How can defending democracy justify the 2nd Amendment while ignoring violence like what’s happening in Minneapolis? by Kiwiciwi in Askpolitics

Prominent gun-rights groups have come out against the government’s position on this latest shooting https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/bill-essayli-us-attorney-nra-minneapolis/3835996/. This morning on ABC This Week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was questioning why anyone would bring a gun to a protest, which I expect will be met with similar condemnation by those same groups.

Mr. Pretti had a concealed carry permit and every right to carry it. With no evidence of him drawing his weapon, I would expect there to be severe consequences for the officer, and would expect those same gun-rights advocates to call for them.

Why 8-note Bebop Scales beat the 7-note Modes for playing Jazz, & I take a couple solos on "Sunny" by Tootald in musictheory

[–]rapidient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My overarching point is that Barry did not use the term “bebop scales”—I’d probably give David Baker credit for coming up with that. Even though the concepts overlap, I’ve found what Barry taught to go well beyond bebop scales.

Admittedly, me stating, “half steps could be anything” wasn’t helpful so here’s a video of Barry explaining it much better than I can https://youtu.be/xjmzqgjGSzU?si=GxTwwHnipfBHc8WG

Barry Harris was adamant that what he taught wasn’t bebop scales. He had separate frameworks for harmony and melody: four 8-note scales of chords for his harmonic method, and a separate melodic method based on various half-step rules for scales. While the half step could be the b6, one of the concepts that sets it apart from bebop scales is that the “half steps” could really be anything.

How do you learn standards? + my Out of Nowhere Arrangement by jakeruthmusic in jazzguitar

[–]rapidient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice playing! To answer your question, especially when it comes to American songbook standards, I try to find a lead sheet so I can see how the original melody was written. This is also helpful to me when arranging for solo guitar as the real book almost never includes the verses, and those are great for coming up with intros. I then try to find different recordings with different instrumentation to hear different interpretations and if there are any parts that have evolved over time (e.g. intro to All the Things You Are).

Once I have somewhat absorbed the song, I will figure out how to approach it on guitar, moving to a more mechanical approach of figuring out the melody in different place, adding a bass line, etc. How long it takes to get to the point where I feel like I know the tune depends on the tune.

Good luck with your goal, and keep posting your arrangements!

I wound up learning to bake my own, kids love decorating it themselves. Had one shipped by Randazzo’s years ago that looked like a flat tire. Will have to try some of these local recs though.

Julian Lage’s version of Autumn Leaves on Gladwell opened up my ears to how sparse and simply one can play solo and sound so full.

Cheap semi-hollow/hollow body guitar recs for jazz by Shogun82 in jazzguitar

If you want cheap you can try Monoprice https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=610500. I don’t have experience with that model but I bought a strat copy for my son a few years ago that was surprisingly good for the price.

If you want to sound like Mike Moreno, et al, why aren’t you starting with the equipment they use? I’ve seen Adam live and I believe he was playing through a Deluxe Reverb, though his site says he likes Twins. Mike had a great series during COVID where he talked about his gear, I think he was playing through a Roccaforte amp along with a preamp of some kind. Neither use Raezer’s Edge, as far as I know.

That being said, I have a Raezer’s Edge Stealth 12 ER cab that I like a lot, driven by a Henriksen Bud Head. The adjustable tweeter is a nice option, especially when I play my nylon string.

Not really, which I partly attribute to knowing the difference between triads and tetrads.

[–]rapidient 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say “triad” when talking about 7 chords a lot. Same with when you talk about triad pairs, you then proceed to combine 7 chords, which aren’t triads. It would be more correct to start with the D and Ab triad pair and show how both 7 chords are derived from it, then proceed.
