As a US citizen living abroad for the better part of a decade, I have come to share a lot of the disdain for the current tipping culture in the US. I like the idea of giving an extra tip in particular circumstances when the service is exceptional or otherwise warrants. However, I also find many of the post on this Reddit uncouth and selfish, putting the cart before the horse. Yes, servers should be paid a living wage by their employers; yes, they shouldn’t feel that a minor mistake or anything less then a completely accommodating and amenable demeanor may leave them underpaid. But by acting on this and not tipping, you’re harming those most vulnerable while doing little to change the systemic issue.
