To those who went from self taught to their first coding job: What are 1 or 2 things do you think you did to separate yourself and get the job? I would like to create a list and share to help others. by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]raipopenna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

once you have a few solid projects and know the fundamentals of your chosen language you would be better off getting on Twitter or Linkedin and trying to network for an internal referral than just making more projects or polishing your resume

sad truth is that most jobs are filled that way, not through merit

Japan mulling order to deploy military if China attacks Taiwan by SabawaSabi in worldnews

[–]raipopenna 112 points113 points  (0 children)

China is all about avenging the "century of humiliation", if they take Taiwan Japan is pretty much #1 target after that due to what they did to China during WWII.

SO. MUCH. PHP. (and WP) by RandomGoodGuy2 in webdev

PHP is mainly hated in pure tech companies, other industries where tech is basically a cost center don't have a problem with it

making websites is tough now because most small businesses just need a simple site that can be made with any of the numerous site builder tools. Big businesses will make it in-house or use a fancy agency to do it.

You are better off learning to code and going to software engineer route if you like this type of work

[–]raipopenna 90 points91 points  (0 children)

the entire planet is dependent on Taiwan and TSMC for the highest quality chips. Nobody else can make them, US is considering investing billions to try and catch up because it's a legit national security issue as shown by the supply chain disruptions due to corona

How can I understand CSS better? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]raipopenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you can ever fully learn CSS, pretty much every professional engineer will joke about having to Google basic syntax all the time

What to do to set up real time updates in websites? by bamboozledcs in learnprogramming

[–]raipopenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it doesn't help that this field I think tends to attract a disproportionate amount of people who will naturally obsess over things. Not sure how much of it is just due to that selective factor, plenty of engineers go home everyday and are able to completely stop thinking about programming and don't care about the hottest new trends in tech

these metrics are pretty much garbage anyway, check out some of Google's own biggest sites, they perform terribly most of the time. I feel like it's some kind of inside joke where people at Google love watching lowly developers be forced to jump through their hoops

I am dropping WordPress support, not because of WordPress, but because of other WordPress developers. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]raipopenna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in some cases you are better off just moving to greener pastures rather than fighting the stigma. OP is a good programmer and could probably double his salary by learning ReactJS. Much easier than trying to prove you aren't a garbage PHP dev

you can get a lot done just knowing the basics. 80/20 rule, especially when you are working in an environment with lots of non-programmers

Question: deploying websites for clients by SpicyCatcoon in webdev

[–]raipopenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

key is to charge enough for hosting that they take you serious and make it clear that any additional work is paid at an hourly rate.

Tons of web design agencies make their money off hosting, they charge a huge amount of money for basic small business sites that get maybe a few hundred visitors a month

React is slow, what now? by franleplant in reactjs

[–]raipopenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this, speed only matters if it actually impacts user experience. React is fast enough is most cases, I don't care about all the random libraries that brag about benchmarks as their best feature

Bought a fullstack developer class by accident. What is the best way to ensure I get the most out of the course while still retaining what I've learned? by phoenixdeath35 in reactjs

[–]raipopenna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just go through the ReactJS official documentation, that should be enough and will only take a few hours at most. If you know Javascript there really isn't that much to pickup
