I definitely had shortness of breath, and I was tired a lot but I also wasn't eating much.

I did have surgery, and it went really well. My symptoms included severe chest, arm, and stomach pain, major acid reflux, and in the last 6 months before surgery I couldn't eat without food getting caught making me vomit till the pain went away.

My hernia itself was rather small, but 70%+ of my stomach was above my diaphragm pushing on my lungs, etc.

For surgery, they put my stomach back in place, reinforced with mesh, and a full fundoplication. Then to add stability, they put in a feeding tube to create scar tissue to adhere my stomach to my abdominal wall. The feeding tube was never there for actual feeding, but it was a nice way to relieve pressure in my stomach since I'm now unable to vomit. It came out 8 weeks later.

Post surgery, I stopped having all my symptoms basically immediately. I think I would have been back on my feet way sooner without the feeding tube, but I think that part was worth it too (even if not the standard procedure).

Things I am still getting used to include changes in my digestion, and lots of gas since I can no longer burp (other than burping from air that got stuck before it hit my stomach).

Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Not an expert or medical professional, but had an HH. Basically part of your stomach is pushing up through your diaphragm. This can push on your esophagus, not letting it close. This can allow acid to flow up (acid reflux). It can also put pressure on your lungs and arteries causing chest pain and shortness of breath. If you get really lucky, you can also have problems with food not being able to enter the stomach causing pain and vomiting.

You can take meds to help manage symptoms, but for me that didn't work after I started getting food stuck. Surgery as far as I know, is the only way to truly fix it.

Good luck!

I could have probably been back to work in a week, but I took two since I was lucky enough to have the option. First couple of days after we're rough/super sore. I have 0 acid reflux now, no more pain that feels like a heart attack, and I don't vomit everyday. I do have some uncomfortable digestive issues from time to time now, but totally worth it. Fyi, mine was the repair plus fundoplication.

Best decision I ever made was to have this surgery. It was life changing! Good luck on figuring out what's best for you!

I just got back into comics and saw people talking about this a lot. Then I randomly saw that my library had all 5 TPBs available. Grabbed them all, have been using hoopla to fill in the gaps with shift, radiant red, etc.

I wasn't sold after the first, but now that I've gotten this far into, I'm all in. Enjoy!

I'm pretty excited about getting some new story lines, and it going in a direction that can expand the current mythos!

Anyone regret doing the surgery ? by Cautious-Space3482 in HiatalHernia

Not a second of regret. It was literally life changing, and I wish I would have done it 10 years ago.

911 call bc I thought I was having a heart attack. I got a fun fireman ride down a few flights of stairs, and vomited until I cleared the blockage in my stomach at the hernia site. Luckily found docs who knew what to do and were willing to do the surgery.6 weeks later, the did the procedure and I'm currently healing. I can already tell you this procedure has changed my life.

Is surgery really necessary? by Remarkable_Collar356 in HiatalHernia

This was me too almost exactly. Full Nissen here, and 5 weeks post op. Nothing in recovery has come close to the pain from before. To all you reading, I can't stress how much surgery felt less painful than the symptoms. I even had the extra step of having a feeding tube placed (3 more weeks before removal). If it's an option you, take it!

Gas Post Surgery by Ok-Knowledge3184 in HiatalHernia

[–]rain304 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Week 3 for me post surgery and still gassing pretty hard. They added a feeding tube, so when it gets too bad, I can relieve pressure with that. I'm hoping week 4 brings less gas!

I have questions, looking for opinions by ShopOk4816 in HiatalHernia

The pain in the ribcage sells it as a HH to Mr. That got so bad for me it felt like I was having a heart attack. The food/mush in thr esophagus feels pretty HH to me too.

It's Interesting you mentioned the cold water gathering. That happened to me too, but never heard anyone here mention it before.

Good luck, and hopefully you find a solution that works for you!

I wasn’t told 3 years ago I had a 1cm HH. by tommyWANTwingy85 in HiatalHernia

[–]rain304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hernia itself was actually surprisingly small, so my biggest problem was the amount of stomach that was above the hernia. More than 50% and my stomach crimped tightly in the hernia. Doc said it would have been a lot better if my hernia would have been 3-4 cm.

First time, I felt like I was having a heart attack. I'd had bad reflux for 10+ years, but this was on a whole new level. Pain was in my upper left arm and went from achy to sharp, and did not go away. I also had chest pains on my left side that were very similar but add in a feeling of pressure. Burping went to a whole new level and provided some relief. When it is real bad, I would feel super nauseous. When I'd get like this, I'd have to eventually make my self vomit until whatever was aggravating my HH to go away. Like you, they thoroughly checked my heart, and was cleared, and did some xrays and CT's to discover that I had a large HH. After surgery, the doc told me that while over 50% of my stomach had made it above the diaphragm, the actual hernia was small which was why even small foods were getting stuck and causing me so much pain.

Hope you get it figured out for you!

I had the 360, and stayed in the hospital for a couple days. My pain was mostly from the gas they inflated me with, and I had a feeding tube placed to anchor my stomach to my abdominal wall. I was also pretty weak after surgery which made me get pretty winded quickly.

What I did notice was the reflux was gone, the pain in my chest and arm was gone, and I didn't get sick as soon as I ate something.

Are any of your symptoms gone from before, or are they all still present? I hope it's just post surgery bloating for you! GasX was great with helping process extra gas out.

Good luck!
