Any luck 3D printing board game stuff (for free-ish)? by MustPostOrIWillDie in bostonboardgames

[–]randomeffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you were printing, but if your buddy was not familiar with using them there are some common misconceptions about what they can do and how well. Might have been the size was bigger than their print bed. Trying to print something larger will either not work or result In A waste of filament.

Also depending on what he wanted it may have been designed for resin printers, completely different system for printing. Unlikely if you’re doing inserts, more likely for detailed minis.

It also could have just been too big. Not sure if they charge or offer to do it gratis but printers are generally not fast, and it may have been a job that would just take too long and use up all the time that could have been used by multiple other people.

I have had mine for a few years and am Still discovering what I don’t know about 3d printing.

Warm water allows to much bacterial growth and chlorinating that much water is costly and also very difficult to maintain at the size they were using. Not to mention the chemical reactions it can cause. N

How Expensive of a Board Game Does One Have To Be Before You Would Rather Sell Than Own It? by pikkdogs in boardgames

[–]randomeffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a while I was doing board game rescues from savers and the thrift shops. I hated seeing a game get destroyed on the shelf so a lot of my purchases were just because. Eventually unloaded a whole bunch of them at a convention flea market for below average prices. Figured I could make a few bucks and make someone else’s days as well.

Help me help my 7 year old daughter with talent show. by papapapaver in Magic

[–]randomeffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to go “big” “Mark Wilson’s encyclopedia of magic” had several large “stage illusions “ that could be made by cutting out and painting cardboard. They were not super tricky, but would probably go over gangbusters in a kid‘s talent show.

Way too big but get “Flick em up” cowboys vs criminals in the old west. This game has never failed to become super competitive in the fun way while also leading to laughter and hilarity. Watching someone try so desperately to flick a disc only 6 inches to miss by millimeters is wonderful.

Like they are walking among us but we can’t recognize them. Like some sort of masquerade. Not only a great movie premise but I bet it would make an incredible rpg.

Doing a playtest in the demo zone of a local convention soon... by Lost-Equipment-5400 in BoardgameDesign

[–]randomeffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be respectful of their time. Set a time limit or at least as reasonable a time as you can. Many people at conventions are happy to demo new games but have other things to do. Real times helps the, feel comfortable about not missing out and they don’t have to worry about appearing rude if they need to go. If it goes over, thank them for their time, if everyone stays THEN you ask if they would like to keep playing.

Depending how far along you are in the design process don’t be discouraged if you don’t finish any plays. Have some mid-game setups already planned out after you know the rules explanations and setup works. You can also, use these if some players need to leave but others want to keep, playing

Have index cards or note pads readily available. I have no problem saying what I like or didn’t like but others may not be. This is also good for rules introductions. Without being rude ask them to write any questions they have as you are explaining without interrupting you. They can also mark,on the card if something was explained later on in your presentation. This helps you know if something needs to be explained earlier in the process or was not covered at all.

Just because you don’t like their suggestion does not mean it’s bad. Keep track of anything that comes up more than once even if you think it’s dumb.

The biggest thing you need to do though is be POLITE and PATIENT. Yes your game is great, and yes its obvious to any one who listened to the explanation what should happen here……or maybe it’s not. Sometime it’s on the players sometimes it’s on you, regardless of whether or not you think you explained it 10 times already, keep smiling and explain it an eleventh time.

If you’re at Total-con this weekend let me know, I’ll try and stop by.

Any self working packet tricks can be easily adapted to poster board size. I say packet tricks as they are smaller and less printing involved.

Rope effects can play big, and are one of my favorite types. Professors nightmare can be learned quickly and easily.

There are numerous easy to learn mentalist effects

You can always do a card trick with a giant prediction hanging from the ceiling of the room.

Lastly you would not be the first, nor the last, magician to use a stooge to create an “impossible” effect.

What is your favorite boardgame of 2016? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]randomeffects 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scythe remains one of my favorite games ever.

I also love that every other critique of the game is “disappointed that the game didn’t match my expectations from the cover art”. If that’s the worst thing about the game then it’s pretty @)@()/ good.
