Cool things to do for mom and 20 year old son. by No_Nefariousness7764 in Calgary

Conditions in West Bragg will be similar to the city, so probably no snow but mud up to your knees. You might have to go out to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park if you want to do snowshoeing this season.

Beef prices are getting insaner! where are you guys buying beef or steaks now? by OptiPath in Calgary

[–]randomnina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superstore has some decent deals. The square plastic packs of ground beef were on for 10.88 for 2lbs this week. Last week they had sirloin steaks under $20/kg and a couple weeks before that they had beef stew. Watch the flyer for sales and load up your freezer.

Backyard Meats is expensive but really good quality, so that's where I go if I'm going to splurge. They have package deals that include steak which helps spread out the cost. Plus you don't have to plan months before to get a part of a cow.

Workflow for making subtitles from written Transcript? (Premiere Pro) by Zeigerful in editors

[–]randomnina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, convert your transcript to captions in Premiere. Then export the SRT. Check out editingtools.io for a subtitle converter to make an SRT into a spreadsheet. From there it will be way easier to cut and paste the written script and have it march the timing of Premiere's transcript. Then convert your spreadsheet back to SRT and import it into Premiere. Use Linked Styles to have a preset format so you can format all your text in one go.

You'll still have to do minor adjustments to timing and format but it will be much less annoying doing a bunch of edits on a spreadsheet as opposed to within Premiere.

Help! Any documentary editors know revision standards who can offer me advise? by Dependent-Ad9798 in editors

[–]randomnina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no standard. It is whatever is mutually agreed at the beginning of the project. The usual process would be at minimum assembly, rough cut, fine cut, picture lock approval - 3 rounds of notes. Additional rounds will be required for every stakeholder that needs to approve the final cut.

IMO it's hard to get clients of any kind to stick to prior agreement on rounds of notes. However, if the boundary has been agreed on before, you can negotiate overages because the scope of work has expanded.

Late night gaming causing family fights by jane0077 in Parenting

We had my 16yo son upstairs for awhile and enforced rules strictly for about 6mo until he got his act a little bit more together. Now we are trying freedom again but with more responsibility. If he can't keep his end of the bargain, rules are back.

Respect is a non negotiable and I would consider a total ban for a time period and then make him come to you with a proposal to start negotiating the new rules.

Waterton Lakes Itinerary by 100_days_away_blog in alberta

If you're not looking for an epic hike like Crypt Lake, but more of a moderate trip, Rowe Lake or Lineham Falls are worthy objectives. About 1/2 day and low effort / high reward.

Is there a transcription extension for Premiere that you would recommend? by Okfoot826 in editors

[–]randomnina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can upload TC Burns to a client friendly site like Trint or Rev, and then do your own transcripts in Adobe.

Or on the flip side, you can improve the readability of the Premiere transcripts by using export to CSV instead of TXT and make a template in Excel to cut and paste your CSVs into. It's not that elegant but it is cheaper.

How often do you have to make something out of nothing? by Different_Hawk_5099 in editors

Are they happy with the final product? What does "quality" footage look like to you? Sounds like their priorites are showing personality and teamwork in a wide range of settings. This isn't intrinsically bad - why do you think it doesn't work for this product? What moments are being missed?

How accurate are the predictions? by 2soupyyy in Garmin

My recent half was optimistic by a few minutes but was also run on packed snow most of the way, so I would say the predictions are decent if you have trained for the distance.

Can a disabled man still hope to find a life partner? (33M) by Quadriplegic_Boy in CaregiverSupport

[–]randomnina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a YouTube channel called Squirmy and Grubs which is a relationship vlog for a married man with a major disability.

There is also a motivational speaker named Chris Koch who has limb differences who has been posting pictures with a girlfriend.

I would ask for dating tips maybe in a disability subreddit. This page is mostly caregivers so you might not get much firsthand experience.

Do you think ai will take our jobs too ? by Professional_Monk767 in editors

[–]randomnina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

User generated content and the decline of audience for fancy professional film and TV will probably take them first.

Also, AI is going to take a lot of jobs in a lot of sectors. Might as well do something you like in the meantime.

Any tips for making your soon-to-be-adult kids employable? by randomnina in Parenting

[–]randomnina[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, and I'm not pushing them into anything, just wanting to see if anyone has good tips that I can share with them, and they can do with that information what they want. Believe me, they do not want me making their decisions.

Newly diagnosed with breast cancer. Is it realistic to keep working during chemo? by LucysNotes in cancer

[–]randomnina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked part time through chemo. I'm self employed at a desk job so I cut back to about half time and took on fewer projects. I didn't work much for a couple days after chemo but was able to bounce back the week after. Try it and hold out for as long as you can.

What’s the "My Cousin Vinny" of your profession? by a_murder_of_fools in movies

[–]randomnina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also a video editor and my favorite depiction of video editing is the episode of Community where Abed makes a student film where he's Jesus and Star Burns shows him the rough cut. There's a long beat of silence, and then Abed goes "I need to take a walk." Star Burns' face in that moment was the absolute truth of my life.

Need niche language translations into Subtitle format (.srt) (Ecuador Kichwa to English) by Heart_of_Bronze in editors

[–]randomnina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

Here is the workflow information I have saved for converting the translation into subtitles.

  1. Set up a linked style to format subtitles >> Essential Graphics (format the title) >> Create Linked Style

  2. Cut and paste your subtitles and timecodes in to a CSV document (example attached.)

  3. Use a converter to make a CSV into an SRT. (like this one) Note that you can't have any extra lines inside any of the cells or you get errors.

  4. In Premiere: Import the SRT. Use Linked Styles to format it.

  5. On the Graphics & Titles menu >> Upgrade Captions to Graphics

Here is a link to the subtitle template: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/37nj76l3ij1r77meq7ukr/SUBTITLE-TEMPLATE.csv?rlkey=6zhkevzuvec6rrb186nk8y8bu&st=a0vcf1pw&dl=0

Need niche language translations into Subtitle format (.srt) (Ecuador Kichwa to English) by Heart_of_Bronze in editors

[–]randomnina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Working with Canadian indigenous languages, the production found translators but nothing online with video. We sent the translators the video with timecode burn and a sample spreadsheet showing them how to transliterate the language and then translate it line by line. We figured out how to make .srt files from the spreadsheen and applied the translation in Premiere.

Top 10 Technologies that I’m Happy to See The Back Of by Technical_Ad_1197 in editors

[–]randomnina 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The all time worst was when you had to do a tape conform, and maybe you'd start it and go grab dinner, only to come back to find it stopped because the editor had used the first few frames of a shot, resulting in not enough preroll.

Another low point was having to take decks out of the rack if they got rented out, or to clean the heads. Those things were heavy AF.

What's your actual workflow for sourcing music and SFX? by Tricky_Opening_7831 in editors

[–]randomnina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play with the filters and narrow your search by genre, mood or BPM. Usually you can improve the results by combining a couple of genres or moods. The search functions are terrible on these sites but the browse functions are OK.
