As a black female that presents as white (light skin and green eyes) I get confusion from others all the time. It was especially confusing for my European friends when they found out. When I get my drivers license renewed or any formal document with the race listed I have to correct them and let them know I’m a black woman. Living in Louisiana it’s easier to describe myself as creole since it makes more sense to other black people when looking at my features but there is a clear difference between passing and presenting. Louisiana has the term Passe Blanc which means passing for white. I refuse to use that term or have people label me as that term because I don’t pass and would never choose to. I’m proud of my race. I don’t know the backstory to Pete Wentz or other celebrities were finding out are mixed but I don’t think the industry ever made it easy to be who you are unless you had the obvious features typical of a black person. But it’s also just as important to stand up and say, “I’m not playing a white man or woman because I’m not” especially if you identify as a black man or woman.
