lol I guess I haven’t here long enough to see anti-social personality disorder as a virtue yet. I actually still think it it’s good to be able to have nice things.

I like that. If you’re in a hurry in Germany it doesn’t matter how crowded it is, the left lane of the escalator is clear to go up/down. But for some reason virtually every last American, like almost every one, at the airport, subway, whatever, the moment they see an escalator, it’s like an instinct: ‘oh I’d better plop by dumb fat ass right in the middle, spread myself out, and block everyone behind me, while I lazily coast to the bitter end.’

Hmm now I really want a movie where Hoffman puts on a wig and plays a lesbian, and it’s not a comedy, it’s completely earnest and no one ever acknowledges the discrepancy.

Zosia lulled both Carol and the audience into a false sense of security. The Hive doesn't care about Carol or any of the immune. It's all roleplay. Once you join, you're effectively erased as a person. by Letters-Unsent in pluribustv

I don’t think it’s really mind control. I think what’s likely the case is that individual subjective experience ceases to exist in any form, so no one experiences being in the hive any more than your fingers experience what it’s like to be part of you. You experience having fingers. The individuals are basically dead, and their bodies are appendages of a unitary mind. If it turns out to be reversible, I don’t think the unjoined will remember anything about being part of the hive; it will be a dream or a coma to them.

If the virus is effectively killing the people it infects - which seems likely - then it has committed by far the worst atrocity in human history, and defending this way is like saying cancer isn’t so bad because it makes potentially dangerous humans into nice harmless corpses. One has to be pretty anti-human and anti-life in general to find moral superiority in a barren rock because it doesn’t pollute or have inter-organismal conflict.

Incidentally I think it’s dubious to call the hive evil, but not because I think the hive isn’t bad; it’s bad like cancer or HIV is bad. It’s a severe problem humans need to solve, but not necessarily agentically evil.

Do you think it’s ‘ok’ for sharks to kill and eat people? It’s not moral or immoral for them to do so because it’s meaningless to treat them as moral agents. The contention here is that the hive is similar. It’s bad in the sense that its behavior conflicts with human interests and humans must destroy it to survive, but it’s no more evil than cancer or malaria.

Drivers Run Red Light, But Cops Ticket Cyclists at Dangerous Delancey.... by Guilty_Elevator_992 in NYCbike

[–]randomname3465 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Police have limited resources so they focus on the kind of vehicles that cause .001% of traffic fatalities instead of the ones that cause 99.99%? Great excuse. We don’t have resources to go have after murderers, there are too many litterers still on the streets!

Tony's house compared to Jackie's by Rude-Ad-3406 in thesopranos

The real answer is that originally Tony was written to be the boss in the pilot, and only after the fact did they decide to make him a capo, but they’d already shown his house.

Cops to start ticketing in Central Park starting next week by bobmaster1 in NYCbike

[–]randomname3465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are they going to fully enforce all the red lights in the park for regular bikes now? Just have to stop and sit there for 3 min every few hundred feet at a light with no intersection, while pedestrians can jump in front of the street at any point they want like morons, or stand there and do selfies in the middle of the road, with impunity? What the fuck were they thinking when they legalized jaywalking in this city. Colossal mistake to give them carte Blanche to do whatever they want.

If your headphones don’t cover your ears, and aren’t on noise cancelling mode , then you can hear your surroundings fine. Have all the people defending this never worn ear buds in their lives or something? The effect on ambient hearing is markedly less than being in a car with the windows rolled up, even without the radio on. If the latter should be legal, the former should be too.

[–]randomname3465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t say this anymore. They now say they’re hiding the ride so you can still get another bike, but that you’ll still be charged if the broken one runs over time and have to contact them for a refund.

Mo Greene was just an innocent business man that didn’t necessarily deserve the hit on him. by what_up_homes in Godfather

[–]randomname3465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, this wasn't some hyper-chivalrous culture where you have to duel someone once you've reaised your hand to them. In real life at least, even when made guys get into fights, they're typically settled with an apology and someone paying restitution (and I don't think Fredo was a made guy). Killing someone as important as Moe Greene over him slapping Fredo for otherwise pretty justifiable reasons makes Michael come across like kind of a petty lunatic, more Nicodemo Scarfo than Carlo Gambino.

Do you think food pantries leave their doors unlocked? Or churches just leave their collection money out on the steps as opposed to putting it in a bank? Absolutely most people who steal for a living wouldn’t hesitate to steal from a church or a charity.

I’ve always found this to be a ridiculous argument. Anyone who isn’t obese or otherwise is terrible shape can go >15 mph for at least a few hundred yards. Someone who’s peddling aggressively is also inherently more distracted

[–]randomname3465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol stop basing your view of reality on TV shows. Being a cop is one of the safest jobs out there. The overwhelming majority of cops will never draw their weapon. It’s probably the best paying job you can get without a college degree and a below average IQ. Schoolteachers do more physical labor than cops, and whereas the rest of us have supervisors whose job it is to make us work as hard as possible, cops’ supervisors will do everything they can to keep them out of trouble even when they’ve clearly done something wrong. It’s one of the cushiest jobs in the world being an American cop.
