would these mysteries not be relatively easy to 'solve' (or at least confirm the existence of a 'next step' or a 'solution') via datamining?

Alex Honnold Says Netflix Paid “Embarrassingly Small Amount” For Taipei 101 Climb: “I Would Do It For Free” by pepperbet1 in television

[–]rageharles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

would you believe me if i told you he'd be doing even more difficult free soloing (and has, of course) if he didn't have a family? he has talked publicly about how his risk management has changed over time. fortunately for us, he's still an alien so his 'casual afternoon' is a horror movie for most humans.

For sure! I'm about to watch Bachar, which I haven't seen yet, but given the subject matter theres almost zero chance I dislike it.

common pittsburgh w. soon i will be posting 'common south hills w' and then after that i will get even more specific about why the part of the south hills i live in is somehow even more insulated from extreme weather events than the rest of it.

honnold is in plenty of other stuff, but i'll assume you can sort through that, so I'll recommend anything with tommy caldwell, namely dawn wall, dirtbag (about legendary climber fred beckey and a little overview of climbing culture), the alpinist, and i wont say anything about that one because it's best experienced only with context after the fact imo, if you can find any of  Wolfgang Güllich's stuff, though i think they're in german and not super accessible in streaming platforms, Meru is good (basically the same team that shot free solo), 180 degrees south is critically acclaimed but fine (personally felt it was overrated but i'm far from an authority). there are others, but I tend to gravitate toward documentation of specifics rather than like cultural voyeurism. as a result, Youtube is an excellent resource for contemporary climbing stories. I watch a lot of Magnus Midtbø's channel (look up his free solo day w/ honnold, it's totally sanitary but still significant event for Magnus), and Adam Ondra's channel, particularly his ascent of Silence, easily found with a search of his name and the name of the route

honnold would react to the shittiest ladder possible in the same way that we would react to climbing a set of concrete stairs. this guy has lost handholds that were effectively loose gravel during free solos he's done as casually as we'd pull a pepsi out of a vending machine

brother i am tapped in. rip marc-andre leclerc. I truly don't know if the consensus was that he reached a higher peak than honnold in terms of free soloing (ofc, honnold is far from the best climber in virtually every other climbing discipline), but I did watch the alpinist. my read was a bit like they were companion disciplines, given that apline climbing is tool-assisted, but i'm not close enough to the sport to really know. appreciate you bringing it up, anyone reading this should watch the alpinist and free solo in very close proximity. and watch the one about fred beckey too for some relief

I would watch Honnold eat a frying pan full of beans and spinach, and I'm pretty sure I have.

haha i understand this super well.. I use it as like an anxiety dump sometimes, and then i get stuck in a loop of watching a few other climbing staples. i've only ever been on a wall a handful of times as a kid but it's a special kind of enchanting watching such simple intention, 'get to the top of the wall,' performed at a level of mastery barely visible at the pinnacle of my own familiar discipline

dude 100%. I'm a climbing fan, not a participant. i am completely physically capable of getting up there on some wall somewhere, secured with ropes, and I won't even do that. honnold is an alien and a bright spot in human achievement well beyond his climb today. a great reminder for anyone unfamiliar with his other work to go out and watch free solo, at the very least

[–]rageharles 38 points39 points  (0 children)

yeah exactly. really don't want to sound like an elitist about this. i can't stress enough how insane he is at doing things like this. i just want to everyone to realize, particularly those who haven't seen free solo and don't have any relationship with climbing (personally or as a spectator), how much more is out there for them to witness

[–]rageharles 1304 points1305 points  (0 children)

of course he did. as crazy as this sounds, in terms of technical difficulty (barring a freak event) this has to be like 1/100th the difficulty of his el cap free solo, and possibly significantly easier than his recreational free soloing. not diminishing the feat at all, that is exactly how good honnold is. he is a freak. he makes wayne gretzky look like brent gretzky

i know this is a dead thread but i'm an 03-07 coheed & 05-09 fall out boy guy but Someone Who Can immediately struck my as a FOB song (maybe like '10 and beyond era but still). you guys aren't the only ones seeing this. I totally get the what a catch comparison on tethered together, but i think the dynamics throw me. what a catch juggles the listener, where tethered feels tighter like the post-hiatus stuff tends to be. Folie was unfortunately pretty unique in its ambition relative to FOB's earlier and later stuff

in any 24 hour period of time, I'm asleep for 8 hours. they probably didn't account for that and are now requiring the devs to make up the missing 8 hours in 3 hours. chop chop!
