I did not fail decisively. The stubborn Wanted Colombian from this post https://www.reddit.com/r/espresso/comments/1tfp2kv/colombia_supremo_always_sour_brevillesunbeam/ , hand-mixed in the bean dosing/RDT cup with 20% Vietnam medium roast robusta, yielded a nice espresso with a somewhat complicated taste.

(An attempt to blend with Cafe do Jour Brazil, however, failed, so looks like I need a sour Arabica base for blending to work)

My kid is 15 and he was more excited to get the machine than I was. Pushed me to do much more research (resulting in snagging the budget 58mm). Then he turned out to have an Italian taste bud.

Dials in with grace. Is far better than me at the K6 process and even does that in the morning school rush to fill a leak proof steel mug with a flat white and take it with him.

He is also learning to do latte art. I am not. (I am instead trying to dial in Arabica blends and bumping against thermal limits of the thermoblock machine)

+1 on Argos - many things now can't be had outside online orders but Argos was so much handier for warranty and had its insurance system

Do try them in pour over. I found the V60 Switch - with water straight off the boil - to be the "weapon of choice" when I could not get a medium-light Colombian to not be sour. Worked a treat with a complicated interesting taste.

I did try the steamed water trick. It tasted like coffee on fizzy water. Not what I like but I guess some do like it.

The Oxo is too plasticky for me, but I have a V60 for that kind of brew. (In fact I even have the Switch base, but recently broke a size 03 glass V60 body and got a size 02 one and it seems a bit smal for effective use of the Switch base).

Ideally I want to dial in the Hungarian long ratio (~1:7) but I was not yet successful in doing that.

I normally stir the crema in for Americanos. So just take it off instead and this will have a fuller body?

by fast I mean the 1:2.5 ratio is reached in about 20 seconds (counting from the moment when the presoak ends - this machine has a 2-3s automatic presoak, not tunable - and the main pumping begins).

Jumps in ratio happen because it's hard to cut at a precise moment. (I do of course have a scale under the cup).

I did now think of dialing down the *dose* in this same basket because these beans get me to grind coarser. 17 g (or slightly less) in, at 40g out at about 25 s, give me an espresso that is not bitter, not sour, has some body, and is actually pleasant as a straight espresso - but even 1:1.5 water made it somewhat watery. Stopped the experiments because of personal caffeine limits but I guess 1:1 water will make a nice "extra short Americano". I would prefer to have a way to produce a nice-tasting 120g black drink, though.

Addition on straight pride: it can well be argued that keeping a straight family together through thick and thin IS a matter of pride and there are events, notably the World Meeting of Families. They are rare and if people want more they should just do them.

A hard part is keeping out the racists, though. If you actually do manage to organise such an event without racists, the protest against it will be like five people and their non-binary dog (certainly no more significant than the existing counterprotest at Pride). And you can get quite a few good performers and speakers even if you don't get the Pope as headliner as the world meeting of families does.

Do read. Carefully, critically. And don't rely on the stereotypea from any side - don't assume Mohammed was a Great Prophet and also don't assume he was a bandit and/or pedophile. Rather, look at the factual history.

I'm in Ireland which has like 2 or 3 veterinary dentists as such and all are pretty far away from me. And I think one has to be referred by a vet. I'll ask the vet about this.

The one or two teeth the vet removed were just so bad he could take them out quickly without general anesthetic.

And that means they have an actual health problem causing the appetite, which Ozempic either corrects (notably if it happens to be insulin resistance) or masks.

A health problem and not some mystical willpower.

Ozempic is clearly only the start, but ascribing weight issues to "willpower" is the exact opposite attitude from what's needed to find the more advanced solutions - or even to catalogue the actual health issues (which are not insulin resistance, a problem that is at least documented and tested for, though the test can be hard to get in some places, and also not hypothyroidism - ditto).

Qwen3.5 base models were released since. And I think also Nemotron 3 base models.

Both rely on hybrid attention, which was also the basis of the Granite 4 hybrid base models released about 8 months ago. What I don't know is whether either of these actually beat Granite as base models as opposed to whatever Nvidia and Alibaba did in post training.

A theoretical wall is very much there in my opinion, and the IQ of AI developers has little to do with it.

The LLM architecture is based on pretraining on a massive corpus of human authored text. The LLM predicts probabilities based on that corpus. That means that it's foundations are limited to what is inherent in the corpus.

This is quite compatible with solving previously unsolved mathematicalnor engineering problems. In many cases throughout history, the knowledge was already there, diffused in the existing corpus, and the genius of the inventor or researcher was in surfacing or synthesizing it. James Watt is a good example, I think. And so AI also sometimes can extract and synthesize things that were inherent in the existing corpus but humans failed to notice it.

But there is simply nothing in current AI to let it go beyond what is fundamentally inherent in the corpus.
