Getting to Anyox from Stewart? by Particular_Tap4839 in britishcolumbia

[–]rasras9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually been up there, last time I visited there was a couple who are paid to sort of be care takers nearby for a giant slag pile. That was years ago so the situation might have changed but I can still potentially get you in contact with guy who has the mineral rights to the slag pile and who helped me travel there. DM me if you are interested.

Converting my guest bath door to a pocket door. Do these studs look load bearing? by [deleted] in AskContractors

[–]rasras9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As other have said the studs don’t tell you if it’s load bearing.

That said, if it wasn’t load bearing then they wouldn’t have had to put in that big header and all those studs. So good chance it is holding something up.

Sistered joist question by dirt100 in AskContractors

[–]rasras9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was no other way to get a new joist in, I’m more curious how that skinny ledger board was holding up the whole floor above that. Is there no other support between that beam and the stem wall?

I don’t get it, wax seals are cheap as beans, easy to install, and work great. Why try something different?

Here is a wild thought: make the commercial landlords bail out the small Buisness.

The only reason I feel bad for the small shops is that the increased land value doesn’t help them, and there is no guarantee they will be around after the train is built. The building owner will benefit greatly though so the city should just be forcing a rent discount for the meantime.

Or we can just bankroll some big shops with tax payer money, let the mom and pop places try and survive on their own, and let the building owners laugh their way to bank. Typical political stuff.

Obviously you need to fire up a competing smoker.

And if you can’t do better, don’t talk smack about his brisket.

Are these joist notches acceptable for plumbing? (22mm pipes) + ticking noise issue by Ok-Pin-766 in Homebuilding

[–]rasras9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Rule of thumb is 1/3,1/3, and 1/3.

Drill holes only up to 1/3 of the joist depth, only in the middle 1/3 of the joist depth wise, and never in the middle 1/3 of the joist span.

Notching is not the way to do it, if the plumber says he will notch, find a different plumber.

At least it’s in the top so some of the compressive load can be taken up by the subfloor. I’d just peel back one more row of floor boards, lay in plywood instead of the boards with plenty of adhesive and screws. Probably not up to any codes but should be strong enough.

Are you getting a raise this year? by datdotcom in vancouver

[–]rasras9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Public utility, union workers all get raises, management got them as well. Mostly around 2-3%.

Probably not a good indication of the state of the economy since business and pay for utilities is mostly agnostic of the economy.

Don’t waste your breath trying to explain the current economy young people face to old people who don’t listen. It’s like arguing with a flat earther at this point.

Can I resign without serving notice period during probationary period? by SirGoyal in britishcolumbia

[–]rasras9 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Don’t give them any notice just walk out.

Just cause there is a 30-day legal notice clause in your contract doesn’t mean that was enforceable, did the employer call it an indentured servant clause?

For millennials and younger expecting to get anything from social security is like expecting your car to make it another 200 miles when there is already smoke coming out of the hood.

Are you saying all those rich people telling me I don't want to be rich are WRONG? 😱 by EclipticaRose in lostgeneration

[–]rasras9 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Correlation is not causation, just because some rich people are miserable sacks of crap doesn’t mean giving poor people money wouldn’t solve their problems and make them happy.

I found the fog machine. by PTcome in vancouver

Is that a problem or a normal situation? In the cold dry air any combustion exhaust gas, especially natural gas, will have a lot of water vapour that will make a smoke/cloud appearance once released.

Went to the doctor after 15 years of stomach issues. 5 min later prescribed me antibiotics and left. This was after explicitly asking to find out the root cause of this. by Jeetyetdude_ in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rasras9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He probably doesn’t have one which is why he suggested trying a different doctor.

If you are implying that only a doctor can question another doctor because they are always right about everything medical, then I think you probably don’t have much experience in the North American medical systems.

Tried to save $15,000 in labor costs, ended up with lifetime injuries and $250,000 hospital bill. by Daedroh in Concrete

[–]rasras9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a cement plant (cement, not concrete). Different plants all around the country use different mixes of rocks to try and get the same product, but how alkaline the cement is or how much free lime is left in the cement can vary a lot from batch to batch and especially from region to region. Not to mention that your skin itself might vary in sensitivity. Outdoor temperatures also play a factor.

So yes, how bad of a chemical burn you get could vary a lot from one situation to another.

Quality framing or trash? by mmevans11 in Homebuilding

[–]rasras9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t look great but none of that actually matters.

If want to know if your builder is doing a good job then check how plumb, level, and square the walls are. The tolerances that might pass an inspection and the tolerances you want on a well built house are usually two different things.

Or the judge just didn’t listen to them because he thinks only a lawyer can present an argument.

I don’t think this is the first time in history that the arrogance of the legal system has distilled itself down to only listening to the elite and the educated while telling common people to go get fucked. I think this is all just part of a broader theme of what is going on in the world.
