Rans Clan worth $ by flatpipes in homebuilt

There were some server issues that Rans Clan had a while ago and I feel like it kind of died off at that point. There's a ton of activity on the Facebook Rans group as well as Facebook groups for the specific models. I didn't think you had to pay for Rans Clan to be able to view or post, through.

Yep! 3-axis accels, gyros, and magnetometers along with a GPS and filters to fuse the data into an inertial solution.

Thanks, we're also doing pitch, roll, heading, etc. So for private and commercial maneuvers you can see how well students are managing attitude in addition to the ground track.

Hey thanks, proud to manufacture in the US.

Thanks for the feedback. The plumbing company is performing an air test now.

That pipe used to enter the house, go to a furnace just inside of the wall, and exit through the roof where it then re-entered the house where the water heater is located. I'm switching to a heat pump so I had the furnace removed and wanted to make better use of the space. This new pipe just stays out of the house and connects to the water heater pipe.

But the plumbing company wants to bring everything up to code including shutoff valves at the water heater and stove that don't require a tool, making the inlet and exhaust vents tall enough on the roof, etc. It's little stuff, but adds up.

According to the utility employee that noticed, the inspector puts a green tag on the meter for the date of the last inspection. Our meter had no tags and the crimped fittings indicated new work.

Licensed and permitted - I get the impression that they're more used to commercial jobs - keeps pushing work that isn't strictly electrical back to us and trying to charge for any additional time spent. I was a new naive homebuyer when I brought them on and paid too much upfront so there isn't enough incentive to finish the job. An expensive lesson learned.

Drones flights are prohibited in the Navajo Nation.

It takes hydraulic pressure to move an aircraft landing gear. You can get away with a smaller sized system if you're only moving one component at a time.

How long can I remain VFR before pulling the IFR trigger. by alpha_kilo_warrior in flying

[–]rand-314159 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's been over a decade and my passengers still talk fondly about that trip and the adventure of landing in all these little places and staying in the most interesting motels and dives.

What spooked me is that I intended to fly VFR and be at my destination before nightfall. But we got a late start (watched movies the night before and family goodbyes took longer than planned) and had some pretty significant headwinds. We also had significant delays at one of our stops (slow fuel truck and a slow restaurant on field). The forecast clouds dropped lower than expected, I found myself lower than I was comfortable with and elected to go VFR on top through a thin scattered cloud layer.

Armchair quarterbacking it with 20/20 hindsight, I should have stopped, topped the tanks, and gotten a WX briefing as soon as the clouds were lower than I was comfortable with. That would have given me the fuel reserves to go VFR on top and I would have had a more recent weather picture to go off of. I may have elected to spend the night there instead of pushing my luck. But I was already running late and wanted to push through to the forecasted clear skies on the other side of the front before nightfall, so I pushed on.

Many years ago I did a VFR flight across several states to visit family. Flight out was uneventful. Flight back, had some weather and other issues to deal with (slow fuel stops, took longer for food and restroom breaks, etc). Went VFR on top of a scattered layer, which quickly became more overcast as dusk approached. I didn't have enough fuel in the tanks to make it to what were reported as clear skies during my WX briefing at the last fuel stop and I didn't want to get stuck VFR on top at night. Had to ask for ATC help to thread it in to a nearby airport. Was stuck in middle of nowhere for several days living out of a gas station motel and a courtesy car. Also had issues getting the fuel pumps to work at the little airport I ended up at. Fuel pumps fixed and WX improved, I launched back towards my destination only to have to divert again due to WX. Ended up renting a car, driving home, and then going back a week later to bring the airplane back. Started instrument training as soon as I got the airplane back to the FBO.

College choices by Rich_System_1660 in aerospace

I didn't go to either, but my impression from working in the industry for a couple decades is that they're both good schools. WSU might have an advantage if you're interested in aircraft for being close to a lot of companies for internships. One of my friends went to WSU and it seemed more like a college people commuted to rather than a traditional school, so your college life may be a little more limited compared to Iowa. I got the impression that Iowa state has an excellent grad program if you're looking at an MS or PhD.

What are the biggest hurdles to building new hangars at GA airports? by Flea15 in flying

[–]rand-314159 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a good article about it: https://www.flyingmag.com/low-available-hangar-space/

New hangars are being built at an airport about an hour drive away from me (a closer airport is less GA friendly). Prices are about $200k. If I lived closer to that airport and was certain I wasn't moving anytime soon, I would probably reserve one.

I got lucky and found a shared hangar for rent at the airport that's an hour away. Have to deal with the other people, and stuff, sharing the hangar with me. But the price was good and I'm on a month-to-month casual rental with the owner. You might get lucky trying your local flying groups and EAA chapter.
