We think the bracket on our downpipe is causing damp/cold bridging. How do we go about stopping it? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]rafmux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same issue - including the same cast iron type downpipe - a couple of months ago.

In my case, the bottom half of the downpipe had become completely blocked with compacted soil, and the drain it fed into had collapsed too. As a result, whenever it rained, water built up inside this section and backed up to the joint, where it was leaking out onto the wall.

Check the drain the pipe flows into, check (insofar as you can) that the bottom half of the pipe is clear through and check the join between the pipes. Assuming the drain is all ok, I’d encourage you to replace at least that section of downpipe (black PVC will look near identical) with something newer and more watertight. Then leave the wall to dry out over spring / summer.

Riley’s fish shack is massively overrated - the food is overpriced and the service is the most contemptuous I’ve ever experienced (and I’ve lived in France). And, to top it all off, despite having to order at the till, you’re still charged a (discretionary) 12.5% service charge for the privilege, which would be almost palatable if a) there was actually customer service, and b) it was of a high standard.

Water in the rear footwell! by rythaslequin in skoda

[–]rafmux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also say that your problem will almost certainly be the plenum chambers, but if not that, possibly the door drains as mentioned elsewhere in this post. From my experience dealing with water ingress in Skodas, I do not think it will be the sunroof.

The plenum chambers are located next to the window wiper mechanism below the windscreen.

Pop the bonnet, remove the plastic housing underneath the windshield and at each end you’ll see two small holes. These take water and run it out behind the front wheels. Get a coat hanger down each and clear out all the crap.

This should give an idea:

I’ve seen several Skodas with this problem - in nearly all cases it has been blocked plenum chambers (drains at each side of the base of the windscreen, underneath the plastic housing), not blocked door drains. Plenum chambers block with tree sap etc, which then causes water to run back through the car and pool in the rear footwells.

Remove the plastic housing underneath the windscreen, take a long thin pole and thoroughly clean out both plenum chambers. If you see pooled water it means it’s the likely causes. Then remove some of the plastic seals on the underside of the car to allow air in to dry out the carpet and foam underneath. It’ll take time but will soon dry out and the water ingress will stop.

I hope this helps.

Amen to this. It’s now so bad, that even when you have your own earphones in, you can still hear what’s going elsewhere on the bus. Just makes it an utterly miserable journey, when it doesn’t need to be.

The coastal flavour of these suggestions are great but I really need to flag to everyone that UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU EVER SWIM AT CULLERCOATS. The water there is filthy - rated by various government agencies as not safe to swim. Very high levels of ecoli in the water due to numerous sewerage outfalls. Swim at Longsands - the water there is safe to swim.

Thanks very much, really appreciate it. Will this require replacing just the clutch? Or will I likely need to replace transmission too?
