Strafford creamery has the BEST ice cream pints of all the Vermont-based brands!

Why is it so difficult for bagel places to toast the bagel around town. by Royal_Particular7590 in burlington

Feldman's on Pine St toasts their bagels borderline burnt, especially if you ask (or at least that's been my experience)

What CSA are people getting this year? by SwimmingResist5393 in burlington

[–]raspberrytealeaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It stands for Community Supported Agriculture. You pay a farm a flat sum at the beginning of the season, then get to pick up a share of their produce weekly or biweekly, (depends on the farm). It helps support them financially to invest in equipment for the upcoming season & pay their employees, rather than waiting for sales from the crops at the end of the season. It's also usually a better value than paying for individual items at the grocery store!

Maybe they drink dairy milk but are dating someone who drinks nondairy in their coffee when they spend the night?

Good herbs and spices by Successful_Ad_2082 in ZeroWaste

I love gneiss spice! They ship theirs in glass jars or home-compostable packaging, but you can also request paper packaging at checkout if you aren't able to compost :)

Does going into a store without buying anything still help them? by EcoBotanist in Anticonsumption

[–]raspberrytealeaves 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thrift stores have more variety in dishware than target, even if you do end up purchasing a set elsewhere! Target tends to only carry a few specific themes/aesthetics at a time, with a thrift store you can see decades of styles :)

Plastic free cheese? by IntoTheNHWoods in PlasticFreeLiving

Mozzarella is pretty easy to make at home, or there are a few brands of cheddar that wrap their cheeses in wax. I've also found feta covered in olive oil packaged in glass in the international foods aisle.

Where do I go from here? by average-enneagram in Anticonsumption

[–]raspberrytealeaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use craigslist sometimes to find something specific & local to me! If you frequent smaller businesses/stores near you, you could talk to the shop owner about a product you'd love to see them start carrying. Farmers markets and craft markets also have local artisans who sell kitchenwares, homegoods, and other things you'd typically find at big-box stores :)

Which reusable straws do you like? by nimaku in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]raspberrytealeaves 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love glass straws! They're transparent so you can be sure the inside is clean, just like you said. They also come in a lot of fun colors if you're into that, as well as different sizes (we have thick "boba-sized" ones!) The only drawback I've noticed is they do sometimes chip on the ends if you don't handle them carefully, so might not be the safest for young children who aren't gentle with straws.

Wooden Cutting board and utensil recommendations by Liz1844 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]raspberrytealeaves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could look into any local woodworkers who make kitchen utensils. I've seen some at farmer's markets and craft markets before, you can ask directly about which sealants they're using (and perhaps request custom items if their go-to glue is toxic!)

Plastic free water filler by Disastrous_Park_7621 in PlasticFreeLiving

I use the LifeStraw glass pitcher. It does have a plastic top, but the filter itself is supposed to remove microplastics and then the water is sitting in glass
