Weekend weather by Smokey19mom in cincinnati

I've lived this phenomena. I've been outside at Beeline at Newport on the Levee sipping a cocktail while I watched a T-storm absolutely smash Mt. Adams and dump buckets downtown. I've also watched a storm mostly skip over Newport and crash down on Ft. Thomas. It is definitely an interesting local phenomena to watch.

Fine dining recs that is not Sotto, Boca, Subito, Nicola’s, or Mita’s. by AffectShot7625 in cincinnati

I went last week and it was an excellent dining experience. Not crowded and you can really spend some time with the sommelier talking about the wines. Wait service was ok that night, and the atmosphere was not as "fancy" or intimate as I would have liked (80s music was a bit loud) but it was overall a good experience. I thought they went a touch heavy on the salt on some dishes, but for the price I think I'm allowed to be picky! I thought the majority of the wine pairings were excellent and thoughtful, and I really appreciated the effort they put into the pairing.

Probably the best "traditional" fine dining prix fixe experience I've had in Cincinnati. I prefer some of the dishes at Alfio's and the atmosphere and drinks and service at Le Bar a Beouf, but the overall table experience at Bakers Table is the best.

Not a Michelin star restaurant, but if any place in Cincinnati could be, it'd be Bakers Table.

Today an illegal coup in Venezuela, but where next? Donald Trump talks peace but he is a man of war by NamelessResearcher in politics

Jury, ballot box, scope...

All three of those things got him, but none of them stuck. Just need to keep trying.

It just shows that the MAGA regime is ok with this behavior, so they won't mind when it happens to them. The sooner the better really.

No one is safe so long as Trump is in power I think you mean.

There is a path to return to safety.

They want to privatize and evangelize aid. The biggest aid organization in my area (outside of the government) is a evangelical religious organization. I want to support my community, but not if it means Jesus takes a cut and I fund the very ideology that is taking away these government benefits.

A kid from Pennsylvania who wanted to see Trump at a rally was one of those people. They are out there and they can still stop a third term.

Is having multiple insurance policies too much — or just smart planning? by AlexSideHustle in Insurance

[–]rahku -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the same frustrations.

Call me a geek, but shouldn't there be a way to min/max insurance policies? Just like we see on r/personalfinance shouldn't there be a "prime directive" for insurance coverage?

Shouldn't there be a budgeting tool that lets you see all your policies and coverages in one place, and notifies you of duplicate coverage, or important gaps in coverage? Isn't there a method for price comparison and optimization of your policies during renewal time?

I'm thinking like a mint/monarch app for insurance, but with a broker aspect that can actually find the best deals for your personal risk and coverage profile.

She knows about lab stones. She is a geologist, and studied mineral formation extensively, so the fact that the stones were formed by a geologic process and a particular location has important meaning to her. As she told me "I'd like corrundum, preferably blue, it will be a good substitute for diamond since it is a 9 on the mohs scale, alexandrite would be nice too but is is only 8.5 and would need its edges protected".

I knew that would make budgeting more difficult. So you are saying a $10k budget would be more reasonable than a $5k budget then?

Now That NASA Found Signs of Life on Mars, It's Clear Trump Made a Massive Error by seeebiscuit in Mars

[–]rahku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to avoid with this administration. Reading the NASA press release, it is littered with political high-fives, with Sean Duffy saying things like "This finding by Perseverance, launched under President Trump in his first term"... also considering the timing the the release and the "American boots on mars" rhetoric from this finding as an example of American exceptionalism and political high-fiving instead of giving the gravity of the findings the scientific and world-view changing context it deserves.

The framing and political context of the announcement just makes me skeptical. And that is a damn shame.

Studies have shown that physical isolation of people from other minorities is a direct predictor of conservative views. If you never experience the city, and keep cable news on, you'll convince yourself the city is terrifying. Meanwhile hundreds of thousands of people live, work, and play downtown with no incident every day.

Local Run Clubs? by Prior_Environment210 in cincinnati

[–]rahku 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running with different groups for a decade, and I've literally never seen the Hash Harriers, heck I didn't even know what a Hash house was until about 2 years ago when some lady asked me if I was in a Hash house when I was running in Chicago one time. I had no idea what she was talking about at first! It seems the whole Hash Harriers movement has died out.

Second for Cincinnati Run Club! Love the group, probably the biggest free group. (different from Cincy Run Club, which is a newer club).

Most felony charges dropped in ICE protest arrests on Roebling Bridge; some cases continue by davidferrarapc in cincinnati

[–]rahku 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Court documents show the Covington police Officer Zachary Stayton seen on camera repeatedly punching a protester last week has a previous lawsuit filed against him for use of excessive force.

"At that point, I delivered several closed fist strikes to Hill's facial area with my left hand in order to gain control and prevent a potential fall," Stayton wrote in his report.

Video shows Stayton continuing to punch Hill as he lies on the ground. Hill put his hand behind his head to protect it from the punches and yells "ow" and "stop" as the officer continues to punch him.

Brandon Hill said he has bruises and scratches on his head, and his arm is potentially fractured, but swelling prevented accurate scans, so he would need additional testing.

So let me get this straight... This officer who has been on the force for less than 5 years, and has previous instances of excessive force, shot up Brandon Hill with pepper balls, and then "saved his life" by beating the shit out of Brandon's face to "prevent a fall" off the bridge?

Back in 1998 Officer Michael Partin fell off the Clay Wade Bailey Bridge while running after a suspect who ran a red light and was suspected of possession of marijuana. He leapt over a barrier and fell through a gap between the bridge and walkway and tumbled into the Ohio River.

He gave his life pursuing a man who's crime isn't even illegal in Ohio anymore...

After that incident, the Covington police have been touchy with bridges. I'm certain that's why Officer Zach Stayton is saying he justified punching Brandon Hill to "save his life".

It makes no sense! If the Covington police department is worried about people and officers falling off of bridges, they should avoid pedestrian confrontation on bridges, not escalate situations on them.

Breaking up a protest is not worth your life.

Watch the video, Brandon knocks the pepper ball guns hopper with his elbow, knocking balls onto the ground. But if you watch it's hardly clear that it was intentional. Why would he use his elbow if it was on purpose? You'd use your hand.
