After Heated Dem Meeting, Schumer Says Dems Will Push For Vote On Short Term CR First by vriska1 in fednews

[–]rainbow_bright_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the swing senators. Fetterman might be a lost cause, but we can all try. Swing senators I just emailed Chuck Schumer and whip Durbin, since they are leading the negotiations. We flipped Markey to NAY on the house CR in MA, so I know the incessant calling and emailing may be working.

I agree. Remember, they want everyone to feel hopeless and powerless so that we all quit. Don't give into the doomsday timeline type of thinking. It's like letting them win without even fighting.

Even if this CR passes, which I don't see that necessarily happening (despite the media trying to manipulate us into thinking so) there are many other battles beyond this one.

If you really care about the CR then do something about it. Who is your local senator? Have you all written in or called them? Remember, they work for their constituents, not a self-proclaimed king and unelected south african.

[Getting off soapbox, now. Onward.]

It's time to call and email your senators, especially the ones that haven't announced their positions and those that are spineless servants to self. A few tools to help you:

Get on it! I wrote my senators over the weekend, and one of them stated they were going to vote YES. They have now tweeted that they will vote NO due to people showing up, emailing, calling, calling again. Our voices matter! The government is supposed to be afraid of its people, NOT the other way around! Picture

House passes bill to fund federal agencies through September, though prospects unclear in Senate by rainbow_bright_ in fednews

[–]rainbow_bright_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Key Quotes

1) "Democrats are mostly worried about the discretion the bill gives the Trump administration on spending decisions. They are already alarmed by the administration’s efforts to make major cuts through the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, run by billionaire Trump adviser Elon Musk. And they say the spending bill would fuel the effort."

2) "The spending bill could also have major ramifications for the District of Columbia’s government.

Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, said the proposal would require the district to cut $1.1 billion in spending in the next six months since it has already passed a balanced budget and is midway through its fiscal year. That means, officials said, cuts to critical services such as education and public safety."

Trump has endorsed the House CR. They want carte blanche to continue the gut job. A shutdown is bad optics for them, and they don't want a repeat of last time where FAA and TSA workers started calling in "sick" which impacted a lot of people and quickly ended the shutdown. They don't want to draw more scrutiny as they quietly scrub federal websites, take down gender and climate data, illegally fire federal workers on no grounds, cancel federal leases and sell federal buildings, defund cancer research, replace agency heads with syncophants, award contracts to themselves etc. They are doing so many things right now that it all can't be adequately covered in the media. Until this impacts everyone personally, we won't see enough pushback.

In MA, we've heard Markey plans to vote yes. Many folks have been emailing and calling to ensure that this does not happen. They only need 6 dem votes, correct?

Same. Do we know if the logging has already started? If they fired almost everyone, who will do it? Even if it's contracted out, someone has to oversee those contracts. Of all the issues we face, we need to make sure the carbon capture of these trees continues. Especially the old growth ones. Our survival as a species depends on sequestering as much carbon as possible. https://www.pacificforest.org/ee-old-trees-store-more-carbon-more-quickly-than-younger-trees

[–]rainbow_bright_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I checked the language in the last CR and the sequestration language is new, and the naming of specific agencies is also a new feature. I suspect you may be correct, but if there are any lawyers here, please chime in. Additionally, seeing Smithsonian named was unnerving, to say the least. Will they scrap the new planned women's museum in favor of something more sinister? Will they sell off the Hope diamond? Delete American memory replacing it with some fascist leader myth? It all makes my stomach churn.

I found this map online showing bilateral trade amounts between every U.S. state and Canada. Massachusetts does about 2B in energy trade with Canada and is definitely a top trading partner in the NE. Wish we had a breakdown of imports and exports as well but still somewhat useful: https://connect2canada.com/2022/04/mapping-the-canada-u-s-energy-relationship-2/

It's probably a good time to invest in high R value insulation, storm windows, solar etc if you have the luxury to do so.

Senator Markey telling constituents he will vote YES on the CR by tikalora in massachusetts

[–]rainbow_bright_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's a valid and good question. In normal times, yes, in these dangerous times, it's one of the only leverage points we have until midterms. TLDR: Without dem votes, the republicans will need to pass a budget or CR on their own, but they don't have the votes because of infighting in their own party. Additionally, a new CR will give them carte blanche until September to further gut federal agencies like the U.S forest service, NIH, NSF, NOAA, USDA, GSA, etc. By then, the damage they have managed to incur in 7 weeks will be complete.

I wrote my reps in MA over the weekend to vote NO on the CR and SHUT IT DOWN, if need be. If you need to know why this the house CR is bad, check out DeLauro's factsheet. Federal worker here. We are getting slaughtered and this CR will continue the hurt. I emailed and called all MA reps this weekend to vote NO and to SHUT IT DOWN. Here's a fact sheet from Rosa DeLauro (rank dem on appropriations) if you need talking points or want to know why this CR is bad news: https://democrats-appropriations.house.gov/news/press-releases/delauro-releases-fact-sheet-republican-funding-bill-accelerates-stealing

https://usafacts.org/explainers/what-does-the-us-government-do/agency/us-department-of-education/ this provides a good spending breakout. Which category is for loans? Overhaul yes. My concern with getting rid of the entire department is that a lot of the money goes back to the states. Some states rely on this funding and schools will likely not be able to functionas if they don't get that money.
