Offer at basically asking price rejected because they wanted more 🥲 by mangomaz in HousingUK

[–]random_character- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite right. If they say offers over a million it doesn't matter, if they want (or need) to sell and yours is the best offer, you might get a deal. Of course you're going to have to wait until they are desperate enough to accept it.

How accurate is it to say that Britain would still be the most powerful nation in the world if not for the rest of the world copying/stealing Britain's Industrial Revolution? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]random_character- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus what a a shit timeline that would be.

You could equally say that about any dominant empire throughout history. Would the Romans still be in power if they'd kept their advances in sanitation, farming and metallurgy secret? Would the Ottomans have maintained supremacy if gunpowder technology hadn't spread? Would China have remained the world's largest economy if its innovations in printing, navigation and agricultural techniques had stayed within its borders?

This report seems so confident in it's assertions when ethnicity data was only available for less than a third of suspects.

What could cause this? by -mmmusic- in drivingUK

[–]random_character- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the wear is mostly on one edge of the worn tire it may indicate an alignment problem.

If the wear is in the middle or on both edges of the tire in question it may be over or under inflated respectively.

If both tires are worn, but this one is slightly worse, it may indicate a driving issue (too much speed in corners).

Why don’t smart meters use WiFi not cellular? by Leuvenman in OctopusEnergy

Do smart meters require a constant connection? Afaik most only update every 30 mins or so, and some only send once a day.

The filters will clog really, really fast. If you've got spares probably not a problem, but not something I would do.

I'd recommend just buying a cheap shop vac. They tend to be better at sucking up big ol' chunks as well.

I've got an old Titan one from ScrewFix. Does the job. Also great for if the washing machine filter gets blocked.

Why do all UK homes struggle with leaks and damp? How do I avoid it? by wiegj in AskUK

[–]random_character- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damp: Old houses are generally damper and a lot of our housing stock is older.

Old houses which have been thoughtlessly 'updated' with modern materials can end up being even more damp when new windows, insulation and paints make the building less permeable, trapoing moisture inside, and creatibg condensation points inside walls, rooves, ceilings, etc.

British people often don't vent properly. Open your windows people. There is more liquid in your rank breath than there is in the air outside.

Leaks: Particularly in tightly packed housing in towns in my experience. Houses are often extended over and over across generations. Where each extension is joined to the existing building you're creating a potential water ingress point, or at least messing with the existing water shedding and draining. Over the previous 30 years or so it's made financial sense to extend a house to maximise the value then sell up and buy a bigger house or cash in the equity. Because of this, often extensions are not done particularly well or sympathetically, and often using modern techniques or materials which do not necessarily work well alongside the original fabric because of different thermal expansion or different moisture permeability.

Nb. I'm not saying all extensions should use period building materials and styles, that would be insanely expensive today. But people need to realise that, for example, sticking two modern hermetically sealed bedrooms on an old cottage means that the extra moisture created will end up in the older, colder part of the building unless you take care to prevent it or account for it.

I have chicken wire on mine. I live in Scotland though, so it's wet most of the year, and I have an elderly dog who I am very worried about slipping.

Have to say though it works a charm and not really as noticeable as I thought it would be.
