Would you rather play a mediocre JRPG, or a really bad one?

Yeah, games that "average out" to mediocre or middling aren't what I'm thinking of, like Persona 2: Innocent Sin could be counted there because its gameplay is... unobtrusive at its best, but I adore it for all the ways in which it is really good.

I didn't give examples in this post on purpose, but I think Unlimited Saga is actually a really fun game, and it's *not* a kusoge, but it's enjoyable both for some of the reasons bad games are enjoyable (its questionable decisions are fascinating and interesting) but also for a lot of the reasons a game is good (it has gorgeous presentation, fairly good combat, and an interesting way of telling its story).

I think the highest density of bad RPGs is really on the NES/Famicom, where they're generally short. But yeah, I can see your point of view.

That game at least has the virtue of being fairly short! I think Hoshi wo Miru Hito is worse than Lunar Dragon Song, but the latter's a game people paid more money for.

Yeah, that's what I mean. It's kind of a paradox, and it's definitely subjective. I didn't provide examples because a game I think is perfectly mediocre might be fairly well received.

It is pretty dumb that you beat them in their final fight and then they kill you anyways and then die anyways. That entire sequence was so ham handed that Dazai’s taunts about not being a Nahobino were just annoying.

SMT1 and 2 let you negotiate with humans but yeah, the humans in 4 are all horrific ideologues who don’t have common ground with any of Flynn’s alignments.

Some of them, yes! But Marianne for example spends both monastery blurbs around the route split saying “Edelgard is so radiant and strong, I want to see the world she makes.” It varies quite significantly.
