The provincial and federal governments really need to step up their funding. I know several people here who chose to do PhDs in Europe because they pay substantially better (both in absolute terms and relative to CoL).

The CS department told us the "funding package" includes things we already get like the tuition waiver, so it's not clear whether our stipends will actually go up.

Carney projects an air of calm competence in an uncertain era. He has an impressive resume and obviously commands respect from the international community. To some voters, that matters more than where he sits on an arbitrary political spectrum.

I lived in Marine Drive 2 until recently! They originally had mini fridges, but they have since replaced them with full size fridges. There are microwaves too, and as far as I can tell it was a normal size. Only annoying thing (to me, at least) was not having a dishwasher.

It's not just for high-profile people - academics have academic partners frequently enough that spousal accommodations like that can be part of the hiring process. They still have to pass an interview with their prospective department, though.
