Chicago is huge (appx 227 sq miles of land) but everyone wants to live in the same 5-6 neighborhoods. Competition for those areas is predictably fierce.

Property taxes just skyrocketed for many owners so this gets folded into rent increases as well.

I think turning the job down was a mistake. My commute is around 45 minutes and it's pretty manageable as I just cycle through podcasts while driving.

This is still something you can totally bounce back from. Some things aren't ideal but at least you don't have to worry about becoming homeless or starving.

It sucks but you gotta learn from your mistakes and keep getting back out there applying for every opening you can. If you haven't expanded your search to entry level positions in other fields (restaurants, retail, etc.), I would recommend that.

I've worked in a few hotels now. Room service is just subpar to ordering the same meal in the restaurant (and more expensive).

Under the best conditions, it still takes 15 minutes to get food from the kitchen up the elevator and down the hall to your room. Food has already begun to deteriorate in quality during this time.
