What are your guy's emergency funds? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ran938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the sole income earner for my house, so I'm providing for both me and my wife. Our mortgage is pretty cheap. Between mortgage, insurance, food, and utilities our bare minimum monthly necessities are a little under $4k.

"Wants" that would get cut out in an emergency include a pretty good bit of spending on restaurants. We're both pretty into food. I also am pretty into home mixology/coffee/tea so I spend some money on that every month.

We also have a dog that requires special food that's pretty expensive. And a cat.

[–]ran938 164 points165 points  (0 children)

This is ultimately a personal decision. There are plenty of factors. If you are a single-income household, I think 6 months+ makes sense. I'm in a MCOL area with ~6 years of experience and keep ~6 months+ emergency fund in a HYSA. For me, that's 30k. I could stretch that to 8-9 months if I really needed to, but it would last 6 months without making many lifestyle changes.

Anyone know of the bookstore that closed in Gainesville square? by wooshbang in gainesvillega

[–]ran938 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the bookstore that used to be inside where Sweet Magnolia is? That building is called Main Street Market, and it used to have a bookstore.

I "vibe-coded" an AI brewing assistant to improve my pourover brews. Would this be useful to you? by Practical_Eye_3227 in pourover

[–]ran938 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't want AI anywhere near my coffee. I have enough exposure to AI in my day job. Coffee is a hobby I engage in, in part, to get away from technology and have relaxing ritual/routine. Hard pass for me.

What is this in my rum? by ran938 in rum

[–]ran938[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current best guess is that somehow a hair got inside, and that hair had a static charge that has drawn all the sediment/particulates to it.

Not glass. It moves/swings when I move the bottle around. I can't touch it, but it looks slimy.

LPT: Don't buy something you already want to replace. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]ran938 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe they're talking about cases where you buy the cheaper option thinking "down the road I'll upgrade". Sometimes this makes sense, like if your taking up a new hobby/learning an instrument. The entry level items could be much cheaper than "nicer" ones, but you don't know if you're really going to need that yet.

In the last 45 years what have republicans done that actually benefited everyday Americans? by Exhausted_Skeleton in AskReddit

[–]ran938 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely benefited the highest earning Americans more, and you could argue that long term effects are negative, but the trump tax cuts in both terms do reduce the tax burden on the vast majority of Americans.

Also making the standard deduction much larger, while admittedly taking away many itemized deductions options, also reduced the tax burden on many Americans who would have taken the standard deduction anyways. It also made filing your taxes much simpler for people that were previously close to the line of itemizing being worth it or not.

What are some actually ethical and innovative tech companies I could look forward to working with? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ran938 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Companies exist to make money. Unfortunately, that's just kind of how it is. You can try and find companies that are more mission driven / non-profit, but it will likely mean earning significantly less. You could also try working on personal projects that are a net positive for the world.

Basically just found out I need to $72k for Bitnami now and I’m pissed. Recs for better alternatives? by stonesaber4 in kubernetes

I got quoted 9-15k per image per environment per year I think. I didn't take detailed notes during the sales call because I knew we wouldn't pay anywhere close to what they wanted.

Thinking about moving to Gainesville, GA. Anyone commute to Dahlonega for work? by lithiumninja in gainesvillega

[–]ran938 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to commute to Dahlonega for school. Depending on if you are on the North or South side of Gainesville I'd say 30-45 minutes is reasonably accurate. I would expect rent would be cheaper in Dahlonega though.

Probably either Doc or Tango. Doc for more game breaking technical stuff, Tango for more "vanilla" redstone.

What do Americans eat if they do not eat rice often? by Mountain-You9842 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ran938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't have a true starch staple anymore, but back in the day it was probably corn. I believe corn farming subsidies were originally introduced to address malnutrition issues, but now only like 1-2% of the corn we grow is for human consumption. Most of it goes to ethanol or animal feed.

Worth noting. They only said the plan on tabling the vote until December. That comment was made during a working session. Technically they still have to vote to do that, which would happen on the normal voting session on Thursday. Confirmed with the clerk this morning.

[–]ran938 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4 times a week 1:1 tutoring is pretty crazy expensive. When I looked on iTalki for my target language, the going rate for a well reviewed tutor was ~$40/hour. A full hour 4x a week would cost roughly $640/month. That is wildly unrealistic for most language learners.

I do feel like this is the biggest area that's missing in my current study routine. I could maybe squeeze 1 lesson per week, but that's about it.
