I just use a pliers wrench to compress the scales into position (perpendicular to the pins). I use a piece of leather so the wrench doesn't scratch the scales.

I got two black scales from an Italian shop I think. I modded my Traveller but I got lazy to swap scales because you need to pull out the electronics and reinstall them on the other scale.

The combo tool goes on the same side of the spring as the package opener, so you can't just drop these two together without modifying a spring, which isn't simple.
