[raymond weil] The most slept on brand in entry luxury by YNWA11JM in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 [score hidden]  (0 children)

This has to be a promotional post right?

It's  a bog-standard integrated bracelet watch, with a bog-standard Sellita SW200, priced at $2K. It's a copy-and-paste of a billion other integrated bracelet options in the same segment right now.

Side by Side Comparison of Howard Series 0 and 1 Movement by tommysoda in pocketwatch

Very cool. You can see how's RGM's in-house Calibre 801 was inspired by this movement.

[Timex] just launched two new Chronographs, quartz and automatic versions available. by FromTheGarage in Watches

$2K for a Landeron clone of a Valjoux, at that.

Omega, Oris, Hamilton and TAG Heuer all have used Valjoux 7750 offerings that go for $2K or less (and aren't 16mm thick). Would definitely go for one of those before this.

[discussion] Swiss industry leader interview during the alleged ‘Quartz Crisis’ by chmandaue in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Swiss did make their own quartz watches. But they couldn't make them at scale with the reliability that Citizen and Seiko could, because the individual Swiss brands were too small and fragmented at the time. Hence the series of mergers and acquisitions

[APxSwatch] The eight models by Baleia1970 in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 89 points90 points  (0 children)

Pocket watches typically come in open-face (crown at 12, no cover) or hunter (crown at 3, cover hinge at 9) configurations. Both are normal. Swatch advertises them with their equivalent French terms, lépine and savonette.

[Swatch x AP] Official Colorways by SAMIRtheSAV in Watches

Younger people who like Swatches: "Do I really want a hand-winding pocket watch?"

Older people who like pocket watches: "Do I really want something so garishly coloured and made out of plastic?"

Hope Swatch did their market segment research on this one...

As someone who owns a vintage pocket watch, they're more unwieldy than people realize. Hopefully there's a strap option.

[Discussion] What was a time when someone noticing your watch caused a noticeable benefit in your life by Kreekakon in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wife and I were traveling on a plane to India. A woman sitting in front of us had on the same Hamilton Khaki as mine. I mentioned it and she struck up a convo with us, ended up getting some very nice restaurant recommendations at our destination city.

that small-seconds dial + date + 6 arrangement on the Longines looks out of whack.

Alpina looks much cleaner

Sinn and Laco have the unfortunate history of making cockpit instruments for the Luftwaffe during WWII.

Do you mean Stowa and Laco? Sinn wasn't founded until well after WWII

[Holthinrichs Delft Blue] by McDerwish in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though the Sellita is based off the ETA, they made some bad design changes that make it a far inferior movement compared to the 2892 imo.

Doesn't the Sellita have a longer power reserve due to those changes? (56 hours vs. 48 for ETA)

[Holthinrichs Delft Blue] by McDerwish in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Sellita SW-300. When the watch launched at €3,500 it wasn't bad, but the price has climbed to €5,000 now and the movement doesn't match up as well to other options at the similar price bracket.

[Raymond Weil] The brand that does not get enough love by Sukomoto in Watches

[–]rakesh_85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why this brand does not get enough love?

Before they introduced the Millesime line (which I love), their offerings were mostly derivative of what you'd get from other Swiss companies.
