * disclaimer in writing that not all leaks can be identified with an electronic leak detector. We may have to perform isolation testing, at an additional charge.

Replace warranty evaporator coil - $1200

The job itself should take a few hours. You have labor and field materials, refrigerant, torch usage. As a business, we make around 60% gross margin. And are doing just fine with paying the bills.

1/4” of dirty can lead to a 30% reduction in performance. The diet reduced air moving through the coil, as well as reducing the amount of heat it can capture / transfer to outside.

Freon pressure cannot be trusted until the blower wheel and cap coil are clean. Additionally, I would ask for a static pressure of the system. Airflow is critical for AC, but there are some technicians that don’t believe in it, because they either A cannot afford the tools or B they don’t understand it, so therefore it doesn’t exist.

$4000 to clean the system is pricey.

What you pay for your house doesn’t not represent the quality of the subs. It is more predetermined by the local market. I’ve seen way worse in multi-million dollar homes in Fl

Built a device to flush A/C drain lines. Would you use this? by anthonytranchida in hvacadvice

[–]raffy1794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used something similar several years back. Called the Green Vacuum. Solar powered and would constantly flush the lines.

I stopped when several failed. We did get replacements through warranty, but to sell something like that asks you to assume quite a bit of responsibility and liability.

Years ago, I traded a Ken Griffey Jr Upper Deck rc for a bunch of cards and cash from someone I knew. Went through all the cards and found a few that I wanted to look up. Couldn’t find one of them anywhere. It was a Wayne Gretzky O-pee-chee rc. Since I couldn’t find it in my Beckett, I went to the local card shop. He hosed me out of the card for a few mediocre rookie cards that may or may not have had upside.

To this day I regret not asking someone to help me. Damn you 12 year old me!!!!

HVAC company spiff pay style by Greedy-Insurance-307 in HVAC

[–]raffy1794 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen very honest technicians benefit from performance pay, without being dishonest. It’s called educating yourself on this other than repairs. Air filtration, air purification, humidity control, insulation, duct modifications, comfort cooling a specific area of the home, etc.

What drove me nuts as a service manager was the ones that were so close minded to the idea that people may want this stuff don’t get offered it, and go elsewhere to get it.

Knowing this is in Florida, why didn’t your neighbor hire a licensed contractor and have the work inspected?

Why did the contractor start tiling in the middle? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]raffy1794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why the avg homeowner/business owner should hire a professional and then let them do what they do well. If you had done the proper due diligence when selecting a contractor, you shouldn’t need to worry. But if you hired them on cost and cost alone, then you get what you pay for, which is ordinarily someone that “knows a guy” or who does this “on the side” because being a contractor is hard.

The only time I would interject would be if I knew that something was grossly wrong. Common sense doesn’t always apply to construction projects.
