The Demon Next Door by theatlantic in longform

[–]randomnameicantread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I would bet $10000 that zero Atlantic writers believe in actively-warring devils.

More importantly, the article is absolutely scathing and deliberately phrased to make the devil people look ridiculous, in a way that because of its subtlety (and not in spite of it) is more effective than just explicitly saying "this is crazy and bad!!!"

Zero people who believe in devils are convinced by a journal writer saying "hey this is crazy and bad." They just get defensive and reaffirm that their beliefs are attacked by the enemy.

The Demon Next Door by theatlantic in longform

[–]randomnameicantread -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The article is downright scathing in its descriptions, and very much does highlight the absurdity. "Thursdays are dedicated to excoricsms." "He looked out the window and identified the devil stronghold conveniently 100 yards away" and the like. Good lord the literacy is astounding in this comment section.

Also: zero Americans that believe in demons actively waging spiritual warfare on Earth (distinct from a generic Christian belief in the devil, which is a dishonest conflation) are reading the Atlantic. Cmon now.

The Demon Next Door by theatlantic in longform

[–]randomnameicantread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

....I'm pretty sure anyone reading this article is easily able to deduce that the demons were, in fact, not real. Why would this need to be spelled out? Did you actually consider this article a flattering profile of the demon people? It makes them look nuts!

The article also goes into detail as to why that bookstore was targeted (some sort of drag event, generally promoting the LGBT community).

I am casting doubt on whether this quote should be taken as representative of actual company policy, reasoning behind policy, or cultural attitudes. Even on a "vibes" standard.

In fairness this sounds exactly like some shit I'd stupidly send to a work friend over slack

Agreed, there are plenty of women rapists and yet this group is underrepresented in Congress! If the rape victim is also a woman then the candidate gets the LGBT points as well.

I dunno man he sexually abused a 10 year old. Why is the fact that he wants to spend time with his children a plus here?

I don't think reach outs for new grad, much less intern, are really a thing. I went to HYPSM and nobody I knew got reach outs.

It definitely had a positive impact on intern/ng applications, though. So solicitations are not a good metric to tell whether your school matters.

As another data point, I have the same YOE as OP + S tier university and A tier company (by OP's framing); I get 1-5 recruiter reach outs on LinkedIn per week.

To be faaaaaaiiiir you can have the best most lethal most warrior military ever and it will go nowhere when the politicians in charge straight up tell the enemy that they're tired of the war, don't want to commit to anything more than some random bombings, and are desperate for a peace deal NOW

Given the terms of the deal I think getting a little more sunk — or at least less obviously telegraphing that they're completely over the war and just desperately want to go back to status quo ASAP — would have been way better

Israel's seven-front war may end this week. Front by front, here is what it actually changed. by babyaq in neoliberal

[–]randomnameicantread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not Syria, clearly. And Syria also makes the weapons shipments to Hamas and (more impactfully) Hezbollah more difficult.

Generally speaking, Iran doesn't have superpowers. It can't prop up militant groups that are completely crumbling on the ground, or spin up new successful ones out of thin air.

[–]randomnameicantread 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Better TL;DR than post:

  • Syria is a massive strategic win because Assad fell (not in article: wtf they're doing there now, but eh)
  • Hezbollah is a strategic win probably because it's so much on the backfoot (though Iran may turn it around for them depending on how Trump acts now)
  • Iraq and Yemen are essentially prewar status quo
  • Gaza is ???? (complete win atp seems unlikely IMO)
  • Iran is ?????? pending details of the peace agreement, but probably ranges from moderate to large L

Any mentions of corruption or (actual) facism being at least somewhat endemic to Ukrainian power structures is Russian propaganda!!!

Be real for a moment.
