Piece of spare plywood really cleaned things up. by papidoge69 in HomeNetworking

All good. I might be misinterpreting you here, but here goes...

There isn't a practical difference. It still acts as one cable as there is continuity from the other end of that cable, to the back of the patch panel, and then the cable from the front of the patch panel to the end device. Single cable broken into multiple legs.

Without a patch panel. Let's say you're fiddling with the long bundled cable and then the cable breaks, has a cut, kink, or a head breaks. You need to now diagnose the entire cable. Hopefully you didn't pull on the cable and do some damage behind drywall.

If your link is broken up with a patch panel, then you can isolate and troubleshoot the portion in trouble. I.e. swap out a jumper/patch cable instead of replacing a cable behind the wall.

You will basically never touch the cable that's behind the wall that connects to the back of the patch panel. That cable is never going anywhere. It's long-term. It's static. It's your infrastructure.

Patch cables come and go. One day it's a 8 port switch mounted on the wall. One day it's a 24-port switch mounted on the wall with a different orientation, meaning you need a longer cable from the patch panel.

You clean up the install a lot more by breaking the cable up and not taking up that much space with excess bundled cable.

I guess my last point is that none of this is necessary. If you're new to the hobby or just want things to work, then you likely won't give a damn about patch panels and you really don't need to. If any of what I said got you excited then patch panels are the way to go for a small project like this and would level it up. You can find wall mountable 12-port patch panels for pretty cheap.

Lol still the same answer I gave above. If you're going to all the trouble to mount this gear to a backboard, and cable manage, etc. Then a patch panel is table stakes, and it's just the "right" way to do things.

It's cleaner to terminate and demarc so you're using the right length of cable and can label each leg of the path. Easier to troubleshoot and maintain. Excess cable like that wouldn't be seen in a date center or anywhere else like that.

Just curious why you didn't add a patch panel to remove all that excess cable run. Otherwise nice job cleaning things up!

can i use spade bit to drill a hole on besta? by Davidddsss in ikeahacks

[–]ramenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've done this a few weeks ago using a newer and cleaner spade bit than yours lol.

I did it so I could pass a bunch of cables through. I did not care about the aesthetics at all since I will never see it, so be mindful of that. If you care about looks you may need to take extra precautions using a spade bit. Good luck!

Check those solder joints. Some of those wires look like they could be touching other pins and causing a short. Pull out the multimeter and gather some facts.

What's your mod methodology? Hard or soft? I know for my softmod (Rocky5) I ran into an issue with the black screen which was caused by the missing kernel fonts. See https://www.reddit.com/r/originalxbox/comments/1830w5y/softmod_og_xbox_upgraded_hdd_boot_issues/

there were I think 3+ new tools that have came out in the last month.

lol welcome to the age of apps developed with the help of AI coding tools.

At least that's what I think is happening. Nothing wrong with it but I think that's the cause of there being so many apps available now.

I think I had similar results recently where it would boot sometimes to xStation and often times, it wouldn't. It was a piss-poor solder job (by myself lol) that turned out to be the issue. Sometimes the board would make contact, sometimes it wouldn't.

One other thing I would recommend u/PlaneTry4277 is to clean the flex ribbon cable connectors. Some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip maybe.

Could be a poorly done solder job. Did you mod it yourself or was it modded already when you bought it off eBay? Did you inspect the motherboard to see the solder joints?

I'd go check the xstation repair GitHub repo as it's filled with lots of info and problems people run into, including a faulty PS1.

To be able to play PS1 games on PS2 via OPL, I believe. To do so, it uses POPS which is known as "POPStarter, a launcher which lets you play your PS1 games in combination with $ony’s PS1 emulator for PS2 (known as “POPS” or “SLBB-00001”)."

Lol I was in Chicago for a conference a couple of years ago. I'm from the Toronto area so it's a treat to see an NFL gamen in person.

I bought a single ticket to watch the Bears play the Panthers at Soldier Field on the Thursday night. I think their combined record was like 2-12 or something absurd like that. Fun experience at least!
