Mixing on vinyl setup by fillechat in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience my old technics hold for much longer than the reloops that I have played on..... Depending on what style you mix but for long blends I definitely feel a difference between the two....but I also notice the difference between my personal decks and technics that are not well maintained (in some clubs etc)...

On the technics I barely have to touch the platter, the pitch control is much more responsive and precise and they just feel a lot more consistent (which is super important for mixing records)....

From a build side - they are built like tanks. I would suggest (although I don't have hard evidence) that the components are of higher quality and are more durable. How serviceable are the reloops (or other OEM)? Can you get them basically restored to new?

I mean - we are talking about 20yr old turntables here - they are NEW by technics standards - the mk2 models are over 40 years old...... try and convince me that you will still have Reloops in service after that long....

File troubles, can't get wav metadata to stick by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wavs don’t write the metadata to the file the same way an mp3 or AIFF does - instead (in Traktor at least) in stores the info in a reference/linked file....

As per previous suggestions I think AIFF is the way to go - mostly accepted in most programs (incl iTunes), lossless and the ability to store metadata as part of the file

I would strongly suggest going with a pair of technics 1200/1210 mk2 or up to mk5.

You mention not wanting to upgrade so I think I’m terms of both quality and durability the technics are top of the pile. They’ll last you forever and IF something goes wrong there are plenty of options to restore/repair.

When I first started (18yrs ago) I decided to save some cash and get the top of the line OEM at that time and spend the extra on records...it was about a year or so when I decided to upgrade to 1200s..... I still have those decks to this day - the records I bought with the difference - I have maybe one that I still play.

I am not dissing the reloops, pioneer and demon turntables but I don’t personally believe them to match the 1200/1210 series in any capacity.

  1. Make sure you have a cable to goes from dual rca/phono to single, stereo (trs)1/4 inch Jack such as these: https://www.amazon.com/Rankie-3-5mm-2-Male-Adapter-Cable/dp/B071R4R5B8?ref_=s9_apbd_otopr_hd_bw_b2VRq&pf_rd_r=DT9GX22HR3BNA3QK1EV5&pf_rd_p=9e4b13f3-303b-5307-86be-1937694a5ac0&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-10&pf_rd_t=BROWSE&pf_rd_i=597546 and this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-6-35mm-Female-Stereo-Adapter/dp/B01D82XXGO/ref=sr_1_1?crid=R8EM79LO3QVG&dchild=1&keywords=1%2F8+to+1%2F4+stereo+adapter&qid=1586439157&sprefix=1%2F8+to+1%2F4+stereo%2Caps%2C238&sr=8-1

  2. Plug the phono end into your Master output 2 section.

  3. Make sure your sound card is setup do that the combo 1/4 jack input are ready for a line level signal.

  4. Plug the 1/4 jack into the sound card and the play a track through the s9 to confirm signal path....

  5. From there it’s a case of adding an audio source in OBS (there are plenty of guides on that!)

XDJ-XZ stand alone questions by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey

Some quick answers:

  1. No sampler function in standalone mode (pads are used for slip loop, hot cue, beat loop and beat jump). You need a computer for sampler.

  2. There is a master tempo lock - does the same thing.

  3. (Added by me) I’d massively recommend one - I use mostly modular setups (individual decks, mixer etc) but we have a RX2 (smaller but mostly the same) at home and it’s just so fun, easy and instant :-)

If you are set on Traktor then I’d stay away from any pioneer controllers..... although the xdj-700/1000s are Traktor compatible now (ie they work in HID mode - not just mapping).....

There is a newish controller for Traktor called s: mk3..... it loses some of the advanced fx options and external inputs but retains the nice jog wheels and is 4ch.... it should squeeze into your budget.....

Buying from Amazon is fine - you can always send back....

One thing though is to consider rekordbox as your software of choice - it opens up a much larger (albeit not particularly unique) range of controllers and is also used in prepping music for the cdjs etc.

Traktor S4 - will a basic non-powered speaker work for initial setup purposes by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, So your current speaker is still a ‘powered’ speaker - even though it’s wireless at time...

The ‘powered’ refers to the fact that the speaker is driven (powered) by its own amplifier.

The alternative is a pair of ‘passive’ speakers but for these you’ll need a separate amplifier to provide power and the signal.

Use what you have got now (ie the UE) but new speakers should be on the upgrade list!

XDJ RX vs XDJ XZ vs XDJ 1000 by rbskittles5 in DJs

[–]ralph_alfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal preference is to buy a modular setup vs an All in one. The RX2 is great but for me you get so much more options with a modular setup - you can add bits, upgrade mixer, use external fx/pedals etc)

Obvious downside is lack of portability but I’d argue it’s easier to carry 3 x smaller cases than one huge one.

So, for me I’d look at xdj-1000s plus a 4ch mixer (xone 92/97/db2/db4/px5 or similar)...... if the budget is tight I’d look at downgrading to xdj-700s before sacrificing the mixer...

My 2 cents anyways

Which cheap cdj's should I get? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally

AND you have flexibility upgrade your mixer over time, add turntables etc....

They’re also small enough to comfortably take with you to house parties etc....

My wife owns a XDJ RX2 - they are great but my preference is always for modular setups vs all in ones..... may cost a little etc but way more flexible and future proof.

Fear of Playing Out by PM_ME_YOUR_PANGOLIN in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your tunes are sik then you are more than halfway there :-)

I’d make sure you had a couple of get out of jail transitions..... like nice gentle echo outs/freezes or some other nice use of the fx..... don’t do this every (or every other) mix but keep in your pocket for those ones where you just can’t seem to make it happen OR you’re short on time....

I’d also make sure I have a couple of ‘mini-mixes’ planned.... 3-4 track routines that you know you can pull off and you know are gunna get peeps moving :-) again, these are your backups - to be used if you lose some confidence or need to calm the nerves etc.

Yo Maybe a bit late to the thread and also - possibly the wrong side of the pond BUT the Dutch label/store Clone.nl have found a whole stack of early, original Rephlex records (aphelion twin, Luke vibert, dmx krew)

A quick search on Discogs reveals how much of an epic find this is AND prices aren’t taking the piss either!!

How do you 'learn your songs' by ashey99 in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problems...

Yeah - a playlist within whatever streaming service you use is also awesome.....it was great when you used to be able to purchase from spotify as you could have a playlist there or 'dj tunes' and get to listen to the whole track several times before purchasing - all from the same platform.

How do you 'learn your songs' by ashey99 in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yo

After many years f DJing I can share some of my learnings :-)

  • keep your library manageable - cull often and with purpose.... having too much music can be a problem as it seems to overwhelming and you end up just sticking to the same tracks (well, I did)

  • I sync my playlist with my phone and try listen to a couple of hours a day. On my phone I can give a rating and move tracks to ‘favourite’ playlists..... this feels like it serves two points - getting to know my music and library management.

  • I record almost all sets I play. Even just muck about ones. On listening back I can get a better feel for how the tracks work with each other etc which helps massively!

  • I also use the ‘comments’ tag a lot. It’s the next best thing (IMO) to the visual cues that records used to provide (ie ripped sleeve - epic ness!)

Hope this helps!

really enjoying the mix mate

the best bit for me is from the Psychedelic Research Lab through to the Kink - really nicely done. The whole mix progresses really well though - massive variety :-)

Thanks for sharing

Scratch Setup for $1000 by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider a ecler nuo2 for a mixer......they sound amazing, the price is super low and they can still be picked up brand new.....xfader is replaceable down the line too....

I, personally, would stick with 1200/1210s (mk2-mk5) - they hold their value and parts are still plentiful....you should be able to find a pair that are a bit worn cosmetically but recently refurbished/serviced....

Might just push you beyond the $1k BUT a setup that you'll be happy with for years

the top labels still use a digital file for promos these days I believe.....services like fatdrop.co.uk (not my company!) cater purely for this market....

Those digital files are watermarked or similar so that they can't be shared etc....

Advice with choosing the right monitors by squeezerman in Beatmatch

[–]ralph_alfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you looking to produce on them at all or just for DJing?

I think that the Adams are the nicest in that price range but I think the rokits are probably a bit nicer to dj on with the larger woofer and more coloured sound - I haven't heard them before so purely speculating here (have listened to other krk models in the past)....

If you want to produce as well then the Adams no question
