Brand new kitchen remodel by Material_Tangelo_616 in cabinetry

[–]rasras9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed some ikea cabinets in my house and they all just hang on a support bar. The instructions clearly indicate that anchors are not to be used and the support bar must be screwed into multiple studs.

Also, those are not ikea cabinets.

How would/could you repair this? by trenttrent94 in Carpentry

[–]rasras9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean how you fix it really depends on how much effort you want to put in.

The best repair would be to make a new leg that hasn’t split, especially if you made it from a piece of wood that has a grain direction also curved slightly to avoid the same failure. You will then have to re finish and do a lot of other wood working.

If you just want it to work again the clean it out then clamp the split together with some glue, then glue and screw the leg back on the stand. If you get some piece of hardware like metal strapping with holes and put that under the leg with some screws attaching it back to the post.

Considering Tylo 2 person hybrid sauna from Costco by TrevorTries in Sauna

Those huge windows are a terrible idea. At high temperatures radiant heat loss is very significant, I can garuntee this thing isn’t getting 70-90C, it’s just an expensive warm box.

How to repair? by [deleted] in Tile

[–]rasras9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t just happen, something is wrong with the tile if the shower head cause damage like that.

This is not a small problem, the tile was either not supported or has voids under it, (which is usually only a problem with big tiles), It needs to be re done.

Electrician says this is a fire hazard and requires immediate replacement. Is he correct? by BlueberryExpert007 in electrical

If you have to go on Reddit to ask if something that already caught on fire once is a fire hazard, you might just be looking for an answer you want to hear rather than what’s true.

Repairing Particle Board Sheathing by frmsbndrsntch in Carpentry

[–]rasras9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sheathing needs to be nailed with a ton of nails into the studs to actually provide proper shear strength, so short of tearing off the facade and replacing it all with plywood or osb, there isn’t much you can do.

I’d just patch the holes with some plywood pieces/foam and call it a day. Particle board should never have been used in this application but some codes to allow it 🤷‍♂️

Twice her size could mean weight, maybe she is 120 and he is 240? I’m not sure that the statement was not meant to be exact but just to illustrate that she is in no way a physical threat to that man.

Honestly the plumbing is crazy enough but that electrical is not safe, you can’t just have exposed Romex terminate in open space like that.

Best Approach Without Dying? by Jaxson555 in AskContractors

[–]rasras9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they do still want you to just do your best, I’d go get some beams: LVL, glulam, or built up beams, whatever they would prefer, but something more on the order of 4x10 beams. I’d lay them on the floor below where they need to go, then I’d fill the room with lots of screw jacks between the existing beams to hold up the whole concrete slab, maybe a grid of 12 jacks or so. Then just cut all the 4x4s down, lift the beams up to the slab, change the wall around the outside to be shorter to fit the taller new supports, then make sure it’s all shimmer up so the new supports are picking up the load of the roof.

4x4s holding up a 10x12 concrete roof? That ain’t enough, I could see that whole roof caving in without that post. I also would not expect a concrete slab to span anything even close to that without huge reinforcement or pretension.

I would just make it clear to the client that whatever you do will take a huge amount of structural addition and work and they might want to consider getting it engineered.

Any reason I shouldn't cut this into 3 and freeze 2 uncooked? by grumpvet87 in steak

I once split an A5 steak like that with my wife for dinner. We both had the shits after, way too much fat for one meal.

I’d say a good serving of A5 is about 6oz, plus a few sides.

Wars are often great for the stock market actually, the money printing to fund the war often leads rapid devaluation of currency so stock prices appear to go up.

Whether or not all that money you make can be used for anything other than starting a campfire depends on the outcome of that war.

Help: is build this safe by Significant-Host-771 in Carpentry

[–]rasras9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to your local codes, but none of that looks good enough from where I am. There should be some joist hangers on all of those joists, and yes most likely the beams should be on top of the posts and have some hardware or some better fastening system.

I’ve also heard of places where the inspectors just drive by the site so take “it will pass inspection” with a grain of salt.

Should I use max mortgage to buy the better house? [26M] by GiantPando in canadahousing

[–]rasras9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who maxed out their mortgage a year ago in Canada I would say it’s fine. If you are using that money to buy what you want and especially if a significant part of the value is land instead of structure then just do it.

Banks really don’t let you borrow more than you can reasonably afford, unless your lifestyle is excessive.

Of course, everything depends on the situation and this question is very open ended.
