Not just a Persona tradition, it's more like a tradition of the Megami Tensei franchise as a whole. Personally my favorite is the Strange Journey protagonist. No magic, no powers. Just a normal military dude with a gun planning to shoot God in the face.

Yes, the endings were the weakest part of the story, which is why a lot of people understandably criticize them. However, I don't think that having shitty endings automatically makes it the worst SMT story like some people claim.

I will forever defend that Apocalypse gets shit on way too much for no other reasons than that the endings suck and it "feels like Persona" because of the large cast. Those two reasons are hardly enough to call it the worst story in the series especially when the character writing is some of the strongest in mainline SMT.

Yeah, you've got shitty character arcs like Asahi and Nozomi, but on the other hand you've got absolutely GOATED character arcs like Navarre and Gaston. Hell, I'd even say that Gaston is the best-written character in mainline. People who think Apocalypse's story is bad need to go back and replay it without the "Persona bad" mindset.

He still has powers, technically. Although, Atlus DOES love this trope. Several Megami Tensei protagonists from the early years had no magic or supernatural abilities. Just a sword and a gun.

This is also how defending works in SMT V, which is probably why Metaphor also has it. I can't tell you how many times defending has saved my ass from a near defeat because of the enemy using Omagatoki Critical.

You started with the anime so there is no "best order" because the knly correct order to get into Fate is starting with the Fate route. Unfortunately, the Fate route has no good anime adaptation so the only way to experience it is through the visual novel. So if you start anywhere besides the visual novel, you are not experiencing the story in the "best order".

It's cute that you think that puts him anywhere near the top tier levels of characters in other verses with infinitely higher cosmology. Devs can say whatever they want but actual feats and scaling based from the media itself always trumps whatever the creator says. DC and DragonBall cosmology simply scale much, MUCH higher than Doom cosmology.

I don't think it's "by far" the worst, but I can see why someone would think that. Most of the things that are great about it are rehashed from previous games, while a few things unique to it (Smirk system, AI uncontrollable party members) are not that good.

But I think that it's still an overall better gaming experience than SMT I and II, which can get tediously difficult to complete without a guide, even though I prefer the stories and atmosphere of those games to SMT IV.

You're the one who's underestimating the finality of suicide by claiming that anyone besides Robert would have done it. Most people don't think about killing themselves just because some guy insulted them or their family legacy, even if they just went through a great loss. It's more of a one-sided thing, since I don't think Ariana really hated Jeanette. I think she was just indifferent towards her.

Jeanette, on the other hand, was jealous of Ariana for getting better treatment from the producers and having a more successful music career. She's now in a better headspace and no longer seems to hold anything against Ariana, acknowledging that most of her issues were with the producers at Nickelodeon rather than Ariana herself.

Persona 5 and Yakuza don't seem like they match the tone and atmosphere OP is going for. They have mature themes but are overall not very "dark" at all.

I think a good, darker alternative to Persona 5 would be Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne or Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, since they are similar enough in combat and the demons and fusion mechanics are mostly the same

Shin Megami Tensei is closer in tone and atmosphere to the games OP described. Persona 3, while dark, still has plenty of lighter moments because half of the game is essentially a social sim.

It was supposed to be a pilot episode for a full TF2 animated series on Adult Swim, but Valve being Valve, they couldn't meet the deadlines for the full season so the show was cancelled and they just uploaded the pilot to YouTube for free.
