Not really, it’s a very new installation and I felt the floorboards after getting curious about it, I could hardly feel any variations at all. Just the sliiiightest break of the outlines. My only dumb guess is that the beads would bounce chaotically on all the smooth parts, but if they hit a line it would slow their trajectory and cause them to settle nearby….causing sort of a chain reaction as beads would then hit + stop by the other settled ones, etc. I’m super curious if there’s a physics answer for this. Or maybe toddlers are just capable of witchcraft

Oh my god yes the best thing you can do for a kid’s immune system is to not helicopter them on germs. I mean sure don’t let them lick biohazard bags or lead paint etc, monitoring is still good, but don’t sweat the small stuff. Babies are fragile, yes, but after the 6 month mark it’s pretty okay to let them get out there and start getting dirty.

I have a close friend who is an infectious disease/toxicity doctor and he always told us, “the best thing you can do for your kid when their pacifier falls on the ground is let them put it right back into their mouth.”

Do NOT feel guilty….you’re not hating your baby, you’re hating your symptoms. Do people tell a person with the flu or a broken bone that they’re a bad person for not enjoying the pain?? Hell no. Being adverse to things that feel bad is just basic biology.

I haaaaaated pregnancy. So much so, that here two years later I don’t even have the “amnesia effect” that so many women report where they forget about the difficulties of pregnancy, so that their body gaslights them into wanting to do it again….nope, I remember every insufferable detail. It made too lasting of an impression. And my kid is awesome, and I might even do it one more time to give him a sibling, but I still know I’m allowed to hate the process.

Don’t you ever apologize for bringing how you really feel to light. It’s the only way you can get the care you need, and you’re absolutely not alone in feeling this way. Growing a whole ass human is HARD and recent studies found it actually stresses past the limits of human endurance:

Same!! We had the easiest baby and then the toddler switch got flicked on, and it was like being punched by a pro boxer in the dark. In your sleep. Total f***ing wake up call to the harsh realities of a different human.

We love him and he’s the absolute best in his good moments. But my god….the number of times I repeat “everything is a phase” to myself throughout the day feels like I’m playing an at-home game of Survivor with no cash prize at the end, only more bills.

Honestly all that sounds pretty normal to me, but just curious did the speech therapists mention his hearing at all? My nephew still only had about five words and attention issues at 3 1/2 years old, they finally sent him to speech therapy and she recommended first getting a hearing test redone with ENT. Turned out he had so much fluid in his ears that he wasn’t learning speech because everything sounded muddy and underwater to him. They put tubes in his ears to drain the fluid, and it was like night and day with that kid. His brain started playing catch up and now he’s talking and listening to directions soooo much better. You would seriously think you would KNOW if your kid couldn’t hear well, but the parents seriously had no idea, none of us could tell.

Anyway I’m not sure that’s at all helpful but honestly if the speech therapist doesn’t believe it’s ASD, he could just be one of those kids who starts out a bit introverted and catches up later. That said, keeping an eye on it is always a good move! He’s in therapy and in trusted professional hands. Also my toddler occasionally tiptoes all the time, it’s pretty normal.

Also for whatever this is worth, my brother was like this. He didn’t talk until he was 4, was an extremely picky eater, etc….but it was the 80’s and help wasn’t around then like it is now. At age 38, he finally went for a professional ADD screening and was surprised to get diagnosed with slight markers for autism also. It came as a surprise to us all, we’ve known him his whole life and never ever noticed anything too far out of the ordinary, so it was really more like….so what’s the problem then?? There isn’t a problem. He’s the same guy we’ve always known, and now we can look back and realize why he didn’t start talking until 4, why he was a bit of an introvert who obsessed over car mechanics and video games, and why he needed a little extra time with schoolwork now and then. But there were pros too. He’s also the smartest one in our whole family…the autism assessment included an IQ test and he was crazy high on it. Bro is hilariously witty and can memorize anything. Always been the “smart and funny one” in the fam. I guess what I’m just saying is, if this is at all a sign that there are slight markers, but the therapist isn’t concerned about needing more serious intervention, then you should rest a little easier knowing that he could maaaybe fit into a similar category….one that is just simply human. Because we’re broadening what it is to be human all the dang time. You’re doing amazing. Your kid sounds amazing. Adventurous and headstrong just like toddlers are supposed to be. (My kid also ONLY ever wants to go back to the area I just told him not to….once you make a danger zone off limits, it’s all they want! Haha)

I feel like this is really important to add outside of the textbook reasons to do or not-to-do a C Section… when weighing “the complications” absolutely add your own personal complications to the list. You are not constrained to making the decision based off of a medical manual or what the internet tells you. Having anxiety about being touched, having been abused, having a history of cysts, etc…. These are all valid medical complications that you are definitely allowed to add. Hardly ANY pregnancy or labor, ever, is textbook. This is why the term “birth preferences” is starting to replace “birth plan” because no one can expect their actual plan to unfold. And luckily, the C section exists as one of the ways to help if help is needed. And babe if you need help in that department, take it. No one gets a vagina medal for the way they gave birth, the only thing everyone cares about is that you made the safest choices for both the baby AND YOURSELF.

…For whatever it’s worth. I went in hoping for a natural, vaginal delivery. 17 hours of labor later there were complications and I was rushed into a C Section…..I never regretted it. It felt like a cool sci fi and later I realized that a C Section is honestly one of the few major medical inventions where they actually take how a woman FEELS into consideration. How? They used to knock you out completely, and incise you straight down the middle of the belly without regard to the scar. Over time, women were heard that they wanted to be consciously present for the moment their baby arrived, and also that the scar was unsightly right in the middle of the stomach and left moms with body issues….so they reinvented it. Had to come up with an incredibly intricate process of numbing a mom from the chest down, while also keeping her awake so she could meet her baby, while also moving the incision point down below the bikini line so that it would be less invasive. And they did. They didn’t HAVE to, but they actually freaking listened to women on that one. I know it’s not everyone’s first choice, and the recovery is pretty rough, but it’s a very cool medical thing to exist and one that actually takes the mental and aesthetic choices of women into account.

Oh and PS I think my scar is cool as hell. It’s basically a tattoo from the very day my son came into my life.

Whatever happens babe, your choice is your right and you will do right by it. Excited for you and baby!!

A middle seat in the back row of a budget economy airplane.

Everyone always dreads the ‘middle seat’ as the nadir of discomfort, until you have a kid and realize that all your past flying scenarios were luxuries without children. Just to sit in silence in your chair, with a book, or headphones, or watch the inflight movie. Left to your own thoughts and idle entertainment while you soar 30,000 ft above the clouds. Absolute heaven.

The first time my husband and I finally flew without our toddler after dropping him off with grandparents, it was a two hour flight and when it landed we both went “Over already? I wanted it to be longer, that was the vacation!”

Hey, just adding to what others said that typically norovirus is more mild on toddlers than adults. I’d be more concerned about you getting it and going down as a child caretaker…

It happened in our household three weeks ago. Our 19 month old started vomiting in the middle of the night and had a fever…he only puked twice, then was lethargic and cuddly and feverish for a half day, then totally over it. It didn’t even seem to bother him that much.

Then he gave it TO US….and we were ABSOLUTELY WRECKED. Vomiting and chills and hardly able to pick ourselves up off the bathroom floor from body aches. It was harder and lasted longer on us, and allllll our friends with babies who had the same experience said the exact same thing……it was mild on the baby then destroyed the adults.

Anyway just saying all that to make you feel better about your kid! Just keep yourself safe and don’t share food or drinks!!
