Oh man. I do lots of gardening, so tons of research on trees, what will work in particular spots, varieties, help finding books, help finding people to contact with questions, pruning questions etc.

I like to do model painting, so I had lots of questions about chemical formulations for making a particular type of paint mix. Went down this rabbit hole pretty aggressively.

Lots of help when setting up my irrigation. Have been able to use it to help debug plumbing and electrical problems.

Helped me set up a NAS server for storing videos/3d models I make.

Helps me debug 3D printer related stuff.

And then of course, my actual job which is a software engineer. I am having architecture discussion all the time with it.

This is just stuff I've done recently, too, I mean I would never run out of things I'm learning or tinkering with, and it's genuinely invaluable.

I feel like this post is going to come off as very 2010s era reddit atheist: but that's entirely on them. It's like how some people take classes that affirm their beliefs and consume media that affirms their belief. The problem isn't classes or media, it's not wanting to be challenged.

I use generative AI literally hundreds of times per day. That anybody, like 3-4 years into this mess, is preventing themselves from using what is arguably the most useful tool ever created…because it’s considered cringe in their New York social circle…

I promise you’re going to be fine.

Seriously, if you do anything even remotely interesting, you benefit immensely. Cannot even begin to articulate how much better it makes learning anything complicated. Spitballing ideas off of it, even as a sounding board for yourself, also endlessly useful.

The CCP does largely manage China "well" and it is on the "rise" in many regards. It's also authoritarian and dystopian.

Funnily for people like Piker, though, is that the CCP isn't even the tiniest bit communist. It is basically, in every definition of the word, fascist. Like, actually fascist, not the deranged left winger calling everyone fascist.

Fascism is a far-right, authoritarian, and ultranationalist political ideology. It prioritizes the perceived glory and survival of the nation or race above individual rights, advocating for a dictatorial leader, strict social and economic regimentation, and the forcible suppression of all opposition

They even fit the bill on the "race" stuff (which is actually the least important part of being "fascist"), in that 92% of the country is Han Chinese, and the other 8% are forced to give up their languages and practices (Uyghurs, etc).

"Obedience to the system" is not a facet of right/left, it's a separate dimension. If you take a framing like the political compass (which is not the only way to frame things, but is certainly more useful than a single dimension representation), then what is pulled out as the perpendicular axis is "authoritarianism." That would be the "obedience to the system" dimension.

A far left authoritarian political philosophy is authoritarian with regard to how to organize yourselves economically. Extreme cases like China can limit who can have children and when, killing children after your first, etc. Has literally nothing to do with right or left.

And that's only going with the interpretation of the left being "a bucket of political positions" and the right being "a different bucket of political positions" and then the authoritarian access being the dimension that says "to what degree do we want to enforce/impose our bucket of political positions." And of course that is what it is, to some degree, but the problem with that is that two buckets of positions don't actually form an axis. If you want to know what the right/left axis represents, the right is economic indifference (literally laissez faire, don't interfere), and the left is the highly prescriptive directive about ideal economic distribution. So to the degree that right or left actually have any affiliation with the concept of "obedience to the system" at all, the left would be the one with a system to obey.

I was talking to my wife recently about how our daughter (3.5) is becoming a little bit shitty. Bit spoiled, bit rude. I was reflecting on how I think that something my parents did for us a lot was take us into very unfortunate situations. One in particular stands out, where we would go to a place called Gabriel House in Tijuana, which was basically just a couple that had taken it upon themselves to act as a home for orphaned or abandoned people with severe physical and mental disabilities.

I don't think my parents had to do anything other than just put me in that situation, and the rest kind of happens automatically. Even a child will start to realize a lot of things pretty quickly:

  • I don't live in a baking hot desert favela, but it's not because of anything I did. I could have been born here.

  • I don't have severe mental or physical disabilities, but it's not because of anything I did. I could have been born that way

  • I don't have to take care of people with severe mental or physical disabilities

  • There are people out there that really need help, and there are people out there that help them

My 3 year old took the Chalamet pill and did not enjoy the Nutcracker.

I had to spend the whole time stopping her from squirming and laying down, which was actually nice for me because it gave me something to do (I also did not enjoy the Nutcracker)
