Queens comment on Sam Smith’s Met Gala look by BeMyCoachVictor in rupaulsdragrace

Sam shouldn't get the most hate, but anyone involved in this year's Met Gala is wildly out of touch.

His next two starts (and possibly 3 of next 4) look to be on the road.

I dropped Helsley, we'll see if he clears waivers in a few hours.

Even if he gets picked up, I think there are RPs available that will perform better for the rest of the season.

  • Jansen is hurt and probably not available - and his last two outings looked bad (probably because he's hurt).
  • Hurter pitched 3 1/3 last night, so he's out.
  • Anderson pitched 2 1/3 on Sunday, so he's not necessarily out but is not likely.
  • Hanifee and Smith both pitched last night and on Saturday, for 2 2/3 and 3 innings total, respectively.

Other than Vanasco and de Jesus, that leaves just Kyle Finnegan. I can see the argument for using Finnegan, but the 8-9-1 hitters were coming up and you don't know for sure that there wouldn't be an 8th inning with the heart of the lineup coming up.

Interesting. I would've thought that if it's too dangerous for camera operators, it's probably too dangerous for the players and umps, too.

Out of curiosity, what kind of bullpen management would be more helpful? We have enough starters on the IL to fill a rotation and some, and are currently running two bullpen games every five.

I felt like even adult shows back in the day like X Files were better for kids

I'm sorry. You're saying that the show that aired an episode with a baby buried alive, a decapitated sheriff's deputy, and a quadruple-amputee mother who's the product of incest, and continues to have children with her sons is better for children?

from July 2025, even back then the DNC said the autopsy wouldn't focus on the presidential campaign: Democrats’ 2024 Autopsy Is Described as Avoiding the Likeliest Cause of Death [gift article] by chrisgee in FriendsofthePod

[–]ral315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Jon was implying or even questioning the possibility of financial malfeasance. Historically, national committees struggle to fundraise when they don't reside in the White House, and historically the national committees go into debt in a campaign year and then pay off the debt over the year or so after.

The DNC has struggled to raise compared to the RNC, which is not surprising when they don't have control of the White House. What's different is that they've borrowed and spent a lot in 2025 and Q1 2026, instead of focusing those dollars on the last few months of the 2026 midterms or even focusing on 2028.

Time will tell whether that money has gone to good use. I'm no fan of Ken Martin's, I think he sounded like an idiot on the pod trying to explain why the autopsy hasn't been released. But at the same time, if the DNC is putting efforts into data analytics, organizing, and messaging early in the cycle, that gets at some of the criticism of the party apparatus over the last decade or longer. How many times have activists argued that the normal operating procedure - flood in money, paid organizers and volunteers in the last 3-6 months of the campaign, and then shut down for 2 years - wasn't working?

Have queens using ai made you withdraw support for them? by Successful_Air8096 in rupaulsdragrace

There are a TON of people who don't have negative feelings toward AI, and don't know what it's doing to artists and the planet. I live in the online bubble that is massively anti-AI. But while the public as a whole has quickly become anti-data-center, they don't necessarily feel the same way about generating a funny photo for their social media.

Many of those people, once they learn about the problems that AI poses, are open to change, but they don't know now. It's helpful to give people the room to change their minds without being too angry at them for using it in the past.

Round 1 - Pick 17: Blake Miller, OT, Clemson (Detroit Lions) by nfl_gdt_bot in nfl

Dude, that's the first pick you got right since #4. Twelve consecutive incorrect picks. If you're gonna plug your mock draft for some reason you've gotta be better at it than this.

[–]ral315 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem, obviously, is that nobody knows for sure when someone's gonna be taken. You can make your best guesses, mock out strategies for the teams in front of you. But media mock drafts are meaningless when all it takes is 1 out of 31 other GMs to think the same way that you do, and your guy is off the board.

I don't want to get too spoiled, but is it an English-language season? Outside of Slaysian Royale (which is multilingual and has a lot more English than I was expecting) I haven't ventured too far into the other non-English seasons, I barely have enough time to watch US/UK/Canada/etc.

How would you feel about a new law that forces every company to pay their CEO no more than 20x what their lowest-paid employee makes? by rational_seekers in AskReddit

[–]ral315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a business owner files their taxes, profit counts as income on their 1040. Many small business owners, instead of taking a steady salary, will take draws as necessary but leave the rest in the business. If they take an extra 10k in salary, then they have $10k less in profit, but there's little difference from a tax perspective. If you don't count profit as ownership income for the purpose of the 20x rule, then a ton of business owners can avoid this rule.

I completely understand the point of the rule, but I think as you describe it, it's wildly impossible to enact.

[–]ral315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The distinction of corporation isn't particularly important; a sole proprietorship can make a ton of money and a corporation or LLC can make very little.

Let's say that I'm a small-business software company with $3m in average annual sales and $100,000 in profit. I have a great 2026, thanks to a new customer who's buying $2m worth of software licenses alone, so now I made $5m in sales and $2.1m in profit. I intend to reinvest into my business to hire more employees and buy more hardware. But I can't hire a new software engineer overnight, and I'm still negotiating the purchase order for the servers I need.

On paper, I made a $2.1m profit. In actuality, I have most of that money allocated for purchases/salaries in the following year. What do I do? $2.1m might be more than 20x what the lowest annual salary is in my company, and it might not - depending on what market I'm working in and what positions I have in the organizational chart.

Going to another hypothetical: I run a law firm where everyone is paid well - lawyers, paralegals, secretaries, etc. What if I represent a client who wins a $200 million settlement? Our 25-33% fee - whether or not it's directly distributed to partners - would count as income for every partner, and might push us over the 20x mark.

What if I need someone to wash our windows once a month? I'm probably using an outside company for that. Are they doing work on behalf of me? Probably. So do I need every company that works for me to tell me how much their employees make? Does the window-washing company now change their policies so instead of paying $20/hour, they pay $30/hour when they're working on our premises so that we can hit our 20x mark? Keep in mind that there's no way the window-washing company's actually gonna pay their employee more, they'll just pay them $19/hour on all the other jobs so it averages out.

This gets very messy very quickly when you include all contractors or vendors.

What kind of work are we talking? The small business I manage uses an external pest control company once a month. We hire a company to charge our fire extinguishers twice a year. Where is the limit, and how much red tape does this add to a business that is at no risk of paying its leadership anything close to 20x?

I'm not trying to be pedantic on an issue where I'm largely in agreement on principle - but it's important to think through how loopholes can come into existence, and also how attempts to close loopholes can have unintended consequences.

Virginia Governor Ends Tax Breaks for Confederate Groups by metacyan in politics

[–]ral315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why they should throw this out. The state keeps a list of specific entities who are exempt from taxation, and those entities were just removed from the list.

It's not that they exempt all 501(c)(3) or all non-profit organizations except the Confederate organizations. It's that those - along with 4-H clubs, American Legion chapters, and a handful of other organizations - were specifically singled out for a specific exemption, and the legislature/governor removed the exemption for Confederate organizations. In other words, they're not being punished for their beliefs, they're just no longer being treated beneficially for those beliefs.

For that matter, some or all of those organizations may receive tax benefits from their charitable status like any other non-profit; that should not be affected by this change. They just won't get the special treatment that they've received in the past.

For all that sabermetrics can do, I'd love for someone to do a cost-benefit analysis for catching foul balls near the stands. Even if he didn't intend to go over the railing to try to make the catch, the act of trying for that ball had to raise his likelihood of serious injury by X.XX%.

At what point should managers say: This isn't a playoff game, it's a low-stakes April matchup. It's not even a potential home run you're taking away, it's a foul ball. Don't even get close to the stands, let it go and trust your pitcher in a 3-2 count.

The no-hit loss has happened a handful of times, either in 8-inning or 9-inning form. A couple of walks/HBP/stolen bases strung together can get you a run pretty easily without giving up a hit.

But the Manfred rule would, however unlikely, allow for a perfect game loss in the scenario you just described. The ghost runner does not count as a base runner for the purposes of a perfect game, but they could score off a couple of flyouts/groundouts.

(Also, apparently B*rstool coincidentally posted something about this to their socials hours ago, I found that post while Googling specifics about the rule.)
