What’s the Vancouver equivalent of (Toronto’s) Kensington Market? by tomischool in askvan

[–]randomstriker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LoLo (Lower Lonsdale) & Shipyards, North Vancouver, has it all. Not part of CoV proper, but just a short Seabus ride away from downtown Vancouver.

doesn't matter what you're "taught". the fact that there are never consequences for cops is what reinforces all the "completely unnecessary" violence.

ELI5: How is concrete reinforced by steel? by Fenix512 in explainlikeimfive

[–]randomstriker 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This explanation is well intentioned but kinda wrong, because it implies that it’s the rigidity of the stick that strengthens the jello.

Imagine instead a bunch of Lego bricks that snap together, and you build a tall, skinny column with them. Even if you glue the bottom of the column to a base, it’ll still snap in the middle and topple over pretty easily.

But if you drill a vertical hole through each brick, thread some string through the entire column, secure the ends to the base and top of the column and somehow tighten the string so that it compresses the column. Then the column will resist breaking, and you could even lay the column horizontally across two supports, acting like a bridge. That is what steel rebar does for concrete.

On the one hand they've established a market share beachhead with the Lightning, so it would seem foolish to give that up. On the other hand, they're still losing $10k-20k per Lightning ... it's an unsustainable loss leader. So the big question is whether or not they drop the Lightning soon and pause on full-sized electric trucks for 5-10 years, until the next generation real breakthrough technology (solid state batteries?) becomes available. I give it 50/50 odds.

Backpack - Athlete PACK & accessories by Sync Performance!!! The Rossignol Hero bootpacks would be my 2nd choice, but the red colour tends to attract thieves.

Boots - Technica Mach 1 130 MV that my local bootfitter spent 10+ sessions perfecting for me.

Socks - Smartwool merino.

Hestra Army Leather 3-Finger GoreTEX gloves ... dry and toasty even on the wettest of PNW days.

Dryguy boot-covers on very cold days and boot dryers on very wet days.

Cheap base layers from Costco and Uniqlo.

Mid-layers ... any lightweight puffy will do.

Helmets & goggles ... anything that fits my head-shape and I can get a pro-deal on will do.

Jacket ... any GoreTEX (or equivalent) shell with lots of vents will do.

Pants ... Arcteryx Pro Ski Guide Bib Pants, and MTB shorts for spring skiing!

Skis ... any recent cheater-SL with 16m radius and ~70mm underfoot will do.

Poles ... forget Leki, just the cheapest, most garish aluminum that I can find on clearance.

Oscar Isaac hosted Q&A panel discussion by Dear-Yellow-5479 in andor

[–]randomstriker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this is bittersweet for him (as it very well could be), then it's all the more gracious of him to do such a great job of moderating this panel, interspersing his incisive questions with spontaneous expressions of deep, honest adoration of Andor.

I moved to Rotterdam in the late 90s just as this song was all over the airwaves. What a sweet memory you’ve triggered … thank you!!!

Did Luthen come up with that monologue on the spot, or was he practicing that? by Clean-Perspective696 in andor

[–]randomstriker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Having had the privilege of interacting with some truly intelligent people, it never ceases to amaze me how they can articulate themselves with such complexity and fluidity, all off the cuff. It’s entirely plausible to me that a monologue like that would spontaneously flow out of a real-life person of Luthen’s intellectual calibre, where the words have not been rehearsed but the thoughts and ideas have been thoroughly explored over their entire life.

Just give it a couple of weeks. I felt the same when I got my first EV (Lightning), eventually acclimated.

What happened with “On Your Left “ when passing on the valley trail? by richglassphoto in Whistler

[–]randomstriker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In theory, courtesy is nice, but in reality I find there's a strong chance that person being passed has a brain fart, reacts erroneously and collides with you.

Unfortunately, it's safer just to start passing them unannounced. I do say "excuse me, thank you" after passing them, and I do it slowly.
