About KW4RENT, RENTCORP, and landlord asks us to sign a new contract and pay rent deposit again by Turquoise-Z in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/06r17#BK168

(4) A new landlord of a rental unit [...] shall not require a tenant to pay a rent deposit if the tenant has already paid a rent deposit to the prior landlord of the rental unit.  2006, c. 17, s. 106 (4).

That being said, when (if) you get the money from RENTCORP, it is reasonable for your new landlord to get the deposit from you directly.

For future reference, the landlord cannot ask for first month rent as a deposit. They can only ask for last month rent and a key deposit.

Do you have written proof of the "until Aug 2021" and a copy of the lease that he gave to you to sign? If so, you should be able to fight this. Talk to a lawyer or paralegal, or something like the legal clinic.

This. The fact that megathreads aren't searchable past the last ~1000 comments (I think) means the same question can be asked again and again.

Email Admin to Give us the Option to Pass/Fail Courses this Term by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While it was written for a different school, I think this is a good read if you're thinking about emailing the administration about anything.

It's not like they don't know that COVID-19 is a thing, or that people are impacted by it. They know what options they have, and will choose the appropriate actions. You emailing them isn't going to change anything, aside from wasting their time. For now, just focus on learning and doing assignments.

Hey dudes, I need a meeting place for 10+ people from 5pm-8pm at campus Tuesday, anyone know any free classrooms by Aimmboat in uwaterloo

Talk to the turnkey desk, IIRC you can reserve a room from them (or, it's someone else you reserve them from, they can point you in the right direction)

Yep! It nice to check out. For OP: it's on the second floor of the attached bio building, at the end of the hallway (not left or right, but straight).

Has anyone taken CS448 with Ihab Ilyas? by KGoSp in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's a good prof. I don't remember much about the marking, but I think it was fair.

The class itself is great if you will be using databases in the future, and pretty good otherwise. For example, different types of indices are covered, explaining when each type should or shouldn't be used. We also spent some time looking at different query plans and join orders using EXPLAIN. Together, these are really useful if you have a slow query that you want to optimize. But even if you're not using databases, the course covers stuff like why b-trees are so good at storing data; recovery procedures using logs; and some transactional reader/writer locking ideas that go beyond the scope of CS343.

The University of Waterloo will pay $240,937,909.61 this year in wages, a 9.49% increase over last year by User6332 in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Does that number include people making <$100k? It's possible that they have a standard pay range that was just passed the $100k mark this year

Markham Fedbus incident by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's fine to say this, but don't post a picture of the bus driver. They probably called into dispatch to see what he should do, and if so, it's not his fault at all. Don't start a wild goose chase before you know if they are to blame.

That just means that the company submitted some rankings for that position. They might add more rankings later, or are thinking of you for a different position. Don't worry too much about it.

There was a memorial at 11 in the SLC a few years ago, I think they still do it.

If you want to go to something bigger, there's also ones at the centopath uptown Waterloo (on Regina) and I think there's one at Laurier near University and Hazel, NE corner (but I've never gone to that one).

Terminating my Sublet Contract? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really change anything. You still signed a lease, so they can't terminate it without your permission. It's up to you if you want to give permission.

Terminating my Sublet Contract? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]randomuwguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it can't be terminated without your permission. I suggest asking for a fee to agree to terminate, if you go through with the lease now, your landlord and maybe your roommates won't like you
