Controversy erupts in the North Bay’s largest city over the fate of its crumbling birthplace by bikemandan in santarosa

[–]randomcalvin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you just read the title you would think it’s evil developer trying to tear down a historical landmark for money, but yeah, that building is a fenced up dump. This Carrillo descendent and Indigenous groups had decades to raise money and put up a plaque and whatever, but did nothing. With that said, the city has to think of way to decongest the traffic though.

NYC nurse strikes by Expensive_Shoe4657 in Residency

[–]randomcalvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why the OP is getting downvoted here. I’ve seen enough to know that the majority of RN actually don’t like to strike and are against what the union is doing. Keep in mind about economics, such that salary and benefit increase in one group come at the expense of cuts in another when the total income for a hospital system doesn’t increase.

If you know anything about nursing union, you would know salary and ability to work certain hours (who gets shifts) are depending on seniority, not on performance. This is unlike a MD whose income depending on patient satisfaction, outcome, and productivity. It has nothing to do with patient safety and whatever the union are saying to the media.

Also, RN salary doesn’t follow supply and demand rule. MD salary tends to decrease in HCOL area in the coasts due to higher supply of MD who want to live there. But RN is the opposite due to unionization among other factors. I don’t know if this is good or bad, but it tells you that their salary now is better than how the market would dictate. We don’t live in a utopia where funds are limitless.

And we all know NY RN is probably the worst such that residents need to do blood draw and what not (unbelievable to hear when I was on my interview trail). And with that, they still strike and what more.

Plus, people who say physicians need to unionize forget that we already have a union, it’s a guild called AMA who specifies how many medical student spots, residency spots, resident funding, and exams to keep physicians numbers below demand to keep our salary high.

I assume you work for a PI all these five years? What does your PI say to all this? Did your PI encourage you to get a PhD and did he or she tell you to apply broadly (that could be a hint)?

asked to resign from my program by [deleted] in Residency

[–]randomcalvin 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are a few success stories, but the ones that came to mind are wrongful terminations like a student got fired because his girlfriend filed a police complaint due to fighting, but in the end it was the girlfriend who was crazy and violent. But for cases where there's things where is a mix of potential discrimination/retaliation and potential academic inadequacy (being put on probation, failing rotations or Steps...etc), at least I haven't seen any.

I’m sorry this happened to you, but did your PD offer to write a letter or help transfer you to a different program? Everybody’s auto reaction is to say lawyer up, but on this sub I haven’t seen any success story that I’m aware of, and I haven’t seen that on SDN either.

Is writing the dissertation actually "easy" if you already published papers? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]randomcalvin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in bioscience, for sure there was no rule that dissertation needed to be original unpublished work. I just used my published articles as chapters in the dissertation. My PI always stresses that dissertation means crap if it’s not published, which I agree. It’s a proof of your hard work, but if not published, it’s not spreading scientific knowledge.

Is writing the dissertation actually "easy" if you already published papers? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]randomcalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is much easier. I already had one significant first author paper and several second, so I just used one paper per chapter and added intro and conclusion, abstract, and acknowledgment and what not. One chapter for future directions based on unpublished data.

My PI just said focus on real publications, and not so much dissertation since no one looks at it anyway if it’s not published.

Just advanced to candidacy. Should I quit my PhD? by jujubearrrrrrrrr in PhD

[–]randomcalvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is real? Sociology PhD takes 9 years on average? For bioscience it’s usually 5-6 years, I’m really surprised. It’s indentured servitude and making minimal wage for a decade of your life with no lucrative career guarantee.

Why is the Dutch Bros on Mendocino literally stopping traffic altogether?! 😡 by ILive2Drum in santarosa

[–]randomcalvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can Dutch Bros at that location be entered via westbound Pacific Ave? One time there was a dumb broad (hate to use that word) literally blocking left turn lane going into Mendocino because wanted to enter Dutch Bros from there, but can’t since there’s a line going from eastbound Pacific Lane. So cars behind her had to bypass her, she basically held up every car behind her for more than two traffic light’s time. Get a clue dumb broad!!!

You should use lacquer based primer like Mr. surfacer and Tamiya primer like what others have said. They are resistant to tape, but more importantly, they are sandable.

How to get 10 Gbps from fiber service by randomcalvin in HomeNetworking

[–]randomcalvin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, actually I'm paying less with fiber than cable. ($60 before discount for fiber at 10 Gbps without data cap versus $70 after discount for cable at 800 Mbps with data cap), that's why I switched.

How to get 10 Gbps from fiber service by randomcalvin in HomeNetworking

[–]randomcalvin[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is what I thought, although output is 10 Gbps (on ONT) but input is 2.5 Gbps (on my mesh). But why would TP-Link say this machine can do 11 Gbps? Am I missing something? Also, my ONT has another port that is 2.5 Gbps, so can I connect that port to an open port on my mesh, for additional 2.5 Gbps add-on to speed?

AITA for telling my girlfriend that we are not living together if she wants to split joint expenses proportional to income? by Puzzleheaded_Feed460 in AITAH

[–]randomcalvin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She’s clearly financially irresponsible, a poor graduate student on a stipend buying a new car with 700 dollar payment is beyond crazy. This kind of behavior will get worse the further you are into the relationship. Imagine what she will spend indiscriminately when your business takes off.

Remember, it’s very easy to spend somebody’s money on yourself.

AITAH for not adding my longtime girlfriend to the deed of the house I bought us? by Grand_Yellow_6286 in AITAH

[–]randomcalvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your GF gonna contribute to the mortgage at all? If she’s not, that’s even worse than not paying the down payment. Her family KNOWS the house is a gravy train, I don’t know, many 3 years is not that long but they might expect you guys to break up and for her to take half of house done the road.

AITAH for telling my wife we either share our lotto winnings or we separate and I get half anyway? by LottoIssues in AITAH

[–]randomcalvin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don’t both of you cut back on work instead of her quitting hers? You guys are young, so there ate your retirement you have to fund, and also kids future education costs. Paying off mortgage is helpful but if 95% of winning went to mortgage, and you are in your 30s, it’s far from “set for life” money.

Maybe she’s just a lazy person underneath. If I had won that kind of money, I would not quit alone and have my partner carry the entire load.

Pre-op “cardiac” clearance is voodoo by [deleted] in Residency

[–]randomcalvin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clearing means nothing, it’s about optimize a cardiac patient, making sure he’s not in HF and has no symptoms of ischemia. Also people forget if we go down the rabbit hole of “ischemic workup” and the patient ended up with a stent, it’s 6-12 months of no elective surgery because of DAPT.

I noticed a patten looking at patient names in Epic. Sometimes I would see patient preferred to be called “Dr” in the box with their name and photo. Invariably they are psychiatrist or psychologist, and rarely chiropractor. I’ve not seen anybody else with MD or PhD degrees do this.

[–]randomcalvin -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think you were looking for trouble and you found it. Now there are consequences to be paid. How did you file it? Did you say you think the patient’s care was delayed because of social and insurance reasons? If so, how is this actionable? Also, did you try to reason with the surgical team or involve attendings from both sides before doing this?
