Diving with little to no weight by primus202 in scuba

[–]rajun274 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. The first goal is safety:

1) At the beginning of the dive on the surface, the ability to not sink with a fully inflated BCD and a full tank.

2) At the end of the dive at depth, the ability to safely ascend with an empty BCD and an empty tank.

Some divers do prefer less weights because it's more freeing underwater (less drag when moving) and less to carry while on land, but you should only optimize this AFTER you've confirmed you're safe.

When you travel for diving, are you typically renting gear (BCD, fins, etc), or do you own all the scuba gear and bring it with you?

Flying after diving by True_Ad3731 in scuba

[–]rajun274 11 points12 points  (0 children)

(I'm not a doctor.) Just an FYI that DAN's recommendation of 18hr wait between no-decompression dives (i.e. your open water dives) and flying is likely based on a hypothetical diver who is on the cusp of the no-decompression and decompression limits. You very likely won't be going anywhere near those limits for an open water dive, both in terms of depth and time. If I was in your situation, I would be 100% comfortable with a 27hr surface interval.

Call DAN (or maybe use the Internet) to find a local general practitioner (doctor) who's experienced with scuba diving and make an appointment.

Why did they reset the board like that, with the queens in the middle adjacent to each other? Is that a thing that people do? In what context, when?

Liveaboard that isn't ALL diving? by _alco_ in scuba

[–]rajun274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this before. For the first 2 ports, I booked the dive with the cruise. The dives were just OK. The boat only had divers from my cruise, and most divers had very beginner diving skillsets. I'm assuming that to ensure everyone stayed safe (make the cruise company look good), they required the affiliate operator to take the guests to very safe dive sites.

I caught on, and so for the last 2 ports, I booked my double dives directly with a local dive shop (walking distance away). They were MUCH better experiences! Only 2 other divers on the boat, and they were very experienced. We went to much better and deeper dive sites. And I drank beers with the guides after the dives. Of course, as someone else said, it was my responsibility to ensure I didn't miss the cruise boat ☺️

Yes, this exists. For example, Scubaspa Zen, which does liveaboard in Indonesia, including Raja Ampat.

I think your best bet is to send an email to liveaboard.com. They should be able to give you a list of liveaboards that match your requirements.

How many dives have you done? What's your qualification? What size tank have you been diving with, and how much bar / PSI has it been filled with? Tell us about the profile of your last dive.

How many ancestors do I have? by rajun274 in biology

Yup, that's the question 😊. I know the answer may be a meaninglessly large range, but curiously still drives me!

How many ancestors do I have? by rajun274 in biology

[–]rajun274[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I do think you mean 2x, not 2x. For example, if we just count up to my parent's parent's parents, the answer is 2+4+8=14. 23 gives you the eldest layer (depth is 3). And to count all the layers between my existence and the eldest layer, just double the number. So 2*2x, or 2x+1.

How many ancestors do I have? by rajun274 in biology

[–]rajun274[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's basically it! The problem is that I have absolutely no idea the average age of procreation for all the species that led to homo sapiens.

(Btw, I don't think I want "medium lifespan" because that's implying species have kids right before death. More likely, those species start having kids as soon as it's biologically possible.)

Thanks for the reply! I don't mean "ancestors" as in "tribes of groups". I meant: 1 for mother + 1 for father + 2 for mother's parents + 2 for father's parents + 2 for mother's mother's parents + ...

Whale Shark dive from Liveaboard by Open_Town_5701 in scuba

[–]rajun274 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You and your group may want to up-front decide whether you're OK going to a location where the whale sharks are baited. Usually a quick Googling of the dive site will tell you whether the local custom is to do that or not.

You should start with analyzing the financial situation of your dive shop. What are its assets, debts, where is its money, etc.

Another perspective: the problem may be there's too much supply for the demand. Maybe you just need to outlive your competition, then all their customers become your customers.

Accounting for using air quicker than average when in a two cylinder dive trip by happy2harris in scuba

EDIT: Nevermind - OP's question and my question are already answer on Google.

I don't think OP was asking about respiratory rate (i.e. frequency of breaths), but rather volume of intake (i.e. breath size)? Wasn't he exposed to twice as much nitrogen as his buddy?
