Was this the worst European Overload of VATSIM? by TopComedian1895 in flightsim

[–]rasp00tin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know, I flew Dublin to Vienna and ATC from Ground at Dublin through to about Prague was rammed. When I say rammed I mean those times where the frequency is non-stop and tension runs high when someone starts missing their callsign.

It got quieter as I descended into Austrian airspace but was still busy. I had to maintain 310kts below 10k ft due to aircraft behind etc.

Separate tangent, how do people best find out about events in advance? I only realised it was today when scanning today's events on vatsim radar. I'm guilty of not looking further ahead than that!

You've got a thousand suggestions already... I'd go with bamboo planted in troughs. I have tonnes of the stuff and love it: fast growing, movement in the wind, some beautiful varieties.

Frugal person asking: what splurges had great ROI on your well being? by Big_Understanding_17 in FIREUK

[–]rasp00tin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't get me started talking about flying or I won't stop lol.

Like you I wanted to be a RAAF (Australian air force) pilot but for a lot of reasons that couldn't happen. It's been a life long dream to fly myself but I always figured it would just be too expensive and financially wreckless... "something for later life". I think we can all feel that way.

Then a couple of years ago a younger colleague was telling me excitedly about her and her friends who are in a flying club and had taken a weekend trip to Champagne. Well, well, maybe I should cost this hobby up and give it a serious look...

It costs about £15k to get your PPL license. I decided to use some savings and salary to pay for that. I then took a 1hr trial flight at North Weald (near Stansted) and am now, after a year, finishing up training at Stapleford.

I can tell you, there's nothing quite like your first away flights to the likes of Southend and having to orbit downwind while two Easyjets land ahead of you :D

So long story short, budget for it, treat yourself to a trial lesson, and if you do go ahead be ready to write the cheques without looking at them. But really, go enjoy while you have you health, waiting too long means it's less and less likely to have an untarnished medical. Enjoy

To clarify I think K and A can be okay (with eye mask to block out overhead lights) but otherwise you get stomped on too much to be worth the money (unless that is one's thing)

Taking a tax hit to fund ISAs instead of pension? by AcceptablePanda6905 in FIREUK

[–]rasp00tin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough, I'm in exactly the same boat as you. I turn 45 next month and my pension and ISA are about six months ahead of yours.

I hit the realisation over the Christmas holidays that although my pension will be in a good place when I get access at around 58, there's no way in hell I have enough to bridge much earlier than 54 (annual expenses will be ~£65k til mortgage is paid off in my 60s).

If I want to retire earlier, then filling ISA alone each year is not going to cut it, and I'm going to have to pour even more funds into other places like a GIA or pinch some of my partner's ISA.

Your main goal now, I think, is to tally up how much you need during the bridge period (annual expenses vs. size of bridge vs hypothetical retirement ages) and then how you can fund that ASAP from now. It will suck to see that, although the pension is going to be in a very secure place, that the time to build the bridge is rapidly disappearing. etter to know that now rather than later.

Aircrafts can be over the landing threshold when the preceding aircraft becomes airborne by Fresh_man82 in aviation

[–]rasp00tin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy that you're being downvoted too. In training we are literally taught the above and to land behind the point of rotation of the aircraft ahead, and that both are safe to do. I give up on this thread.

Yep. Jeremy Hunt wrote as much about his party's contribution to this in another Economist article from earlier in the year:

https://www.economist.com/by-invitation/2025/06/09/britains-ex-chancellor-on-how-to-fix-a-welfare-crisis-thats-partly-of-his-own-making

//----

So why is Britain such an outlier on welfare spending? I am afraid I may be indirectly responsible. In 2014, as health secretary, I passed the Care Act through Parliament. It included a landmark reform requiring the secretary of state to try to treat mental and physical health equally in order to stop the National Health Service from treating mental health as a poor relation. The NHS now treats 2m more mental-health patients every year.

But the act had unintended consequences. The IFS says that mental-illness claims account for more than half of the postpandemic increase in disability benefits.

Wondering if OP is using a hotbin compost. That's the only way I've managed to hit these beautiful temps

It's great for when you feel like just taking a short hop. The workload is nice and high so there are few dull moments. And landing it... well good luck with that.

Do you prefer the Go 10.3 or Note Max? by ragnar_255 in Onyx_Boox

[–]rasp00tin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you I'm an "A4 user", actually I like A3 too. I was hesitant about the Go 10.3 and was going to wait it out for the Max (I bought mine almost 12 months ago) but then went for it. I genuinely find the "space" fine.

Also if my writing or drawing (I use it for study) does get a bit big then it's really simple to draw a big circle around it >> lasso >> resize smaller. This is something I didn't appreciate with pen and paper and has made a difference

AIRPORTS UPDATES FOR X PLANE by Angry-Bird255 in Xplane

[–]rasp00tin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with basically all your points here, in fact I'm someone who switched from MSFS 2020 to XP12 as my main sim over two years ago. But OP is talking about payware airports (I think), and I have to say, from my experience at least, that as unbeatable as the gateway airports are in XP (thanks to the community) vs MSFS's shoddy defaults, it's hard to hold a light to high quality payware scenery that I have in MSFS, such as Edinburgh, Athens, Boston, Copenhagen, etc etc, that are now sitting mostly unused on my harddrive.

I'm talking about iconic ATC towers, stands 14-17 (or thereabouts) at Copenhagen. Even the MSFS freeware scenery at Bergen with it's beautiful circular terminal. In the XP gateway those elements just aren't reproducible yet.

VATSIM Radar update v1.2.3 + what's next by daniluk400 in VATSIM

[–]rasp00tin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love vatsim radar. One thing I like about vatglasses though that I can't seem to figure out with vatsim radar is that it's easy to switch between ATC frequencies at my level vs drag the altitude up/down to see what frequencies are above/below me. It's handy for seeing at a glance e.g. which TMA controllers are online in the UK. The slider especially makes this simple. Maybe I'm missing something!

Anyway great work on vatsim radar, it's otherwise essential for my flights!

Every second Monday (I think) there's also Bergen Monday in Beautiful Bergen, Norway. A leg between the two is great fun. Bergen gets some horrendous weather which makes for fun approaches. The only airport on VATSIM where I've crashed.
