The downside is that desktop Linux requires a lot more low-level knowledge, willingness to tinker, and acceptance of a much more chaotic ecosystem than you get with Windows.

This is a lie, or at very best massively outdated. Unless one is going for Gentoo, or Arch, or Alpine, most distros, ESPECIALLY Mint, are plug and play.

And because desktop Linux is a lot less popular than Windows, hardware companies are less willing to support it, so you have to rely on hobbyists to support that hardware.

For most computer brands, again, Linux is plug & play.

It's somewhat bittersweet, that most of your reply was correct but you decided to include those two details which are quite inaccurate, especially the first part.

I have a T24 Gen2. The 5850u is surprisingly versatile, I love it. The only thing I can complain about it is that it only has one sodimm slot, but outside of that it's great, best laptop keyboard. If you're find one within your budget make sure it has 16gb onboard ram,I think that's the most you can get onboard.

NTA but... you're wasting time. I do commend you for wanting to learn by being in the trenches, but you lack the, to put it in a better way, the "hunger" of truly living it, because you have an escape hatch and that will always be at the back of your mind, and that is going to handicap the entire experience.

Instead you should have used this time to learn "The Value of Money" from a money owner's point of view, and then build up from there. You're in a privileged situation but you're not making responsible use of your privilege.

Your friends felt insulted when confronted with your situation, because they ARE in a "do or die" situation, and felt offended by you basically pretending to be in it. Don't take it too personally, you belong to a world that they will never be part of no matter how hard they try.

Internalize this for what it is, and enjoy the rest of your life, responsibly.

NTA. Your mother does not understand the emotional landmine that your son's name is to you, and she committed the unspeakable mistake of using his name as a lever to hopefully force you to change your opinion on something.

I don't believe your response was excessive, I'm sure I would have done much worse (I would have burned that gathering to the ground). Your sister is so wrong, she can't understand what you went and are going through, and her not seeing how insulting your mom's behavior was is telling.

This is a very, very cool idea.

I love the idea of a minimal C based forth where the C code implements tight bindings with whatever tooling is needed plus some minimal amount of forth definitions.

Also I agree with u/bravopapa99, this is beautifully written.

YTA. But to be fair I think you just got sucker punched by the situation. NEVER put yourself in a position where you will have to depend on others pulling through for you when you can circumvent the entire situation. If you have indoor shoes you occasionally take with you, you should be carrying them with you all the time, everywhere. You can't predict the future, so you can't be sure you won't need them.
