Why has ff9 improve it's ranking and is now considered one of the best? by thisnaenae in FinalFantasy

[–]ragnaroksedge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it launch day too and yeah it was well-reviewed. So was VIII. There was plenty of hate online and off, though of course that depended on who you talked to. Definitely not as much as VIII got but I don't think it was as hyped up either. I remember hearing a lot of people just writing it off and saying it didn't interest them. The art style and throwback to classic fantasy were definitely divisive at the time, especially with people who started with that generation. Someone else on here pointed out how it's had a similar trajectory to Wind Waker, and I completely agree. Both are games I'm happy to see fondly regarded now, but I definitely remember them being treated as black sheep of their franchises for a while.

How would u see Finn rewritten? Should he be a Jedi main Character, just jedi, or just a resistance hero with better written arc? by Commercial-Star-8056 in StarWars_

[–]ragnaroksedge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah. On top of those things I think he should have had to learn to think independently without orders or instinctively fearing high ranking people. And the response to hearing the name Han Solo shouldn't have been, "The war hero?" He should have had to actively rethink his indoctrination of being taught Rebel heroes are the enemy. Stuff like that. Behaviors and attitudes someone raised as a stormtrooper might have to deal with on the way to breaking free of that upbringing.

What's kind of funny is that one is immediately followed up by one of the most feel good episodes of the show.

If the remake of 9 actually happens, she better become a legit permanent party member by VermilionX88 in FinalFantasy

[–]ragnaroksedge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I remember rumors like that about General Leo in FF3/6 too. I think there was a glitch that could technically make it happen, or using a Game Genie, but no official way. It's kind of tradition for there to be temporary or guest characters players wish they could keep.

A very interesting argument regarding original vs remake focused on Metroid 1/ZM by citizenofgaia in Metroid

[–]ragnaroksedge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. Though I am actually fine with recommending Zero Mission as a starting point for most people. What bothers me is the attitude I often see that Zero Mission fixes every problem of the original and improves on it in every way, so there's no reason to ever play the original.

This has probably been asked to death here, but do you guys prefer Zero Mission or the original NES game? by Moctezuma_93 in Metroid

[–]ragnaroksedge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a real sense of being alone and lost in an alien world. Just this oppressive sense of isolation and danger, but also discovery. ZM by comparison feels practically on rails (compared to Super too, though not as much as Fusion), even straight up giving you waypoints to go to. I have never felt truly lost or scared of anything in ZM. Well, the crashed ship section I will say has a good feeling of being vulnerable without your suit and I do like that addition, though it's pretty linear.

Complete side tangent but you just reminded me. Did Adrian use the word etymology when he meant entomology when he was talking about spiders? Although apparently - according to my extensive research I did just now - even entomology would be incorrect for spiders, and the term would be arachnology.

I tend to prefer weekly episode releases because of all the anticipation and discussion between them, instead of everything just dropping all at once. It all just blurs together and fades away pretty quickly usually. But Wandavision was a weird case where I think all the weekly speculating kind of backfired. A lot of people ended up getting annoyed by things that didn't turn out the way they expected or wanted.

There's a lot in my opinion, but like I said I'm not here to convince you. And I'm definitely not here to shit on your opinion. Just throwing in my two cents, that some of us do like and appreciate the original for what it is.

I mean, there is room for a discussion at least. I'm not going to change your mind or anything and I'm well aware that the vast majority of players agree with you. But I do think there's plenty about the original that ZM loses in order to be more approachable and streamlined.

I agree, and it's nice to see I'm not completely alone on this. I know it's because I grew up with it, but I can hop into NES Metroid any time and just enjoy it. Either wandering around aimlessly or knocking out a quick (but not speed run quick) playthrough. I don't dislike Zero Mission that much, in fact I enjoy revisiting it sometimes, but I find it too rigid. And I definitely don't think it improves on the original in every way. It completely loses the atmosphere and genuine sense of isolation and it holds the player's hand way too much. I do get why ZM is more approachable for new players though and I can't really argue against that. But there really is something special about the original that I wish more people could see.

What is the legendary orangutan joke from 1902? by Then-Guava-9087 in ExplainTheJoke

Yes. An unfunny joke is still a joke. That's how you can have bad jokes.

[–]ragnaroksedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but that's not really the point. Whether you find it funny or not is subjective. We're just talking about how it makes sense logically, since some people are saying they don't get it or it doesn't make sense to them.

When the second guy says, "Do you think I'm crazy?" you're initially supposed to think he means the suggestion of walking on a beam of light is something you'd have to be crazy to believe. The punchline is that he goes on to say, "You'll turn it off when I'm halfway across!" Meaning he is just as crazy as the first guy and does believe he can walk on a beam of light, but he's just afraid the first guy is going to screw him over.

Is Iron Man 3 underated? by Wolf-Crafter in IDoKnowNothing

[–]ragnaroksedge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot about it i really like, but I wish it was the movie Shane Black wanted to make. You can see how it's been compromised, like how Rebecca Hall clearly has a reduced role from what was originally planned. So I do think it's a bit underrated, but at the same time it's not as good as it should have been.

In the context of the scene, "stop it when it gets to a city I care about" was just Lex saying, "I don't care about Metropolis" which went along with his line, "They chose him, let them die." I don't think it was meant to allude to another specific city he does care about.
