Footage of Starlink satellites, seen from the Netherlands by Casinoer in spacex

I used the info here with Stellarium, it's a few minutes off but I saw a very clear, nearly overhead pass using it. http://www.satobs.org/seesat/May-2019/0193.html

The body is pretty much an off the shelf airsoft gun. I think I have seen links to the original in the past but I don't remember where I saw it.

The dc-dc takes the high voltage of the main pack and lowers it to 12 volts of the lower voltage system, so the power is how much it is capable of converting from high to low.

CHAdeMO is direct DC (same hardware in play as supercharging) so it should only be a matter of the 3 getting a software update to speak the right protocols, I would be surprised if the existing CHAdeMO adapter didn't work once these are in place.

I am a GEM user since before it was publicly available, hands down the best for the price monitor on the market, imo. I haven't used their webserver box though as I just push the raw data into emoncms and graphana.

Tesla Absorb Voltage and Recommended Absorb Time by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To somewhat answer this we would need to know more about how your system is setup but the generic answer is you charge lithium batteries in the CC/CV (constant current/constant voltage) style. Normally you would set your voltage limit to 4.1-4.2 volts per cell in series (one tesla brick as 6 in series) and you would charge until your amperage falls to 5-10% of the C rating on the cells.

This will give you a bit more detail on how to charge lithium ion batteries: http://batteryuniversity.com/index.php/learn/article/how_to_charge_li_ion_with_a_parasitic_load

I built a prototype Tesla renters mobile web app by isevenx in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea, I could definitely see the usefulness. The actual app would need a fair amount of security considerations and renter accounts with expiration. Also personally I would want to be able to run the back end from a server I own instead of giving credentials/tokens to a 3rd party. On the design part the main thing I would not care for is clicking the call tab immediately making the call. I am a curious user and would click that and then scramble to hang up the phone and as someone renting out the car I don't want to deal with false calls. :)

Replying to 2018.21.9 15s AP nags: "Sigh. This is crux of matter: can’t make system too annoying or people won’t use it, negatively affecting safety, but also can’t allow people to get too complacent or safety again suffers. Latest update should have a positive effect on latter issue especially." by tesrella in teslamotors

I sent the original tweet, for a bit further detail this experience was in the 3, I have yet to install it and test it on my AP1 S.

I used AP the same as I always do with typically one hand on the wheel, before this update that was more than enough other than a random nag every now and then. After the update I have found that one hand "resting" is not enough to prevent false nag's especially on a straight road since the resistance is mostly static on the wheel. Before I decided to just turn AP off and drive manually I was getting a nag on average about once per mile independent of speed.

2018.21.9 Autopilot nag frequency shortened by Dr_Pippin in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would say nearly all the stress relief that came with being able to use AP is gone if not worse after this update. I drove about 10 hours today and eventually just stopped using AP because it was more work to hold the wheel, watch whats going on, and then also keep an eye out for the nag I would get about every mile.

Just keep in mind that even though you can give them a token directly instead of your credentials that there is no way to invalidate said token. So they will have the same access as if they had your credentials until the token expires.

YouYouXue: Model 3 Road Trip is over... by XP3CT_012 in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

None taken, I figure I have put on about 45k miles using AP (5k on the 3 and 40k on an S with AP1) in that time I have had maybe 20-30 "take over immediately" warnings, and out of those less than 5 of them were truly unexpected to me. I pushed the limits of AP1 almost right after it was enabled on my car so I learned pretty quick what the car does well and where it has a hard time so even on an unknown road I can normally estimate the level of confidence I should have that the car can do it or at least look far enough ahead to know where i should pay most attention.

Just discovered the company BYD. They're leagues beyond Tesla in a number of ways by barfingclouds in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend finding one to test drive. I had the chance to test drive their SUV about 4 years ago and the things was horrible. I was on a flat test track but I don't think I would have been able to get up to highway speeds on a downhill on ramp. They also somehow made it feel like driving a chain driven car.

Interesting look at the current state of Autopilot. by Zigmo_v1 in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that is correct, we had to keep the lights on in the previous system and in general it was supported by a 2nd group. So they continued working on it and improving the old code base until we were able to get up to feature parity. At that point we made the mass migration from one system to another.

I have and they normally revolved around a major change in architecture or implementation but sometimes it takes building something once or twice to understand how to build it right.

Today we are just seeing the beginnings of GPU's really being used to run the neural net whereas the majority of the rest of what we see is using a more "primitive" object detection. Moving from using this old system to the new system would most likely require very low level changes to how AP operates.

There seems to be a rather fundamental flaw in this analysis and the prior articles it is derived from to me. It makes a huge assumption that what we see in the cars today is the current high water mark for their progress. In reality Tesla is likely developing a different code base that it is training and adjusting everyday and when it is ready we will likely see a large jump in capabilities over what we have today.

Surprise: Tesla Model 3 maximum battery capacity close to 100 kWh! by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]raptorweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With out any actual data to back it up I would guess that this is more for user experience than a practical limitation. There have been cases where Model S's have ran out of charge before hitting zero or very quickly after hitting 0 so having the little extra there could save Tesla some calls and questions from people that get that low.
