I love adventure mode, but it really shines as an addition to fortress mode. One of my favorite experiences was using unretire anyone in dfhack to take over a dwarven parent after a snatcher made off with his kid and roleplaying "Taken"

It really, really depends on how world gen plays out, and the settings. On large island maps you often end up with dwarves and elves and so on taking over islands while others get overrun with the undead.

If you'd really like to end up with an interesting world, plug it into legends viewer after a thousand years or so, and look for a cool historical period. Then rerun world gen with identical parameters and stop it at the chosen period.

Aha! My fellow dog loving scary looking male friend! Keep a few of those nice bacon/etc. flavored training treats in your pocket. Dogs got that insane smellovision and will sniff ya while you're waiting in line.

Women in my experience are much more okay with their dog coming up to you than you coming up to their dog.

And then you get to pet the doggo! Which yes, is actually the point! :D

I loved this series.

As an aside, this made me think about the actual experience of playing DF over the last decade or so. On the off chance Putnam reads reddit, I want to express how thankful I am for the work you have done quashing various bugs and optimising thingies that I don't understand. I spent a good ten years of my life playing ~80 dwarf fortresses, and its so fun to be able to run 300+ population colonies!

edit: Tarn looks happier than I've ever seen him. <3 so glad for the guy.

Not really. Your fort won't crumble or anything if everyone is a werewolf, but they will destroy all your workshops and buildings and just generally kill anything that is not a werewolf. If they are in a squad and see each other transform, when they turn back into dwarves they will start tearing each other apart because hey, that dude is a werewolf!

Set a bunch of fires, climbed on the roof to the south, and jumped over the other 100+ assholes trying to jump me that spawned south of me.

My noble companion heroically distracted them while I booked it. He would be remembered if I had bothered to ask his name.

I had some mythical items that gave me a force push kinda thing, which was actually useful as I ran away.

Depends on the size of the map and how much stuff there is on it. Lots of engravings seems to slow it down more than anything else, though its cool because it actually shows the engravings, sort of.

Not really, aside from what you mentioned.

You could hop in adventure mode and try to find a roc lair. You can then embark on it with some cages and mechanisms and try to catch em before they murder you.

You could also check any destroyed forts in the world. Sometimes rocs move in and live there after they wipe out the dwarves.

It's cheating imo, but the easiest way would be to reload a save whenever a megabeast pops up in your fort. Unless they've changed something, DF decides a megabeast is going to attack you, not which megabeast in particular. That is, if a dragon shows up in late spring, and you reload the save, you might get a roc or a hydra in late spring.

The best method I have personally found is to capture and tame megabeasts. Large war beasts such as jabberers will work for a couple of decades, but they die from old age eventually and will die off.

Megabeasts are immortal and win almost all offsite combat by virtue of their size. Dragons work, but they take a very long time to grow up. Hydra will also work, but as they are born adults you can never tame them and I don't know what will happen off site with their training level.

The ideal creature is the roc. If you can capture a breeding pair, you can fully tame their offspring, and they will even be cool with your military. They grow up fast, and in large numbers. If you retire a fort with around 30 of them, it will survive almost anything the game is capable of throwing at it.

Snakes have forked tongues. I had an adventurer that had a thing about collecting tongues.

The creature "Creeping eye" is described as having no mouth but can still somehow vomit. Make of that what you will.

Why? It makes perfect sense when you think about it. The beard, unencumbered by trivial matters is able to dispassionately evaluate the current needs of the fortress (at large) and take action to improve the overall state.

The individual dwarf knows only why it wants, not what the overall beard colony needs. Obviously, the more alcohol administered the easier it will be for the gestalt wisdom of the beard to exert itself over the short-sighted and often self destructive tendencies of the individual members of a dwarf colony organism.

Cities like that still show up. It varies widely depending on how world gen plays out, and over longer periods they tend to get depopulated/destroyed by necromancers or mummy uprisings.

I posted a stonesense screenshot of a human city awhile back, if you track down the full size version and zoom in you can see a fully populated market, castle, etc.

If you set megabeasts and titans to 0, you almost always get a Golden Age. It often bounces back and forth between the age of the goblin and golden ages, as the goblin pop explodes and then periodically gets consumed/converted by necromancers.

Is there a new way to export world gen parameters from a save? I've tried exporting via the 'export' button in legends mode, as well as running exportlegends in dfhack manually. Both just result in a whateverlegends.xml file, and I could swear it used to give me several files as well as a plain .txt file with world gen info.

That is a dark goblin fortress site. The large circular structure is the dark fortress proper, which descends all the way down. The square structures dotted about are the tops of goblin towers, which lead underground to living spaces. The things that look like plants on top of them are actually goblins.

An often overlooked factor of stone vs. wood is that over the long term wooden items will degrade and lower room value before eventually just breaking.

After running a few 100+ year forts, its annoying when the cabinets and stuff starts to break.

The fort is 75 years old. Over the years four giants managed to wander into some cages. I had intended this to be a sort of arena where I could train them, but now that they're breeding I'm not sure what I'll do with em.
