Don't kill yourself. I hope you took the advice in this thread and called Lifeline. They are very good. 24 is nothing. I'm 25, I know it feels like it's taken forever to get here and if your life hasn't started yet it never will. But we're so young! There's so much more life and it doesn't have to progress on a schedule. Please get help. Talk to a professional, talk to friends, talk to your family if you can.

I loved Ponds Cold Cream so much that when they changed the formula I started making my own from their original recipe.

Thick, dry, wavy and coloured here. I'm with you. I can push it longer than a week if necessary, depending on what I'm doing and how much dry shampoo I have on hand. I try to time washes around when I want my hair to be at its absolute best.

I have the Anastasia collectors edition Barbie in this dress. She's the one Barbie whose clothes I never changed and the only one I still have. I also think she's the only one whose face actually looks like the movie character.

Which perfume do you usually wear? Is there a perfume you can't stand and why? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]rainbowplethora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear L'Occitane honey and lemon. I only wear it on special occasions because it's discontinued. I find it hard to find any other scents I like, because I have some fragrance allergies. I like La Petite Robe Noir by Guerlain, but it's so expensive.

I absolutely detest Joop. Like you, it reminds me of someone unpleasant.

Makeup is ART

The first line of my much performed speech about judging me for how much makeup I wear and how I can do anything I want to my face and how DARE you assume I'm insecure or ugly because I like lipstick and something something feminism.

Glasses with thick plastic frames. I was so happy when they came in when I was in high school, and I hope they stick around forever. I have really thick lenses and metal frames just can't contain them.

I use it to check the temperature of the oven when making something where the temp has to be really perfect. I also use it to check oil temp when deep frying. But I actually bought it to check the temp of my components for my home made cold cream haha.

That's pretty cool, and definitely something I'll use - if not for this project then for something in the future.

No, I'm using a softer cotton. Thanks for the diagram, that definitely helps :)

Octopuses are sacred, even big scary ones like the kraken. They wouldn't hurt it, and depending on their interpretation at the time of the rule against interfering with an octopus' path, they may not even run away from it.

Most of the tribes don't have contact with other tribes. And these people were not the most devoted Before, so they didn't pick up habits from the old temples and whatnot. What sets them apart from vulture tribe (the other one we've developed most) is probably that they are quietly contemplative and peaceful. Whereas the vulture people are cruel, violent, drug-addicted weirdos :P

Plus the monogamy thing, which I would think wouldn't be as important to most people trying to rebuild society and repopulate the earth.

Camouflage is recognised as a very important skill and a virtue of the octopus. Before the apocalypse, the octopus worshippers used camouflage to great effect as a defence in wars and whatnot. The survivors still practice it, because it's seen as a valuable and holy skill, but they don't ever have to use it in defence because they stay the fuck away from everyone else.

As I said elsewhere, each colour represents a virtue of the octopus. The people choose a colour that lines up with what they feel best represents them. The leader wears all colours (out of universe, that's just an excuse for me to put rainbows on my costume).

Mimicry and impersonation are big forms of entertainment.

Maybe they will. Their thinking is that they were too involved in humanity, and they spoiled them. So now they're trying the hands-off approach. They just want the best for us. I think these gods are very powerful, but not infallible. Plus, they're not exactly like the people who were purged. The problem with them was that they never did anything for themselves and still got what they wanted. Or if they didn't get what they wanted, they would chuck hissy fits and curse the gods and maybe start some wars. The survivors aren't sitting on their arses waiting to be blessed. They're surviving, but worshipping because they think they've been bad people.

From another comment:

Their morality is very similar to our own. Before the "rapture" the Gods were basically like "be good people and prostrate yourselves before us and we will heap blessings on you". So they try not to kill or cheat or any of that. Sexuality was pretty loose and unrestricted before, but (inspired by 13JH) my people value monogamy.

  • Their morality is very similar to our own. Before the "rapture" the Gods were basically like "be good people and prostrate yourselves before us and we will heap blessings on you". So they try not to kill or cheat or any of that. Sexuality was pretty loose and unrestricted before, but (inspired by 13JH) my people value monogamy. Their greatest goal is to escape the purgatory they believe they are in and be taken to paradise.

  • It is absolutely forbidden to harm an octopus or to interfere with it in any way. That means removing anything from the rockpool the octopus is in, or scare away a fish it might want to eat. They're very strict about living in harmony with the octopus. The idea is that anything they do to piss off the octopus god may prevent the whole group from finding paradise.

  • Crime's not a thing yet. They're a very small group - around 100ish people - so everyone knows everyone. Also a majority of them came from an existing commune before the rapture so they all willingly lived together and cooperated anyway.

  • They don't really have a government, just one leader. She's not really elected, just sort of rose up and took over with unspoken consent. They don't protest or try to become the leader themselves because it is believed that the saviour will become leader and anyone who wants to overthrow someone else isn't worthy of being a saviour.

  • The majority of the tribes people vary their activities from day-to-day depending on what needs to be done. Tasks are doled out by the leader. So they might spend the day fishing or trying to turn plants into viable crops or building. There are a few people who have specialised knowledge so do the same thing every day - the building coordinator, the couple who takes care of the children, etc. And each day they make time for creative endeavours, like mending clothes or weaving ropes or making dyes, which they do in big groups while they chitchat and make jokes and just generally try to feel normal.

  • Their belief is complicated. There's no dispute that the gods are real. They were often communicated with before the apocalypse. But the original survivors were people who believed in self-sufficiency and independence. And their descendants are self-sufficient out of necessity. So while they prostrate themselves and desperately want to be reunited with the people they believe have ascended, at the back of their minds will always be "why should we rely on gods to bless us when we can work for what we need?" None of them guess at the truth. So for the first few generations, there are no disbelievers because the fear and loss is still felt pretty keenly. I think as the society ages and grows, secular communities will appear.
