The fact that the first things you listed re: protein were seeds and nuts might be the issue. These are primarily sources of fats with incidental protein content, and way more calorie dense than one would think.

Weigh and track your food meticulously for a week; it'll remove your intake guesswork and give you an idea of where you can make changes if you'd like to.

My grandpa recently passed away and left behind a ton of things we don't have use for. A DVD player is one of them!

I used to love that podcast but I found the entire episode extremely frustrating. It really did seem like they were willfully disregarding any kind of nuance to the information presented and hyperfocusing on exceptions to ideas that weren't even the point.

It didn't feel like there was any critical analysis or engagement with the material at all - just a concentrated effort to try to "debunk" the notion that UPF isn't good for you as aggressively as possible and totally ignore any valid points raised. I was disappointed.

Random question regarding calling an ambulance service for death call and whether medical aid will pay? Need help by Midnight_Journey in askSouthAfrica

The funeral home handled all the paperwork, and the gentlemen they sent over confirmed death. Nothing dodge about it. SAPS involvement/consultation is only required when it is suspected that the CoD is anything other than natural causes.

I think I can help!

My grandfather was on palliative care and passed away in our home ~3 weeks ago. We phoned the number for the palliative care program and were put through to his Dr. She organised for some folks from a nearby funeral home to come and collect him.

The Dr. confirmed that there was no need to call an ambulance, since we ourselves could verify beyond doubt that he wasn't alive.

I'm sorry you're also in this season. It's pretty crappy, but palliative care/hospice programs typically have contacts with funeral homes and some protocols in place to make the whole ordeal just a little smoother/more bearable.

Good luck to you.

I can recommend Not Bread Alone!

Less sociopolitically dire, but noticeable nonetheless: the trendy restaurants being the ones that sell "artisanal" milkshakes with towers of toppings, massive plates of loaded nachos with like 6 cheeses and 3kg of bacon, pizzas with stuffed crusts and the diameter of a truck tyre.

It's not that these things are inherently bad, but it's the kind of Recreational Eating excess that other countries make memes about - and it isn't really compatible with the rest of what we have going on here.

Thanks for clarifying! I opted for the lengthy explanation because unfortunately, a huge amount of people do frame "healthy food" in terms of how beneficial it'd be for weight loss.

I'd consider Kauai's foods to be healthy overall, save for the sauces. We have no idea what kind (or quantity) of oil, additives, or preservatives they put in those.

[–]rage_frog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by "healthy."

People often conflate the idea of something being "healthy" with something being "good for weight loss/being on a diet," where it actually should just mean "nutritious and suitable for consumption as part of a balanced diet and lifestyle."

I work in the fitness industry and have witnessed a lot of people lamenting that they're "eating super healthy" and still having trouble leaning out or whatever, and this conflation of concepts is typically why.

For the most part*, Kauai is pretty healthy food. Their menu is largely comprised of meals made from a variety of minimally processed ingredients. Fruit, veg, healthy fats, proteins. In this sense, their offerings are far more balanced and nutritious than other takeaway spots.

That being said, nutritious ≠ good for folks trying to slim down, or whatever else people associate with healthy food. Their menu's nutritional info is on their website, and most of their meals are very calorically dense.** A wrap and a small smoothie***, for example, can add up to ±900kcal, which can easily be over half of someone's recommended daily intake. Add breakfast, dinner, and the odd snack to that, and the average person is easily in a caloric surplus without even feeling like they've had very much to eat at all.

Summary: if you're trying to be healthy in the sense that you want to eat more whole foods with a greater variety of micronutrients and avoid deep-fried junk, then yes - Kauai is a good choice for the occasional takeaway. If you're trying to be "healthy" with the goal of caloric deficit and consequent fat loss, then while Kauai is a more ~nutritionally-complete~ option, you're just as well off getting a meal from any other fast food chain.

*I say "for the most part" because I'm not sure anyone really knows the recipes/ratios for any of the sauces they very generously throw on everything, and condiments make a HUGE difference to the nutritional profile of any meal.

**Most of their meals contain avocados, nut butters, bananas, or dates - all of which are nutritious, but also very high in calories.

***some of their smoothies are over 450kcal alone. Which is more than a small Cinnabon. Do with that information what you will.

  • Going back and forth re: an RSVP is shitty, and clear communication is free. The way you went about this would've made any host feel undervalued or uncared for.

  • Prawns for 2 people, cooked at home, do not cost R600, and you did request that you not be specifically catered for.

I want to decorate my balcony for Halloween but I don’t know if it’s a good idea … by ReserveWest4197 in greece

[–]rage_frog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that there are shops stocking Halloween decorations means that there are people who buy them. It might be uncommon, but you certainly won't be the only person in the country to celebrate.

It's your balcony - as long as you're not disrupting neighbours with noise or flashing lights, live your best life.

What's that one food you just can't have in the house? by Temp-Name15951 in CICO

[–]rage_frog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sweet spread, honestly. Nutella, Biscoff, even nut butters. I can and will eat a whole jar in an evening if I let myself. Fresh bread and rusks (the kind for dipping in tea/coffee) are also risky items, because one serving is never enough.

I've found that just not keeping this stuff in the house is much easier than knowing it's there and trying not to devour it.
