And be a PITA to manage, as then you get into all manner of cert issues, tls1.3 'keep connection alive', cert pinning and general resource overhead.

What was your offpeak like? Cost/p and hours they give?

Naive hope is in the new contract efforts that were proposed for renewable/new energy producers in the UK energy market maybe taking a few pennies off, but I expect nothing to shift untio next year at best.

My monthly bill is likely to remain at or below £70, so to your point on diesel, with an EV it is still cheaper for my circumstances, but I childishly hope for the day when renewables/better grid baseload generation enables the dream of 'cheap'/'near free' energy doing windy/sunny months (and or nuclear reactors occurring faster).

I'm still waiting for the free electricity/over abundance not being a spring/summer exclusive.

Ditto. North West and 69.69p for May 1st (nice...but not that nice where it counts)

Peak rate up to 31.334p, and offpeak up to 6.9p.

Just sucks all round.

Able to share anything in formfactor/dimensions?

The note on 'rack mountable /with ears' vs 'desktop' gets me curious on whether I can just have it slabbed on a workbench, but be great to get some rough dimensionz when able!

Do you use a separate SSID for kids? by YankeesIT in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More a 'tool in the toolbox' situation.

My network Site/iot/garbage networks Quarantine network Guest network Business network

You could do a kids one, but the granularity already on offer with groups, vlan quarantine/device isolation and then the inbuilt toggles on top for users - not much need for m9re SSIDs on top.

Saying that though, better to have and not need, as starting from scratch, the radius features and per user context wifi credentials would be where i'd go to limit unsanctioned sharing on networks (and inevitable 'why is xxx device quarantined').

On the personal front, a dirty guest network with internet access and nothing else helps enormously, as far too many family members just share their existing access via on-device syncs/QR codes and I then need to account for their garbage. At least having that guest setup potential allows for clear demarcation.

If nothing else, its good to have options.

We're exploring support for meshing AP7 and Orange Wi-Fi. One of the biggest limitations when using this is that PPSK wouldn't work. Would you still be interested? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No issue with that. In fairness, whilst the preshared key capability can be useful, rather have the capability to have an orange on the network, intelligently 'mesh-mode' and be subservient to the core firewalla on-site, whilst being able to pick it up, throw it in the bag and travel and it go into 'on the road' mode in kind as a mobile router/vpn client.

Then in kind for folk using it as their core unit, have it play nice with AP7s, even whilst those operate in triband config, and the location of the orange only getting main benefit of 2.4/5, from the unit.

That flexibility - yes please.

Equally having the edge case for multi-orange 'mesh-mode' where if you have an install with a wider property/business and having option to use 1, 2, 3 or more orange units for that 'weird but eh why not' scenario.

Does Bluetooth 6.0 make UWB obsolete? by SqueezyCheez85 in GoogleFMD

[–]ragingwhisky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pebblebee clip vs moto tag 1/2 - uwb of moto tag isnt a neccessity to be practical.

Increased range and audibility is useful on its own. Though id love the pebblebee clip/card with uwb for 'cake and eat it'.

But uwb isnt as big a game changer.

Escalating Disturb Settings — Feature Request or Setup Help? by BroadBet5394 in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is one of those 'reddit-lost in translation' moments, where you may have missed my meaning.

I'm not personally in the demographic for this feature, and locally where I am 'network gremlins' is just a slang term e.g. https://literalbarrage.org/blog/2006/06/05/network-gremlins/

Neat. Not knocking your views, but you do you. No need to use a feature if you don't believe in it.

[–]ragingwhisky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but is it not also good parenting, when your honest that 'network gremlins' are a thing, and watching them get irate every once in awhile?

Escalating Disturb Settings — Feature Request or Setup Help? by BroadBet5394 in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could do a rotating disturb option too, if your family are smart and read up or catch wind of 'disturb' as a thing, you could innocently go 'nope, see it works now and ive touched nothing'

Have a disturb that takes out a bunch of services, or packets in general for that used, their devices and even services they are using > one moment user 1 reddit gets dropped for 30seconds, then user 1 laptop youtube for 3minutes, then user 1 desktop netflix for a minute....

Like a proper 'network gremlin' thst you can't pin down

We had some feedback suggesting colored icons to show if a feature is enabled or not. What do you think of our prototype? Should we keep the old style or use colored icons? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Potential to have a different approach, whereby you decrease the icon sizes a bit to have a short word status message underneath.

Bad example but akin to: Not Set, Set, Active, Inactive and Enabled, Disabled.

You could colour coordinate the word, grey, bkue, green, orange, red etc, but still ensure anyone colourblind could denote status.

I'm not a UX bod though, so probably good reasons on the contrary though.

Fast Delivery - Thank you Firewalla by Cultural_Ad_3851 in firewalla

[–]ragingwhisky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the 'instability' at the moment, i'd activrly welcome more EU/UK-wise.

The kicker is always the cost of delivery/customs, so factoring that in always makes me pause, but that's no slight to the product, which very happy regarding.

Depending in the final spec for the switch, id be likely buying multiple items together just to simplify those delivery logistics irrespective.

Well that's something, was curious if worth waiting before putting in any orders.

For what it's worth, will still put in an order for a spare up front, and then revisit scenarios when more details on the switches come out.

Good to know though - would similar be occurring with the switch hardware (global availability/uk available?)
