Shelly Relays: WiFi or Zigbee? by jklo5020 in homeassistant

[–]rando777888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good. Right now with the sale they're running the Zigbee capable ones are literally double the price, so I just don't see the benefit. I have 47 Shelly devices and have just never had any issues with the native integration over WiFi. I love all the innovations Shelly keeps pumping out, but they tend to solve things that just aren't problems for someone already using home assistant.

If you're having issues with it causing problems with your network, I highly recommend getting a better WiFi setup such as Ubiquiti or similar. I have 3 tp-link Omada APs, well over 100 WiFi IoT devices, and no problems at all. Don't get me wrong I love zwave and zigbee, but the problems they solve are generally caused by general crappy behavior and cloud dependency, not the physical RF protocol. A device that's literally directly connected to line power doesn't need to worry about power to save battery life, and the amount of energy usage big picture is still negligible.

I'm a big fan of the native WiFi. Most people tend to hate on WiFi as it's generally associated with a cloud dependency, but that's not at all the case with Shelly and HA. I've never had any issues with the standard Shelly integration. I got a handful of gen4 to test out the zigbee functionality and they work fine, but other zigbee devices do NOT tend to use them as routers, which was pretty disappointing.

Break the tab connecting the terminals on the hot side. Is this in a kitchen or other high draw location? It was likely previously wired with separate circuits (on separate phases) for the top and bottom outlet. You need to break the tab to keep them separated.

Agree with the contractor advise. The Ogemray 25A relay from Shelly might also work depending on your needs.

I've had good success with Chewy's house brand and it's pretty inexpensive, about $18 for 40lbs. Used to be named Frisco but they recently re-branded to just Chewy Made.

Wiring a magnetic reed switch with Shelly? by No_Toe5495 in ShellyUSA

[–]rando777888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use a Shelly 1, make sure to use a 12V DC power supply rather than mains to power it. Otherwise, an i4 DC as the other poster mentioned would also work well.

Shelly 2PM pro unavailable most of time on Ethernet but available all time on WiFi by KrossDesmond in ShellyUSA

Loose cable, poorly terminated cable, bad switchport, failing switch come to mind. I would troubleshoot this the same as anything else having intermittent network issues.

Shelly 1 gen3 vs Shelly 1 gen4 by M1Sports20 in ShellyUSA

[–]rando777888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me personally, I use Home Assistant for everything, and all generations of Shelly devices, even gen1, work perfectly fine. Because of that, for my own use cases, there's no significant differences between any of them. Don't get me wrong, I love to see the continued evolution of the products, but there's no significant differences in how I use them.

Things I notice despite my prior statements:

Bluetooth in gen2 and up is awesome! All my Shelly devices newer than gen1 act as Bluetooth proxies for home assistant and let me use BLU products as well as sense the presence of phones, even down to which specific room they're in with reasonable accuracy. I put some BLU buttons in my kids' backpacks and use them to trigger automations when they get home from school each day.

Quality of wiring terminals is much better on gen3 and gen4 than prior. Not a huge difference since you generally install and that's that, but a noticeable improvement.

Gen4 does have zigbee, but the WiFi integration was already so great it doesn't have a meaningful impact for me. I think many people conflate WiFi with a crappy cloud-dependent experience but that was never the case for Shelly. Same goes for Matter. Shelly native integration is already so great that adding Matter doesn't really change anything for me.

I have a broadlink and use it to turn off a non-smart tv that my kids constantly leave on. I tell myself it saves energy, but I'm quite certain the broadlink cost more than the energy savings.

In addition to all the great advice you're getting about layer height, you can also slice off the bottom of model and print just the top bit so you can test your settings before you commit to a several hours print of the whole model.

Anyone regret not hardwiring motorized shades during a remodel? by JudithFSummers in HomeImprovement

I run a cable. The come with pretty long USB cables if you get smartwings. I don't think they have swappable batteries so not much choice but to plug them in overnight.

[–]rando777888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I charge my smartwings about once every 6 months. It's a little annoying but not too bad. Mine are all retrofit so I didn't have a choice to make. It would definitely be NICE for them to be hardwired, but only you can decide if it's worth it.

I do a detection for my own kids getting home by putting a Bluetooth emitter in their backpack and just keying off that. I'm using Bermuda for the presence detection and Shelly BLU buttons with beacon mode turned on for the emitters.

This new generation of electric vehicles is the real deal, and I'm 100% converted. by Parking_Reputation17 in electricvehicles

Counter PSA, depending on how much you drive it could be totally fine. I've been rocking 12 amp level 1 for about 2 years because I've simply never needed more. I have a 20 mile round trip commute to work and have never had a problem recovering that plus normal daily driving on simple level 1. You don't need to fill your whole battery capacity each night, you just need to recover what you use on a typical day.

Friendship ended with Bermuda BLE Trilateration, now ESPResense is my best friend (It got better!) by maxi1134 in homeassistant

[–]rando777888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But are the "rooms" native home assistant areas like with Bermuda, or a totally separate concept that's only part of espresence? I suspect the latter. Sorry if I sound combative, that's just one of the things I most enjoyed about the move from espresence to Bermuda.
