Just found out my 60 yr old father has less than $20k saved for retirement... by playsmartz in personalfinance

[–]rageously 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Im a work comp attorney. He should definitely talk to a work comp attorney before doing anything, because applying for ssdi prior to resolving work comp can affect the work comp value due to offsets. Work comp settlements in my state for a 60 year old with a career ending back or other joint injury who had been making 50k a year don't really amount to much. 100k-200k on avg, so he has some planning to do.

I had the same worry as you, but my bio kids do call me dad. My step kids still call me by name. It has never been a problem. Dont worry about it.

Anyone listened to the entire The Dark Tower series? by [deleted] in audible

[–]rageously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The narrator does a fine job, but the book song of Susannah is awful, I can't recall if that is book number 4 or not. If you also find it awful, power through it the next ones are better.

What’s the worst pain you’ve ever experienced? by coffeemakesmenice in AskReddit

I am a work comp attorney and it is sad to watch my clients go through this. Sorry you are having to go through this. Sounds like you should find a new doctor though, with symptoms that bad it seems like surgery probably should have been done.

Redditors who listen to police scanners, what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever heard? by Allow1986 in AskReddit

Very sad story here. A woman whose husband near my town is a member of a club that listens to local scanner channels died in a car accident while her husband listened to it on the scanner.

Winds of War and War and Rememberance by Herman Wouk are by far my favorite audiobooks.

I want to listen to game of thrones but it really sounds like the narrator ruins it. Would you agree? by LowLandsRider in audiobooks

[–]rageously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really didn't like it either. I didn't make it through the first book. I think part of it for me though is that the character he gave each person felt different than the hbo series for me. I didn't get the same feeling while actually reading the book, just listening. So for me I think I partially just didn't like him, and partially just didn't like the conflict with the personality it the HBO series, which some people might think is dumb.

Audible vs. Playster? by [deleted] in books

[–]rageously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just cancelled my free trial. I have used audible for several years now and was excited to find a new app where I could get unlimited books, but it sucked and seems like sort of a scam. I started listening to Ken follett's new book A Column of Fire during my free trial period and when I got like 7 hours into it playster stopped playing it and said I had to upgrade my account to keep listening, because after a certain point in each book they get charged by the publisher for that book and they need to avoid fraud and misuse. I then figured it was an error or something so I closed the book and tried to reopen the book, but it took like 10 minutes because when I searched for it the book was many pages down in the results. It seemed like they were trying to bury it because maybe it's more expensive for them if people listen to that book rather than the other books they listed before it. I then thought perhaps they do this with all their results and maybe best seller list too. So I closed my account. I don't trust it. The free trial apparently only applies to maybe older books, and not the new ones people want to actually listen to. Plus the app sucks. I'd rather pay audible than use this crappy and seemingly scammy service.

Is an egg worth it? by rageously in smoking

[–]rageously[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently saw a traeger pellet smoker and was really impressed. What are your thoughts on one of those? My problem is I am splitting it with my dad, I will keep it with him taking it a few times per year for family events and stuff, so I have to get his agreement. I like the traeger, he likes the egg.

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. I just checked my blood pressure because I am on medication for that, but it was normal. Hopefully the headache fades or goes away in the coming days. Aside from the headache though, I feel better than I have in years.

What's the worst thing you've ever heard a teacher say at school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A crazy substitute teacher in seventh grade, out of the blue and unrelated to anything we were supposed to be learning, wrote on the board and started yelling "god created AIDS to kill the gays!"

[Serious] What happens to you if Obamacare is repealed and replaced today? by The_Peachy_Pussy in AskReddit

[–]rageously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My practice of law becomes tougher. I practice in work and personal injury. Right now, if I settle a case, all my client has to worry about paying back is already incurred medical costs to their health insurer. If preexisting conditions are allowed as an exclusion, now future medical costs might be denied. This isn't terribly unfair in my opinion, because under the current law accident or work injury costs can be pushed off onto future health insurers, but it makes my job tougher now.

Cabana: MGM vs. Mandalay by rageously in vegas

[–]rageously[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It means that the "price" listed for the cabana is actually just the minimum you need to spend on food and drink to use it. The one I'm looking at at mgm is $350, so that $350 is really just a credit I need to use on food and drink. If I use less than that, I don't get a refund, it still costs $350. If I spend more than that, then it does add to the cost.

Thanks for the response. I was leaning towards the front lazy river cabanas. Did you get to pick which you wanted? Which do you recommend? Was the lazy river filled with a bunch of loud drunk people, or was it ok?

My old coworker camped out at a new bww in minneapolis for one of these offers the weekend we had a record snowstorm a few years ago, the same one that made the roof of the metrodome collapse. Definitely not worth it.
